The people in the caravan do not realize she has stowed away until they are far away from where she lives, and decide that the best thing to do is to take her with them. She is treated well and befriended by Joe, a boy a little older than her, and has many age-appropriate adventures. When the caravan returns to her town, she recognizes her home and a portrait of herself and returns to her family for several books focusing on girls going to boarding school.
