->"I always wanted a brother. [...] Instead, I got stuck with two sisters."
-->-- Arthur, WesternAnimation/Arthur, "The Perfect Brother"

The outnumbered sibling occurs when a character (usually the protagonist or at least a major character, as they're more likely to have a defined family) is the only son or daughter in a family with three or more children. This can result in the character hoping and praying for a sibling of their gender, ParentalFavoritism either for or against the character, and the character feeling either superior or inferior to the rest. There are few different places to put the only son/daughter:
* Oftentimes, they're either the oldest or the youngest kid in their family.
* If they're the middle child, it's one of the more common aversions to MiddleChildSyndrome since they stand out by virtue of their gender.

Often (but not always) occurs with MassiveNumberedSiblings, since a family of three doesn't make this trope particularly interesting. See also TheSmurfettePrinciple, TheOneGuy and IHaveBrothers. Often appears in a character's BackStory even if it isn't depicted in the plot.

Highly expect ABoyAGirlAndABabyFamily, AnnoyingYoungerSibling, BigBrotherBully and/or CainAndAbelAndSeth to come into play and for creators to throw in a MissingMom (for a girl) or a DisappearedDad (for a boy) for added effect. Extreme cases may include a PromotionToParent as well. Compare SingleSexOffspring where a family exclusively (or nearly so) produces only boys or girls sometimes over multiple generations.

* Manga/Bleach: Soifon was the youngest of six siblings, and the only girl. She was also the only successful sibling. All five of her brothers died quickly without amounting to much and she only remembers them with a feeling of shame at their failure. Her talent was recognised quickly; within seven years she was commanding the court guards and earned her great-grandmother's code-name "Soifon", before eventually becoming both a Samurai Gotei 13 captain and Supreme Commander of the Ninja Secret Remote Squad.
* In Manga/BloomIntoYou, Seiji Maki has three sisters- two older and one younger- and is the only boy in the family.
* Manga/CardCaptorSakura: Syaoran has four older sisters named Xiefa, Fuurie, Huenli and Feimei, who may or may not be quadruplets. While they're only briefly mentioned in the manga and anime, they do appear the first movie, where they're Genki Girls and hilariously obsessed with cute things. Syaoran does not seem thrilled about it.
* In Manga/DemonSlayerKimetsuNoYaiba: There's Kiriya Ubuyashiki who has two older and two younger sisters. He's the only son and middle child of the Kagaya family.
* In Anime/DigimonAdventure02, Yolei's older brother Mantarou is the only boy in the family of four children.
* Nagisa from Anime/Free has three older sisters who were very fond of dressing him up when he was younger.
* The ILLUSTRIOUS ARMSTRONG FAMILY from Franchise/FullmetalAlchemist consists of four daughters and one son, Alex, who is the second youngest. He has the most prominent role in the story out of all of them, being a recurring character from the beginning, but his eldest sister Olivier does eventually step in to play an important role as well. Their youngest sister, Catherine, only appears briefly, and their other sisters, Amue and Strongine, are almost entirely AllThereInTheManual.
* Manga/HunterXHunter: The Zoldyck family is a zig-zagged example: their five children are all biologically male, but the second youngest Alluka is the only one to dress, act like a girl and refers to herself as one. To complicate this, the rest of the family who shun her and treat her like a thing refer to her as male, but Killua, the only one who loves her, treats her like a girl.
* Manga/IceRevolution Misaki became an extreme tomboy growing up as the only girl in a family of extremely macho martial artists. However, she does not come into conflict with any of them until she decides she wants to take up the "girly" sport of figure skating. Even then it serves more as backstory than a plot point.
* Anime/JinzoKonchuKabutoBorgVXV: Venetian's brother is the middle child and only son of the Itari family.
* Manga/KaguyaSamaLoveIsWar: Kaguya has three older brothers. Although it speaks volumes about how poor her relationship with them is when the one who is the one that she hates the least.
* Franchise/LyricalNanoha:
** Nanoha's older brother Kyouya is the only boy in the family (even more so if you go by the original Triangle Heart 3 continuity, where their father died before Nanoha was born).
** Alto Krauetta, whose family comprised three brothers. The lack of any female influence in her early life led to her thinking that she was a boy until an incident involving the school toilet when she was seven.
** Thoma from Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce would presumably have become this if the series hadn't been cancelled since he was going to be adopted into the Nakajima family (which consists of six sisters).
* In Manga/MagicKnightRayearth, Hikaru talks and acts like a boy because she has three older brothers (Satoru, Masaru and Kakeru).
* Manga/Maomarimo: Mao has three older sisters: Sakuya, Kaguya, and Ako, his more outgoing elder twin. Ironically, he demonstrates more stereotypically feminine traits (particularly CuteClumsyGirl, ShrinkingViolet, and FeminineWomenCanCook) than the three of them put together.
* Manga/Naruto: Temari, the eldest of the Sand Siblings, is the only girl.
* Quatre Raberba Winner of Gundam Wing is the youngest child of his family and has twenty-nine sisters. The catch is that [[spoiler:all of his sisters are test-tubes babies due to difficulties with childbirth in space among early space colonists; Quatre was the only child born naturally, although his mother died during childbirth and the fact that he wasn't artificially reproduced was kept secret from him.]] However, Quatre is shown to dearly love his sisters and it is [[spoiler:the near-death of his favorite older sister Iria (along with the death of his father) which drives poor Quatre over the edge.]]
* Franchise/OnePiece: Vinsmoke Reiju, the oldest child of her family, is the only girl. Her younger siblings are male fraternal quadruplets .
* Manga/Otomen: The author of Lovetic, believed by all readers to be a girl, is a boy IHaveBrothers with several little sisters. Ten to be exact.
* Manga/TheRoseOfVersailles: Played with in Oscar's case: she is the youngest of the six daughters and does see herself as a girl, but as her father was desperate in need of a heir by the time she was born, she ended up being RaisedAsTheOppositeGender and grows up to be a very strong, gentlemanly Bifauxnen who is very popular with both genders, and actually shows signs of being genderfluid in the manga and feels thankful that her father raised her as a boy, in stark contrast to her girly sisters.
* LightNovel/SisterPrincess. An orphan named Wataru Minakami discovers that he has 13 sisters, one of whom is .
* Reki from Anime/SK8TheInfinity is the only son in his family, having three younger sisters.

