* Several CopyPasta stories involve the poster bringing a girl who is very much into him back to his place only for her to see his nerdy interests and invoke this trope. The worst part is that they probably [[TruthInTelevision really happened]]. Two of the worst examples:
** Guy takes girl to his place, she sees his wall of Gundams, says "THIS is what you spend your money on?!", laughs at him, and leaves. The kicker: She was the cashier at the comic shop where he frequently buys his Gundams and should have already known this.
** Guy takes girl to his place, she sees a sports car on a shelf. She asks "Oh, I guess you must be a {{NASCAR}} fan or something, huh?". He admits that it's really a [[{{Transformers}} Transformer]]. Cue the girl's attraction to the guy doing an ''instant 180'' and her walking out the door. Why is sports the only hobby that gets a free pass?

There is also idea that not being too nerdy increases their chances for losing their virginity, which is a big reason that EvenNerdsHaveStandards.

* A survey showed that students at elite US colleges were far more likely to be virgins than the population at large (e.g., Harvard 41% were virgins, Princeton 44% and MIT 49%, versus 13% of college students at large.) Even 35% of grad students at MIT were still virgins! You could also find similar results by breaking it down by majors with high and low GRE scores for Wellesly students: "0% of studio art majors were virgins, but 72% of biology majors were virgins, and 83% of biochem and math majors were virgins!". The page also notes that this doesn't seemed to be entirely explained by the common rational of this being completely involuntary (though that seems to explain part of it) as MIT students (particularly the female ones) were also much less likely to have ADateWithRosiePalms than the population at large IfYouKnowWhatIMean.

Also, it can apply to girl nerds as well as guy nerds. But they will still be perverts because AllMenArePerverts. In fact, they have just as much chance to be {{The Leisure Suit Larry}} as any other type of character. Some might even try to deny it, with OfCourseImNotAVirgin.

Now this does have some real life basis, in that some nerds and geeks do lack some social skills so take up their interests as a way to make up for that. In fiction, that can even be addressed as well.
