* During the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, journalist Amir Tinon and his family were hiding at their home Kibbutz as it was attacked. Amir called his father, 62 year old retired IDF General Noam Tibon, who had specialized in counter terrorism operations. Tibon told his son “Trust me. I will come. This is my profession. Nobody can stop me.” He then proceeded to jump in his car in Tel Aviv with a handgun and drive down. On the way, he rescued survivors of a music festival, saved wounded Israeli soldiers, fought off terrorists with IDF forces and linked up with another retired general and some Israeli soldiers to fight his way into his son’s kibbutz and rescue his family and their neighbors.

* A dark example from ''ComicBook/AstroCity'': FlyingBrick Supersonic is brought out of retirement by a nostalgic old friend, but proves to be a shadow of his former self. Thanks to a combination of senility and lack of practice leaving him unable to use the clever and silver-age-y tricks he preferred during his career, Supersonic is reduced to wailing on his enemy until it stays down, causing massive collateral damage in the process.
** A lighter example appears in "The Dark Age". After the target of their RoaringRampageOfRevenge is no more, the Williams' brothers realize how self-destructive their quest was, and left their life of crime-fighting to run a chartered fishing business instead.
** An extremely light example comes in Starfighter, who finds the Lorus, the SentientCosmicForce that gives him his powers, has decided he should enjoy his retirement. It's even found five possible candidates to be the next Starfighter (and one of them is the original's daughter). Starfighter's story is about accepting that, yes, it's time to just take it easy for a while.

* ComicBook/JessicaJones's backstory involves her being a former superhero who went to high school with Peter Parker. However, a few years into her hero career she was kidnapped and enslaved by [[Characters/Characters/DaredevilCentralRoguesGallery Purple Man]] for eight months. The experience so traumatized Jessica that she quit superheroics, though continues to fight crime as a private eye.

* ''TabletopGame/Warhammer40000'': In order for a T'au of the Fire Caste to be able to retire, they must be able to prove that their guidance as a teacher or advisor is of more benefit to the Greater Good than using their skills in the field. To be even considered for this, the T'au in question must have achieved the rank of [[FourStarBadass Shas'O]] - the highest possible field rank, which requires three Trials by Fire and at least twelve years of active service (out of a Tau's 30-40 year lifespan). In other words, only the biggest badasses are allowed to retire in the first place, and none of them are afraid to get back into the battlesuit if the Greater Good needs them to.