* ComicBook/Batman: It doesn't come up much, but in the pre-Flashpoint continuity, Cass (the second Batgirl) is Bruce's only daughter, while four Robins (Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian) are all his sons.
* ComicBook/BraveChefBrianna: Brianna has 15 brothers and no sister.
* ComicBook/MagicTrixie: Loupie states in the first book that she only has older brothers, which make their debut in the second book, "Magic Trixie Sleeps Over".
* ComicBook/Princeless: Devin has seven sisters.
* In Franchise/TheSmurfs Papa Smurf is like a father the 100 Smurfs living in the village but the Smurfette is only female. Later, the Smurfs create another Smurfette called Sassette.
* Hope O'Dare from ComicBook/Starman has four brothers. She and her brothers are all cops and it's mentioned that she is the one everyone is frightened of.
* Franchise/WonderWoman Vol 1: Roberta "Bobby" Strong has multiple older brothers, and a brother around her own age. She has no sisters and has never mentioned her mother.

* Lucy van Pelt, from ComicStrip/Peanuts, following the birth of Rerun in May 1973.
-->Lucy: A new baby brother?!! But I just got rid of the old one!!!

* Fanfic/Evershade: Kyle is the initially male protagonist, with two sisters.
* In Fanfic/FrozenHearts, , but also a sibling of the opposite gender. Said sibling's existence is something of a spoiler, since the person in question is dead as of the start of the story.
* In WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfTheGalaxyRangers Fanon, Walter "Doc" Hartford was the only son in the family with anywhere from three to six sisters.
* Fanfic/BridgeToTerabithia2TheLastTime: Outnumbered cousins. Probably a ContinuityNod to the novel (see Literature section), a later chapter set in Thanksgiving had Jess visiting Leslie, who is gathered with every Burke cousin... and realizing amongst the Burkes, there are only 4 girls (Leslie included) against 11 boys.
* Some WesternAnimation/TheLoudHouse fanfics play this trope for drama with Lincoln getting treated in ways that would never fly with his sisters because he's the only boy or feeling that way even if it isn't true.
* FanFic/ThePiecesLieWhereTheyFell: Vix-Lei the minotaur is the only girl in the family, outnumbered by her seven younger brothers - Herakles, Eusebios, Argus, Baltsaros, Marinos, Pyrrhus and Yanni.
* Fanfic/BoysDoTankary: Vincent is the youngest of seven children, and has six older sisters. Unfortunately, his mother, believing that only girls should do tankery, gave him away, which makes you wonder if she's done so before.
* Fanfic/WhereTalentGoesToDie: The Akasaka family has five daughters, the eldest of whom is the Ultimate Checkers Player, and one son.
* Fanfic/ForumOfThrones: Lord Edmyn Tully has three daughters and a son, although only the eldest has played a role in the story so far. Princess Argella Durrandon had three older brothers, but she's the only one still alive and that makes her their father's only heir. Jenna Harking is the youngest and only girl of four siblings, and they've all gone to war, leaving her alone to help their father.
* Fanfic/NymeriasWar: Isabella Fowler is the youngest of four siblings and the only girl. Lord Jeremie Gargalen is only nine and is the only son with three older sisters (one is her full-sister and the other two are his half-sisters).
* Fanfic/Queenss Briar Light is the sole girl of nine children. She's also the oldest.
* In Cheaper by the Dozen, Ranma Saotome has, due to MysticalPregnancy shenanigans, given birth to 24 daughters and is currently pregnant with her first son.
* Fanfic/Quizzical: Chisel is the older brother of female protagonist Quizzical, who has a younger sister, Delight.
* Fanfic/YourAlicornIsInAnotherCastle: As noted in the second chapter, Twilight Sparkle has two brothers, one younger and one older:
--> Plus we have a speed flyer on the way to Ponyville, to contact the Bearers and Princess Twilight's brother. We have to wait on Princess Celestia before we can send anything to the Empire and her older brother.

* Thumper from the film WesternAnimation/Bambi has five sisters, which is reduced to four in the midquel.
* PlayedWith in WesternAnimation/Brave: Princess Merida's the oldest child and only daughter of the royal family, with three younger brothers (who're also triplets). While Merida does have some problems with her brothers (even calling them "wee devils" near the beginning of the movie), she seems to get along with them just fine. The main conflict of the film comes from the fact that Merida's a TomboyPrincess being forced into a ladylike role by her mother.
* In the animated adaptation of WesternAnimation/HortonHearsAWho, Jojo's the only son in a family, but has 96 younger sisters. No wonder he feels a little left out.
* In WesternAnimation/HotelTransylvania movies, Winnie and Sunny are the only two daughters in a family with 300 werewolf children.
* At the end of WesternAnimation/HowToTrainYourDragonTheHiddenWorld,
* In WesternAnimation/TheIncredibles, Bob and Helen have three children, consisting of one daughter named Violet (who's the oldest) and two sons named Dash (the middle child) and Jack-Jack (the youngest).
* At the end of WesternAnimation/LadyAndTheTramp, the titular dog couple eventually become the parents of four puppies: three daughters who look identical to their mother and a son who looks identical to their father. (Averted in the ComicStrip/Scamp comic strip, which says one of the Lady-resembling puppies is a boy, Scooter, giving them two of each.)
** The exact same is true with Dogfaces Doppler and Amelia's children from WesternAnimation/TreasurePlanet.
* The Disney version of WesternAnimation/RobinHood has the rabbit family consisting of many sons and two daughters (one girl is the oldest child, the other is the youngest child).
* Similar to the example in Lady and the Tramp, at the end of WesternAnimation/RoverDangerfield, the TitleCharacter and his love interest (a dog named Daisy) end up having a litter of six puppies, five of whom look identical to Rover while the remaining sixth puppy looks identical to Daisy.
* In WesternAnimation/ShrekTheThird, Shrek and Fiona end up having triplets, two sons named Farkle and Fergus and one daughter named Felicia.

