* "Mossflower" from the Redwall series, Martin the Warrior's sword, which belonged to his father, is broken in his travels. It is then reforged by the great lord of Salamandastron, using a "fallen star" (a meteorite, rather) to rebuild it into a purely unbreakable sword, which also begins its legendary status. In one book of the series. Martin wears the broken hilt around his neck through most of the book, until he finally gets it reforged and proceeds to kick much ass.

* A similar example from KnightsOfTheOldRepublic is the Wookiee ceremonial weapon Bacca's Blade. The hilt is with Chuundar, who may be in charge, but is anything but honorable. The blade was broken off in a sacred hunt, and (if the player chooses), can be recovered and given to Chuundar's (and Zaalbar's) exiled father. If you choose this route, the blade will be re-forged, and is one of the better non-lightsaber blade weapons.

Nope. In Dragon Quest III, you\'re not reforging the King\'s Sword, you\'re simply finding the mystical metal, selling it to a blacksmith, and having him make a whole new sword. The King\'s Sword doesn\'t even have a predecessor blade of legend.

* In DragonQuestIII, the King's Sword is the only weapon that can defeat the Archfiend but it was smashed to bits. It was made of Orichalum. One can find the pieces, sell it to the UltimateBlacksmith, and he'll sell you back the sword, good as new.

Instead of reforging it himself, the old man teaches Lowe how to do it because he knows he's going to die soon and wants his craft to live on in a worthy successor. In a subversion, the repaired Gerbera is just that -- repaired -- and not made anything really amazing. On the other hand, Lowe uses his knowledge along with a giant hunk of ThunderboltIron to forge BFS a 150-meter-long Gerbera Straight which can only be wielded by his Gundam's MetaMecha.

* In TheBrokenSword, by Poul Anderson, the eponymous sword is a major plot point: it's a doomed sword of evil doom. Skafloc (the protagonist) travels to the edge of the earth to get it re-forged by epic giants. * Inuyasha has the Tessaiga break; when repaired it's harder to use at first. This actually follows a somewhat more AppliedPhlebotinum version of realistically needing to add more material, as while the first sword was made from Inuyasha's father's fang only, TheBlacksmith needed Inuyasha's own fang to reforge the sword. Because of this, Inuyasha had to rely on his own power to wield the sword, while beforehand he was relying on his father's power, effectively riding daddy's strike:coattails tail.

* ASongOfIceAndFire has a rare villainous example (of course). After executing Eddard Stark, the Lannisters were left with Ice, the Stark's AncestralWeapon. For a long time after, it was wielded by Ser Payne, the King's Justice. After the Red Wedding, Lord Tywin decided that Ice was too damn nice a sword to leave in the hands of a glorified executioner. So he gave Payne a new sword to make up for taking it and had Ice broken down and reforged. Being a greatsword, Ice yielded enough material to have two full-length longswords made. One was given to his grandson, King Joffrey, while the other went to Tywin's son Jaime.

As it sounds. A blade, once broken, reforged! It's probably the Sword of Plot Advancement or InfinityPlusOneSword, but it could also just be the hero's signature weapon, if it got broken somehow. In reality, going through something like this would weaken the integrity of a blade, if it is possible at all (realistically "reforging" a blade would be melting down and recycling the metal and adding some new metal, effectively making it a new sword, which might be handy for Unobtainium). In fiction, they might actually come out of the reforging STRONGER than they went in.
