It is particularly common with {{Anime Chinese Girl}}s as it is a traditional Chinese hairstyle. Although in China, the style is called "ox horn" and it was gender neutral for children. In fact, the ox horns were a ''children's only'' hairstyle -- it was completely inappropriate to continue wearing it into adulthood (which a lot of Japanese media does not seem to get). During childhood it was acceptable to cut the hair and wear it loose but after reaching adulthood, hair cutting was taboo and the hair would have to be fastened in some way. When a person in ancient China had their coming-of-age ceremony to represent their transition from child to adult, men would start to wear their hair in a topknot and women could wear all sorts of formal hairstyles (which varied throughout history).

Mega Twintails is a disambig

The style is named after the ''odango'', a sweet dumpling eaten on a skewer as a Japanese snack, traditionally served at ''hanami'' (cherry blossom and flower viewing {{festival| episode}}s.) Compare DevilishHairHorns and PrimAndProperBun. This style can be wildly over-exaggerated as MegaTwintails.

%%* Karna from ''Anime/NieaUnder7'' has these in line with her "{{Chinese girl}}" persona -- complete with [[PandaingToTheAudience panda print]].
%%* Chihiro of ''Anime/OccultAcademy'' wears an odd/distinctive odango hairstyle. She immediately falls in love with Fumiaki when he compliments her hair, something no one had ever done before.
* ''Anime/OjamajoDoremi'':
** Doremi herself wears her hair in two huge buns, fitting with her naive (bordering on [[TheDitz ditzy]]) demeanor. The enormous size of Doremi's hair buns becomes toned down a little starting with ''Motto''. They are still rather large, but it's kind of justified since her hair actually [[RapunzelHair reaches down to her waist and has a lot of volume]].
** Her fairy Dodo has odango to match, which made for problems when she was learning how to make herself invisible.
%%* Miyako from ''Anime/PowerpuffGirlsZ'' has an Edo-style counterpart, Omiya, a member from the ''Oedo Chaki Chaki Girls''. She has this hairstyle plus a flower.

%%* Anita King from ''Anime/RODTheTV''. Though Anita doesn't actually have hair buns, she just wears empty covers on her hair sometimes.
* ''Franchise/SailorMoon'':
** Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon wears small high buns on the sides of her head that are combined with very long GirlishPigtails, which earned the nickname "''odango atama''" ("dumpling-head"; the Creator/DiC dub of the [[Anime/SailorMoon first anime]] uses "meatball-head", while Creator/VizMedia redub and the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]] use "bun-head"). Her hairstyle has become extremely iconic and it's made her one of the most recognizable characters in anime. It's also shown that Queen Serenity, her mother in her past life as Princess Serenity, had the same hairstyle.
** Chibi-Usa also wears her hair in two buns, though hers are shaped like rabbit's ears to reference her and Usagi's [[AnimalMotif rabbit motif]].
%%* Mei-Mei the panda cub from ''Manga/ShirokumaCafe'' wears rings of flowers around her ears, intentionally giving off this appearance.

%%* Aizawa Minto/Mew Mint from ''Manga/TokyoMewMew''.
%%* Kasen of ''[[Manga/TouhouIbarakasenWildAndHornedHermit Wild and Horned Hermit]]'' has these. Or the covers, at least. It's considerably more likely to be (the remains of) horns than hair under them.
%%* The title character from ''Manga/VampirePrincessMiyu'' has ''one'' odango (also with a pigtail hanging from it), [[FashionableAsymmetry on her left side]].
%%* Nozomi gets a pair of donut-like ones as Cure Dream in ''Anime/YesPrettyCure5'' and its sequel, ''[[OneTwoThreeFourGo GoGo]]''.
%%* Vivian Wong from ''Manga/YuGiOh''.
* Akari Akaza from ''Manga/YuruYuri'' wears part of her hair in two buns, and they're often cited as being her main distinguishing trait aside from how [[TheGenericGuy utterly unremarkable she is as a person]]. Most of the time they simply [[ExpressiveHair pop off and reattach to her head when she's suprised]], but in {{Imagine Spot}}s they're detachable, shoot lasers, act like two {{Attack Drone}}s, and are sometimes even implied to be her life source.

* ''Franchise/StarWars'':

* ''Anime/OjamajoDoremi'':

%%* Shampoo from ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf'', as well as her tribe sisters, Linlin and Ranran, in the anime.
%%* Anita King from ''Anime/RODTheTV''. Though Anita doesn't actually have hair buns, she just wears empty covers on her hair sometimes.
* ''Franchise/SailorMoon'':

Most of the time they simply [[ExpressiveHair pop off and reattach to her head when she's suprised]], but in {{Imagine Spot}}s they're detachable, shoot lasers, act like two {{Attack Drone}}s, and are sometimes even implied to be her life source.

When a person in ancient China had their coming-of-age ceremony to represent their transition from child to adult, men would start to wear their hair in a topknot and women could wear all sorts of formal hair buns (which varied throughout history).

A particular hairstyle common to anime and manga heroines that involves styling one's hair into two buns worn at about 45-degree angles on the side of the head. This can make them look similar to WesternAnimation/MickeyMouse ears depending on how simplified they're drawn. The buns themselves are often given cloth covers tied with ribbons.