* Film/FourSistersAndAWedding: CJ's both the youngest and the only son of five kids.
* In Film/TheJaneAustenBookClub, Grigg has three older sisters (one of whom winds up helping with his and Jocelyn's romantic issues). He notes that his love of sci-fi started as a "guy thing" that he and his dad could do together (only later learning that some of their favorite writers were women).
** Allegra has two brothers, but at one point her parents note the irony that she's the one who keeps getting hospitalized due to a passion for extreme sports.
* Downplayed with the Film/Halloweentown movies: Dylan is the middle child/only boy in his family, and generally stands out from his two sisters, one older and one younger, due to being a nerd who DoesNotLikeMagic, whereas his sisters have embraced their witch heritage enthusiastically. That is, until the climax of the first movie, in which, in a fit of rage at the BigBad, Dylan discovers, much to his surprise/disappointment, that like his sisters, he too has magical properties, which he must combine with his sisters' (along with those of his mother and grandmother) in order to defeat the villain. Even then, he only accepts his training as a warlock somewhat grudgingly.
* Film/TheLegendOfFrenchieKing: Maria has four brothers whom she bosses around. They, in turn, are men children and intimidated by her.
* A Little Rascals short, Our Gang, illustrates this trope with a hint of ValuesDissonance. Mickey is picked on by his two sisters and hopes that the baby his mother is pregnant with is a boy. Somebody tells him that every fourth child in the world is born Chinese. He's upset by the idea of having a Chinese younger brother but eventually comes to accept it. Unfortunately from his point of view, his mother gives birth to another girl.
* Roberta from Film/NowAndThen had three older brothers and no sisters. The brothers are only briefly seen but it explains (at least to a certain extent) why she's such a tomboy.
* Adam Sandler's character in Film/PunchDrunkLove.
* Film/SheShootsStraight: Inspector Huang is the eldest and only male in his family, with five younger sisters. All six siblings are police officers.

