For many shows it is a natural part of the ongoing narrative. For some it's a twist. For still more it's a season CliffHanger or standard ploy for the [[GrandFinale series finale]] to be employed at the [[LastMinuteHookup very end]]. For others it triggers [[ShippingBedDeath a specific type of Jumping The Shark]], especially if it breaks the RelationshipCeiling.

Most commonly broadcasted with a FirstKiss, but every once in a while you find a more...drastic variant (GladToBeAliveSex comes to mind). Compare RelationshipReveal -- a moment where an implied but existing couple becomes canon. A move from casual to serious can involve IGotYouADrawer. Also compare TheyDo- the point past which the RomanceArc is concluded and the relationship becomes a constant that feeds ''other'' plot threads. Though they often coincide (e.g. in a LastMinuteHookup) the two are far from synonymous; a RelationshipUpgrade can be the beginning of hardships, trials and tribulations that the relationship may not survive at all.

* At the end of ''Manga/VirginLove'' Kaoru and Daigo upgrade from FuckBuddies to lovers after Kaoru overcomes his commitment issues.

* Predictably, Danny and Sam in ''DannyPhantom'' got together by the GrandFinale.

* In ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'', Cloud and Tifa's [[PreClimaxClimax night under the Highwind]].

* In the final episode of the first series of ''Series/{{Torchwood}}'', Captain Jack Harkness and Ianto finally (and very dramatically) kiss in front of the team -- not quite a LastMinuteHookup but almost, but it's their first on-screen kiss.

* It certainly appears that Ash & Emily from "Webcomic/{{Misfile}}" have finally gotten theirs with [[http://www.misfile.com/?date=2013-01-16 this page]]

* In ''[[Literature/SmokeAndShadows Smoke and Ashes]]'', Tony and Lee finally hook up after three books of EveryoneCanSeeIt. In the later short story ''See Me'', set couple of years later, they are now living together.

* FanFic/AGrowingAffection gives Hinata and Naruto four; in chapter one they become training partners to get to know each other better. In chapter 38 they become an official couple. [[spoiler: In chapter 90, they get engaged; and the final chapter deals with their wedding.]]

* ''RebuildOfEvangelion'' play straight this trope with [[spoiler:Shinji and Rei II]] in the second film finale. [[spoiler:But at the beginning of the third film, it is revealed that these actions have resulted only in a [[ApocalypseHow third impact]] and that [[DidNotGetTheGirl Rei II became stuck in Unit-01's core]]. Hard to now predict what happens next, but it is likely that both will play a key role in the series finale.]]
