* ''VideoGame/ArcRiseFantasia'' mostly plays this straight, with the hero and villain's parties coming into conflict over the [[SummonMagic Rogress]]. The twist is that the actions the player takes in these segments (how quickly they solve puzzles, whether you win or lose certain fights) determines which party gets the Rogress. Any claimed by the villains will be reflected in their boss fights and [[VillainShoes one short sequence where you play as them.]]

* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyI'' intends for players to face the Four Fiends in the order Earth, Fire, Water, Air (Lich, Maralith/Kary, Kraken, Tiamat). However, while Lich ''must'' be faced first simply due to you not having the means to do otherwise, most players leave Maralith for last and engage in SequenceBreaking to get the Airship and class change early. The remakes take this into account by having the Fiends acknowledge whichever order you defeat them in.

** The show [[JustifiedTrope justifies]] it with the nature of the {{MacGuffin}}s; they reveal themselves individually, showing up on both teams' scanners simultaneously, and both race to the location as fast as possible. They end up ''expecting'' the trope pretty quickly.
*** Possibly averted (albeit off-screen) when some Wu show up without us seeing their collection as well Wu changing hands between episodes on occasion. We only see the more dramatic Wu fights.
*** Definitely averted in the "Sands Of Time" episode. Jack brings his future self back in time, and his future self knows the exact location of every Shen Gong Wu, so the bad guys have a serious advantage for a while.