* The Literature/AllOfAKindFamily had five daughters before their son was born.
* LightNovel/AscendanceOfABookworm: When the female protagonist gets AdoptedIntoRoyalty (technically nobility), the nobleman passing her off as her formerly SentIntoHiding biological daughter and her adoptive father have, between them, four sons with whom she can interact as siblings of the same mother and no daughters. The mother of the protagonist's three "biological" brothers is rolling with the whole thing in part because it allows her to finally have a part in raising a daughter. When her adoptive father's only biological daughter approaches the age of leaving the nursery, where she could only be visited by her parents and biological brother, the protagonist and her adoptive sister are both very happy at the idea of having each other.
* Kristy, the President of the Literature/BabySittersClub, grew up with two older brothers and one younger brother. She finally gets a stepsister, Karen, when her mother marries Watson Brewer... except Watson also has a son from his first marriage, Andrew. The parents then adopt a baby girl, Emily, making it slightly more even.
* Literature/TheBerenstainBears: Brother Bear is the oldest and only son of the Bear Family's three siblings, who were added in as the series went on: Sister Bear was added in "The Berenstain Bears' New Baby" in 1974, followed by a second sister, Honey, in "The Berenstain Bears and Baby Makes Five" in 2000.
* Jesse in Literature/BridgeToTerabithia feels alienated due to having four sisters, no brothers, and a disapproving father. He's also the Syndrome.
-->Leslie: You're lucky to have a sister.\\
Jesse: Yeah, I got four of 'em, and I'd trade them all for a good dog. \\
Leslie: (wistfully) I'd love to have a dog.This is technically from TheFilmOfTheBook.
* In Literature/ABrothersPrice Jerin (who does have brothers) is asked by his new friend Cullen how it is to have other men in the house. Cullen's father apparently died early, leaving him the only male in the whole family. Due to male GenderRarityValue, this is quite normal in the setting, a family with more than one boy is considered extremely lucky. The Whistler family's neighbours, the Brindles, have thirty daughters and one son, and other people think they should just stop trying for another son, as they soon won't be able to feed all their children anymore.
* In the Literature/CassonFamilySeries, the Cassons have three daughters and one son.
* David Strorm from Literature/TheChrysalids has three sisters, including Petra, though one of his sisters is only mentioned directly once. He would have had two more siblings, but they were rejected at birth due to physical defects which meant they were regarded as "non-human". However, it is mentioned that one of them was a boy.
* Robin, the Deuteragonist of the Literature/CormoranStrikeNovels, is the only girl in a family of four siblings.
* In Literature/DragonBones, Ciarra has two brothers, two male cousins, and no sisters or female cousins. This becomes even more extreme when Ward sort of adopts Oreg into the family, a distant relative, who seems to be seventeen. This is good for her in that she has three protective older brothers, but when she meets another young woman, Tisala, it becomes obvious that she enjoys the opportunity to talk to another girl very much. Despite Ciarra being a CuteMute, the two of them manage to talk to each other about how enervating Ward's behaviour can be, as Tisala is one of the few people who understand Ciarra's sign language intuitively.
* Literature/TheFaultInOurStars: Augustus Waters is the youngest of three siblings and the only boy. His older sisters are far older than him, and have moved out of the house by the time the book starts.
* Mark in Creator/EdwardEager's Literature/HalfMagic and Magic by the Lake. The family has three sisters and one brother; but while Mark does grumble a bit from time to time, the person who seems to take things the hardest is the middle sister Katherine, with MiddleChildSyndrome: "Jane's the oldest, Martha's the baby, Mark's the only boy - I'm the one who gets ignored all the time!"
* Literature/HarryPotter series:
** Ginny Weasley takes this to a bit of an extreme. Not only is she the only girl in a family of seven children, WordOfGod says she's also the first girl born to the Weasley family in several generations. Interestingly, it's not Ginny, but Ron who feels like TheUnFavorite. The last book reveals that one of his many insecurities is that, as the youngest boy, he's his parents' last failed attempt at having a girl.
** Ginny's mother, Molly, is also the only girl of three siblings. Sadly, she's the only one left, as her brothers, Fabian and Gideon, died during the First Wizarding War.
** Harry and Ginny's daughter Lily is the only girl in the family as well. She's got two older biological brothers and a godbrother whom she clearly sees as a third.
** According to J.K. Rowling, Bill and Fleur conceive three children, the youngest of whom, Louis, is the only boy. This means he is also the only known male with Veela ancestry, as it's established that Veelas are a OneGenderRace.
* Posy from Literature/TheHungerGames has three older brothers.
* In Creator/LouisaMayAlcott's Jack and Jill, Jill's friend Merry Grant has three big brothers named Tom, Dick and Harry. She's a bit troubled since, much as she loves them, they suffer of a BAD case of MenAreUncultured, which is especially bad for a super refined and delicate GirlyGirl who doubles as TheBabyOfTheBunch.
* In the Literature/Malloreon, Belgarion and his wife are long-lived, and it has been prophesied that he would only have one son. This trope hasn't fully taken effect at the end of The Seeress of Kell (and the birth of Belgarion's second daughter), but it's confirmed by the Purpose of the Universe itself to be on the way.
* Literature/MaloryTowers has Bill, who grew up with seven brothers and turns out to be very boyish. Alicia also has three brothers, and is quite an unladylike prankster, but this fact is not highlighted as much as Bill's circumstances is.
* In Cynthia D. Grant’s novel Mary Wolf, the title character has three younger sisters when her brother is born.
* Literature/Mattimeo, features a hedgehog named Jube Stump, whose real name is Jubilation. The reason for that name is because his father shouted the word "Jubilation" in excitement for being born the first son after ten daughters.
* Suze Simon from Literature/TheMediator goes from an only child to having three step-brothers when her mother remarries.
* Isabelle Lightwood from Literature/TheMortalInstruments grew up with two brothers and Jace.
* Literature/NinaTanleven: Nina's friend Chris Gurley has six brothers, which she compares to "living with a football team".
* In Christine Nöstlinger’s novel Olfi Obermeier und der Ödipus, Olfi lives with his two big sisters, mother, two aunts, grandmother, and grand-aunt.
* Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail, and Literature/PeterRabbit.
* Literature/PrideAndPrejudice has the Bingleys - eligible bachelor Charles and his two older sisters, Caroline and Louisa.
* Literature/PrincessesOfThePizzaParlor: Seen in Pasta and Penalties: The Redemption of Princess Isabel #1, with the Perkins siblings. Oldest sibling, Kyle, male, and his two younger sisters, Natalie, and Amelia.
* Literature/Ravensong: Young Jim, Stacey's brother, outnumbered by herself, and their sister, Celia.
* In Literature/SenseAndSensibility, Henry Dashwood has one son from his first wife and three daughters from his second.
* Jenna Heap from Literature/SeptimusHeap is the only girl in a family with seven boys, and the youngest child as well.
* Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire:
** Margaery Tyrell is the youngest child and the only girl, having three older brothers. Despite that, she plays the part of a PrincessClassic perfectly.
** Asha Greyjoy is the sole female Greyjoy sibling. She had two older brothers who died in the Greyjoy Rebellion, and one younger brother (Theon) who is still alive. Her status as the only girl is further emphasized by the misogynistic, paternalistic culture of the Iron Islands.
** Cersei Lannister is the only girl among two brothers. However, Tyrion's status as TheUnfavorite means that she never felt "outnumbered."
*** In another House Lannister example, Genna Lannister (Tywin's sister) was the only girl among four brothers.
** Myrcella Baratheon has an older brother, Joffrey, and a younger brother, Tommen.
** The Martells have Elia and her niece Arianne, each of whom are the only girl with two brothers in their respective generations.
** Lyanna Stark grew up with two older brothers and one younger one, and was a HotBlooded PassionateSportsGirl to match.
** Sansa Stark has two older brothers, two younger brothers, and a younger sister, but feels alienated all the same because Arya is extremely tomboyish. Emphasized when her narration mentions she'd always wanted a sister like Margaery.
** Daenerys Targaryen is the youngest of the Mad King's three children who survived to adulthood (although she never met Rhaegar, who died before she was born), as well as the only girl. She is certainly the most successful.
* In Literature/TheThornBirds, Meggie is the only girl in the Cleary family; she has five older brothers and three younger ones. Although she is on the receiving end of kindness and love from her father and her favorite brother, Frank, she often feels like her mother doesn't like her. Both women grow to understand one another better as the novel progresses.
* Literature/Twilight:
** Jacob Black is the only boy of three siblings. His older sisters, Rachel and Rebecca, have moved out of the house by the time the series starts, although Rachel eventually returns to Forks and hooks up with Paul Lahote.
** The human/vampire hybrid Nahuel, the youngest of four hybrid siblings born to the vampire Joham, is also the only male among them.
* Literature/VorkosiganSaga:
** Ekaterin has several older brothers and no sisters, and this is mentioned as being common among Barrayarans of her generation as the result of newly-obtainable sex-selection technology. In contrast to all the tomboyish examples of this trope, she specifically mentions this as being part of the reason why she's a ShrinkingViolet. Ekaterin later deliberately averts this in her own marriage to Miles with two sets of twins followed by one girl to balance her eldest son Nikki Vorsoisson.
** In an earlier example, Drou Koudelka was the only girl in her family with several older brothers and a MissingMom. She's as close to a Tomboy as Barrayaran society allows. This leads her to become a planetary martial arts champion and eventually the personal bodyguard bodyguard/nanny to the child emperor Gregor.
* Literature/WhateleyUniverse: Multiple families:
** The Morgan siblings, in birth order, Melanie, Rachael Ann, and Rich.
** The Green Death had enough sons for them to be MassiveNumberedSiblings, but only one daughter, Lillian. The known sons are: Laurenz, Robert, Rick, one of them is codenamed "Wahrheit", Brian, and Adriaan.
* Literature/YoungWizards: Kit Rodriguez is the youngest and the only son of his family. He has two older sisters.

