This may be inspired by an actual weapon, the Chakram (literally: ''wheel''). The difference is that most chakram were used as throwing weapons rather than in melee, though sometimes the Rings Of Death can be thrown as well (and often serve as [[PrecisionGuidedBoomerang impromptu boomerangs]]). The Chinese ''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_and_fire_wheels feng huo lun]]'' ("wind and fire wheels") may be another inspiration.
