** Miles then gets appointed as an [[IntimidatingRevenueService Imperial Auditor]], a position that lets him sometimes act in place of the Emperor and order around anyone in the Bayarran military. Many people think that Miles got that job only because of his family connections. They then discover their mistake.

* ''Literature/{{Footfall}}'', a Creator/LarryNiven-Jerry Pournelle novel, features a female Army officer who goes from being a Captain (a rank attainable at a relatively young age; the character is introduced when she is only 28 years old) to being a Lieutenant Colonel within the space of three years time. The subversion comes from the fact that she's directly promoted, twice, by the President of the United States, who as Commander in Chief of all American military forces has the right to promote whoever he wants any time he wants for any reason he cares to use.

Her second promotion may also be justified by the [[YouAreInCommandNow shortage of military commanders after the initial alien invasion]].

* Late in ''Literature/EndersGame'', the title Ender is promoted from the ostensible rank of Cadet straight to Admiral at the age of twelve. The {{justifi|edTrope}}cation for this is the whole point of the book: by this point he [[spoiler:has already been the ''de facto'' commander of Earth's entire space fleet for some time; once the war is over, the promotion is largely political, and he very rarely pulls rank]].

* ''Fanfic/ToServeInHell:'' Rainbow Dash is sergeant, functionally the commander-in-chief of Nightmare Moon's guard alongside Wind Rider. This is in spite of her being both comparatively young, in her late 20s at oldest, and a depressed layabout. The former at least is justified since she was one of the first to swear loyalty to Nightmare Moon upon her return, meaning that her rank is a case of seniority (ironic since her fellow sergeant is much older than her, but joined long after she did).

* PlayedForLaughs in the ''VideoGame/{{Borderlands}}'' DLC ''The Secret Armory of General Knoxx''. Knoxx complains about receiving orders from an admiral who has no excuse being in the position, receiving the rank from the moment he enlisted due to rampant {{nepotism}} at the [[MegaCorp Atlas Corporation]]. The part that turns this from a simple example of corruption into a downright comical display of incompetence is the fact that the rookie officer is ''five''. As in, this is a child named Mikey who can just barely string together a sentence written in crayon.