* Tends to be mentioned as the background of tough female cops, such as Jane Penhaligan from and Kate Todd from Series/NCIS. The idea being that their reason for seeking to compete in an all-male world is from attitudes gained in their childhood.
* Series/SeventhHeaven differs from most of these because, originally, the family has two sons and three daughters; however, oldest son Matt is already an adult by his mom's last pregnancy, leaving the younger son, Simon, afraid that the new baby will be a girl and he'll be stuck alone in the house with four sisters. Ultimately, Annie winds up having .
* One season of Series/TheAmazingRace was a "family edition", which consisted not of teams of two, but of families of four. The family that ultimately won the race was known as the Linzes, which comprised of three brothers (Nick, Alex and Tommy) and one sister (Megan). Another team was the Weavers, which included a widowed mother and her two daughters (Rebecca and Rachel) and one son (Rolly).
* Downplayed with Oliver in Series/AmericanHousewife.
* Lindsay Bluth from Series/ArrestedDevelopment is the only daughter out of 4 siblings.
* Series/Borgia: Lucrezia is the only girl of four siblings. She has three brothers: Juan, Cesare, and Goffredo. However, since we rarely see little Goffredo, it usually looks more like the only girl in three, making it kind of a moot point.
* Morgan in Series/BoyMeetsWorld, with two older brothers and later one younger.
* In Series/BrooklynNineNine, Detective Amy Santiago has mentioned having seven older brothers. The other characters speculate this may be why she can be so competitive and high-strung. Notably, only one of them has ever appeared onscreen -- David, who's absurdly good at everything to the point where Amy's husband expresses an attraction.
* Series/CakeBoss: Buddy Valastro, the titular "Cake Boss," is the youngest and only son out of five kids. His daughter, Sofia, is the oldest and only daughter of four kids. Buddy's nephew, Bartolo "Buddy" Castano, is the youngest and only son of three kids.
* Theo Huxtable from Series/TheCosbyShow is the middle child and only son of five kids. However, he seems relatively okay with having four sisters despite having to deal with the usual sibling stuff (such as a shortage of bathroom time).
* Wyatt from Series/CrashAndBernstein was this to his 3 sisters, until he created Crash, and Crash came to life.
* In the Series/Dollhouse episode "The Target", Echo's persona is implied to have this in her fake backstory; when Boyd asks her if she knows how to use a gun, she replies with, "Four brothers, none of them Democrats."
* Another "tough female cop" example is Jo Lupo from .
* Daphne from has eight brothers. She generally gets along with most of them, with the exception of Simon, but occasionally notes that it wasn't always pleasant being the only girl. Apparently her brothers considered it a rite of passage to peek on her in the shower which has led to her being very defensive of her privacy. A later episode implies that her grandmother told her that only female members of the family had "psychic powers" to make Daphne feel better about being the only girl in the family.
* Joey from Series/Friends has seven sisters and he's the only male. He's perfectly happy to be the only boy in the family and adores his sisters.
* Series/GameOfThrones:
** Lyanna Stark is the only female of Ned's siblings.
** Myrcella Baratheon is the only female of her siblings.
** Yara Greyjoy is Balon's only daughter.
* Yet another is Teresa Lisbon from Series/TheMentalist, although she mentions a few times that she practically raised them after their mother died, so the existence of traditional sibling rivalry is questionable.
* Erica in Series/TheGoldbergs, in which she has two brothers. Erica is in fact based on Adam Goldberg's real-life brother, Eric; he has no sisters.
* The family in Series/JustTheTenOfUs consists of six daughters and only two sons. And one of the boys is a toddler.
* Series/LandOfTheLost1991: The Sorceress had several brothers. When Annie asks her how she survived, she says she turned them into toads. Annie entertains the thought of doing it to Kevin.
* The main hook of the series Series/LifeWithBoys is that a girl has to deal with an older, younger, and twin brother as well as a single dad, resulting in her balancing tomboy traits and girlier issues.
* Marti Venturi is the only girl of the Venturis in Series/LifeWithDerek.
* Series/MagnificentCentury: Mihrimah Sultan is the only girl of six siblings. She has five brothers: an elder half-brother and brother--Şehzade Mustafa and Şehzade Mehmet--and three younger brothers--Şehzade Selim, Şehzade Bayezid, and Şehzade Cihangir. Unsurprisingly, Mihrimah is the apple of their father Suleyman's eye.
* Mixed-ish: Downplayed with Johan, who is not only the only male sibling, but the middle child of the Jackson family.
* Luke from Series/ModernFamily has two older sisters and no brothers. Therefore, he's often left out entirely from episodes that revolve around the SiblingYinYang between Haley and Alex. He seems to find surrogate brothers in his dad and Manny (his step-uncle, who's also a kid in his class at school). Later, and to a lesser degree, he finds another surrogate brother in his uncle Mitchell, who wants to adopt a second child but is unsure if he'd be a good parent to a boy, and decides to try out with Luke, but ends up doing all the rebellious "boy" stuff he missed out on in his own childhood instead.
* This is the basic premise behind the short-lived sitcom Odd Man Out: a teenage boy is shown to be the youngest and only son of four kids.
* Series/TheOriginals: Claire Holt's character Rebekah Mikaelson, the second youngest of 6 and the only girl spent a thousand years that way until her long lost sister Freya was introduced.
* Pun aside, Karen from Series/Outnumbered is the youngest of three and the only girl. Comes up once or twice, though ironically it's usually her mother Sue who gets a sudden urge to have a "girly day" away from the boys; Karen is quite capable of holding her own against her brothers, Jake and Ben.The title of the series refers to the children outnumbering their parents, not Jake and Ben outnumbering Karen.

