The trope comes from a long-standing tradition among fashionistas that red hair contrasts best against green or light blue attire, which is one reason redheads are encouraged to wear green to make a striking visual appearance. The color they encourage redheads never to wear is pink because the colors clash too much.

Basically, this is when the main outfit of a redhead or auburn-haired character is green, like a leprechaun. They don't have to actually be leprechauns, and not all leprechauns are dressed in this colour scheme. This trope can sometimes be used to hint that somebody is of Irish descent, but sometimes illustrators use it as a traditional pair of complementary colors or because they just feel like it. Bonus points if the character in question has nature-themed abilities.

See Green Eyed Redhead for a similar theme.

Everybody loves redheaded characters, in particular the feisty ones, whether they be heroic, evil or just love interests. And in fiction, there's a high chance that you might find a redhead wearing something green. Why? Because red is green's complementary color; therefore, they go well together. Bonus points if the character in question has earth-themed abilities.

See Green Eyed Redhead for a similar theme; in fact, there's probably a substantial overlap in the character list.