* Series/PeakyBlinders: Of if the five Shelby siblings, Ada is the only girl, with brothers Arthur, Tommy, John, and Finn.
* Series/Roseanne: Youngest child DJ was the only boy out of the Conner children, and he was often overlooked by writers in favor of TheGloriousWarOfSisterlyRivalry between Becky and Darlene. Even when Becky was temporarily PutOnABus, Darlene still garnered more attention due to her on-and-off relationship with David. Dan and Roseanne did eventually have another son, Jerry Garcia Conner, though it's left vague whether Jerry actually existed or was part of the book Roseanne wrote to get over the death of Dan.
** The revival seasons RetCon said ending, but it's worth noting that the now-adult Jerry doesn't appear and DJ is still OutOfFocus compared to his sisters.
* In Series/StepByStep, Carol has two daughters and a son from her first marriage; Frank has two sons and a daughter from his. After they marry, they have one daughter together.
* Alex as the middle child on Series/WizardsOfWaverlyPlace, sandwiched between two brothers. Their father, Jerry, also has a brother and sister.
-->Jerry: I was one away from all boys.

* Bill from Music/TheWho song "I'm a Boy" is saddled with three sisters and a mother who acts as if he was a girl as well.
* Annie from the Music/Sublime song "Wrong Way" has seven brothers and no sisters are ever mentioned.
* Creator/RossLynch is a member of the band R5, which also includes his three elder siblings and a friend, Ellington Ratliff. Said three elder siblings of Ross consist of two brothers, Riker and Rocky, and one sister, Rydel.

* In Literature/TheBible, Jacob has twelve sons and one daughter, Dinah. However, in some Jewish sources each of the sons, and Dinah, came with a twin sister.
** When Jacob's family migrates to Egypt, the Bible takes the time to mention all of his descendants. Apparently, all of his fifty-plus grandchildren were boys except one: Serach, who is called "the sister of Asher's sons" (which some interpret to mean a half-sibling who wasn't Asher's birth daughter anyway). We later hear about another granddaughter, Jochebed the daughter of Levi, who may not have been born until they were in Egypt.
** It's worth noting that, since the Bible was concerned with tracing ancestries and LineageComesFromTheFather, daughters aren't always mentioned even when they exist. (For example, we're told David had more than one daughter, but only Tamar is listed with his sons.)
* In Myth/AztecMythology, the Earth goddess Coatlicue had four hundred sons and one daughter, Coyolxauhqui. Later she has three more sons named Quetzalcoatl, Xolotl and Huitzilopochtli, the latter of whom kills the earlier ones in battle. Coyolxauhqui's head becomes the moon while the brothers become the stars.
* In Myth/ClassicalMythology, the fifty Nereid nymphs also have a single brother named Nerites.
* In the Literature/Mahabharata, the hundred Kaurava brothers have one sister, Dushala.
* Literature/Ramayana: Shurpanakha, the Princess of Lanka, is the only girl of the four half-demonic children born to the sage Vishrava. Averting the CuteMonsterGirl trope, she is as every bit hideous as her brothers, although she can glamour herself into a beautiful woman.

* Chell from Podcast/Sequinox has three younger brother and an older one. Not that she minds, since she can roughhouse with the best of them.

* In Roleplay/DawnOfANewAgeOldportBlues, Katheryn is the only girl amongst her seven brothers. This is partly what caused her to develop such a headstrong and competitive personality.

* Creator/DaneCook grew up with a single older brother and five sisters and jokes that he "had to wear a bra just to fit in." He has a bit where his sisters often harassed him with "makeovers" and would send him off to school in girl clothes which got him bullied by his classmates.

* Theatre/TitusAndronicus had 25 sons and one daughter. 'Had' is an important word here: as the play starts he has only five children left, and the number is falling fast.

* Franchise/DragonAge has a few examples:
** A female Dwarf Noble in VideoGame/DragonAgeOrigins has an older brother and a younger brother.
** Delilah Howe is the only daughter of Arl Howe and has two brothers, one of whom is the potential recruit Nathaniel in VideoGame/DragonAgeOriginsAwakening.
** Depending on what gender the player selects for their Hawke, either Bethany or Carver of VideoGame/DragonAgeII was this while growing up.
** In the supplemental novels, Queen Rowan (mother of King Cailan) was the only daughter of the Arl of Redcliffe; Arl Eamon and Bann Teagan, whom the player meets during Origins, are her younger brothers. However, she was considerably older than they were and they were raised elsewhere for their own safety, so it's unlikely that there was any antagonism between them.
* Adonis Otogari of VideoGame/EnsembleStars had three sisters that liked messing with him.
* VideoGame/FinalFantasyXII:
** Ashe is the youngest of nine siblings and the only girl. She is also the only surviving one, hence why she is heir to the Dalmascan throne.
** Penelo had several older brothers, but like Ashe, they had died by the time the game begins. They were the reason why she is tougher than she looks.
* In VideoGame/FireEmblemHeroes Hrid is the only son of the Nifl royal family and has three sisters- Gunnthra, Fjorm and Ylgr.
* Kate [=McReary=] of VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIV has four older brothers.
* Theodore from the Franchise/Persona series is a frequent ButtMonkey target among his sisters Elizabeth, Margaret, Caroline, and Justine.
* Wendy O. Koopa is the only girl of the Koopalings in the Franchise/SuperMarioBros games.
* In the VideoGame/Warcraft universe, the three Windrunner sisters have a brother named Lirath who died in the Second War.

* The protagonist of VisualNovel/DoubleHomework has two sisters, Johanna and Tamara. This turns out well for him, since the three of them enter into a mutually desired sexual relationship.
* In VisualNovel/KindredSpiritsOnTheRoof, Seina Maki is the only daughter in her family, and has brothers but no sisters.

* invoked According to WordOfGod, Cloudcuckoolander Caboose in Machinima/RedVsBlue has seventeen sisters.
* Jaune Arc in WebAnimation/RWBY grew up with seven sisters who apparently kept trying to braid his hair. Where Jaune is in the sibling order is currently unknown, as the rest of his team meet Jaune's older (not oldest) sister Saphron in Volume Six. A family portrait, however, depicts Jaune as closer to the younger end of the birth order, if not the youngest.

* Jyrras from Webcomic/DanAndMabsFurryAdventures has six older (and much larger) sisters who tend to treat him as a living doll. In his words, "Hell is full of estrogen."
* Storm from Webcomic/Monstra who, despite being the second oldest in his vampire family, is the only son in family of five girls.
* Summer Winters from Moon Over June traces her misandry to growing up with three older brothers and three younger brothers.
* Milo from Webcomic/TrippingOverYou is the oldest of his siblings and the only boy, having twin sisters aged fourteen and a baby half-sister.
* Joyce from the Webcomic/Walkyverse is the little girl of her family, outnumbered by her five brothers. This is explored a bit in Webcomic/DumbingOfAge where, although she only has three siblings, she laments on one strip that she didn't grow up with any sisters. PlayedWith when [[spoiler:one of her "brothers" turns out to be a trans girl]], though Joyce has yet to learn this.
* Jinx from Webcomic/TheWhiteboard has eight sisters, which is why he spends so much time at Doc's shop.
* Surama from WebComic/Wurr has four brothers and no sisters, and three of them are older than her.

* WesternAnimation/Animaniacs has the Warner Brothers, Yakko and Wakko, and the Warner Sister, Dot.
* WesternAnimation/Arthur's the oldest and only son of three kids -- and in one episode, it's revealed that his paternal grandmother, Thora, grew up as the youngest/only daughter of four kids.
* In WesternAnimation/BobsBurgers, Gene's the middle child and only son of Bob and Linda's three kids--Gene and his sisters are close in age to each other (they're each only two years apart in age) and spend a lot of time together, and as a result of that, Gene's very much InTouchWithHisFeminineSide..
* Sharon Spitz and Alden Jones from WesternAnimation/Braceface are both this -- Sharon's the Syndrome and only daughter of three kids (Adam is her older brother and Josh is her younger brother) while Alden's the youngest and only son of four kids (his three older sisters are named Daisy, Violet and Lily).
* The Sumowski clan from WesternAnimation/Clarence. Sumo's got ten brothers and one sister.
* Odd Della Robbia from WesternAnimation/CodeLyoko has five older sisters who like to pick on him.
* In WesternAnimation/DrawnTogether, one Asian child laborer complains that Spanky's use of Ling-Ling in making shoes is making it hard for him to feed his 48 brothers and one sister.
* WesternAnimation/DuckTales2017:
** Scrooge, as per the source material, is the eldest of three children and the only son, although his youngest sister Hortense (mother of Donald and Della) is long dead by the time the show takes place.
** Downplayed with Webby. She's an only child, but is treated as Huey, Dewey, and Louie's sister in all but name.
* Two shows by Creator/SethMacFarlane both have an only female of three children: Meg Griffin in WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy and Roberta Tubbs in WesternAnimation/TheClevelandShow.
* Wendy Corduroy from WesternAnimation/GravityFalls has three younger brothers, a father known as "Manly Dan" and no mother. Contrary to the page image, not much is made of this, aside from IHaveBrothers implicitly explaining why she's a Tomboy. She does admit that her family stresses her out in "The Society of the Blind Eye," and while she doesn't elaborate, the TestosteronePoisoning may well be to blame.
* WordOfGod states that Stumpy the squirrel from WesternAnimation/Kaeloo has 36 sisters, and he's the only boy in the family.
* WesternAnimation/KimPossible:
** Kim is the oldest and only daughter of three kids -- her two younger brothers also happen to be identical twins.
** Shego has four brothers, who all have super powers as well. The five of them form Team Go, but Shego eventually quit, partly due to finding the dark side more enticing but mostly due to getting fed up with her brothers (or at least Hego and Mego -- she may get along better with the Wego twins).
* WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra:
** Meelo is the only guy out of Tenzin's three children, until his little brother, Rohan, is born in "Turning the Tides."
** Opal is the only girl out of five siblings.
** From Aang and Katara's children, Kya is the only daughter and the middle child, with an older brother and a younger brother. And in terms of bending, oldest child Bumi has no bending () while Kya is a waterbender and youngest child Tenzin is an airbender.
* WesternAnimation/TheLifeAndTimesOfJuniperLee: June, the titular hero and TheChosenOne, is the middle child and only girl out of three children.
* In the WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes short "WesternAnimation/TheCaseOfTheStutteringPig", WesternAnimation/PorkyPig's occasional girlfriend, Petunia, is his sister and the only such one in his family, which also has four brothers, Patrick, Peter, Percy and Portus.
* WesternAnimation/TheLoudHouse:
** Literally taken up to eleven with Lincoln Loud, who's the middle child and only son in his family of eleven kids. The main themes of the show are portraying what Lincoln and all ten of his sisters (and their parents) go through due to them coming from such a large family.
** The episode "One of the Boys" shows Lincoln in two different dimensions he dreamt up, with the first being where he's the middle child of eleven sons and the second being where he's the middle child and only daughter of eleven kids (his female counterpart is named "Linka"). The male counterparts of Lincoln's sisters in both dimensions are Loki (Lori), Loni (Leni), Luke (Luna), Lane (Luan), Lynn (now a boy"Lynn" is technically a unisex name), Lars (Lucy), Leif (Lana), Lexx (Lola), Levi (Lisa) and Leon (Lily).
** Carlota Casagrande (a cousin of Bobby and Ronnie Anne Santiago) is the oldest/only daughter of four kids.
** One of the clients for the oldest Loud sisters' babysitting service are set of quintuplets from a family with last name "Fox," and the quintuplets consist of four boys and one girl.
* The title character of WesternAnimation/MaoMaoHeroesOfPureHeart is an only son with five older sisters, all of whom are much bigger than him. All of them are adventures that get all the respect their little brother craves, especially from their father.
* WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic:
** Big Macintosh is the older/only (also quiet) brother of Applejack and Apple Bloom.
** Minor character Sky Stinger is a major AttentionWhore because he grew up having to compete with his four sisters.
* The title characters of WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb outnumber their older sister, Candace, and unintentionally annoy her endlessly. In one episode, their cousins from England visit, and the teenage daughter Eliza has five brothers who are all around Phineas and Ferb's age. She notes that it takes a lot of discipline to survive in the Fletcher household.
* In WesternAnimation/TheProudFamily, [=BeBe=] is the only boy out of the three Proud siblings.
* On WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons, one episode focuses on Bart wanting a brother after Lisa convinces him that she and Maggie have a special bond that he can never share. First he tries to trick Marge into getting pregnant, but she catches on and, while sympathetic, notes that a new baby could well be a third sister. As a result, he instead "adopts" a brother from the local orphanage. In the end, the orphan boy ends up being adopted by a family with six daughters, who're likely to make him understand what Syaoran feels.
* Lor from WesternAnimation/TheWeekenders is her parents' only daughter and has so many brothers that she actually loses count of just how many there are, with her friend Tino having to remind her of the correct count on one occasion. That same episode also reveals that her parents eventually ran out of naming ideas, with her reply to the aforementioned correction being "Oh, yeah, I forgot one of the Dannys."
* In WesternAnimation/TheWildThornberrys, the HappilyAdopted Donnie is the only male of the three Thornberry children.

->"I always wanted a brother. [...] Instead, I got stuck with two sisters."
-->-- Arthur, WesternAnimation/Arthur, "The Perfect Brother"

The outnumbered sibling occurs when a character (usually the protagonist or at least a major character, as they're more likely
to have a defined family) is the only son or daughter in a family with three or more children. This can result in the character hoping and praying for a sibling of their gender, ParentalFavoritism either for or against the character, and the character feeling either superior or inferior this page.

It may refer
to the rest. There are few different places to put the only son/daughter:
* Oftentimes, they're either the oldest or the youngest kid in their family.
* If they're the middle child, it's
one of the following pages:
* ABoyAGirlAndABabyFamily: Family contains a son, a daughter, and a baby.
* IHaveBrothers: A sister learning "male" skills from her brother(s), or vice versa.
* MassiveNumberedSiblings: A character has a remarkably large number of siblings--there are typically five or
more common aversions to MiddleChildSyndrome since they stand out by virtue of their gender.

* In Manga/BloomIntoYou, Seiji Maki has three sisters- two older and one younger- and is the only boy
kids in the family.
* Franchise/LyricalNanoha:

* Adam Sandler's character in Film/PunchDrunkLove.

-->Leslie: You're lucky to have a sister.\\
The family has three sisters and one brother; but while Mark does grumble a bit from time to time, the person who seems to take things the hardest is the middle sister Katherine, with
MiddleChildSyndrome: "Jane's A sibling who is neither the oldest, Martha's the baby, Mark's the only boy - I'm the one who gets ignored all the time!"
* Literature/HarryPotter series:
** Ginny Weasley takes this to a bit of an extreme. Not only is she the only girl in a family of seven children, WordOfGod says she's also the first girl born to the Weasley family in several generations. Interestingly, it's not Ginny, but Ron who feels like TheUnFavorite. The last book reveals that one of his many insecurities is that, as
eldest nor the youngest boy, he's his parents' last failed attempt at having a girl.
** Ginny's mother, Molly,
is also the only girl of three siblings. Sadly, she's the only one left, as her brothers, Fabian and Gideon, died during the First Wizarding War.
** Harry and Ginny's daughter Lily is the only girl in the family as well. She's got two older biological brothers and a godbrother whom she clearly sees as a third.
** According
TheUnfavourite.

to J.K.
* Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire:
* Literature/Twilight:
* Literature/VorkosiganSaga:
* Literature/WhateleyUniverse: Multiple families:

Notably, only one of them has ever appeared onscreen -- David, who's absurdly good at everything to the
point where Amy's husband expresses an attraction.
However, he seems relatively okay with having four sisters despite having
to deal with the usual sibling stuff (such as a shortage of bathroom time).
* Series/GameOfThrones:

* Franchise/DragonAge has a few examples:
* VideoGame/FinalFantasyXII:

A family portrait, however, depicts Jaune as closer to the younger end of the birth order, if not the youngest.
