Some can even be used to enhance or create spiritual experiences. Some explode, releasing clouds of freaky spores if you so much as touch them, or crumble into "dust" that is composed of their own spores, making it nearly impossible to destroy an infestation. Some are massive underground organisms, with the growths seen above ground being less than the tiniest tip of the iceberg. There are even fungi that can infect live insects, growing inside them until the insect dies, then spreading their infectious spores to new victims. You ''never'' go mushroom picking without consulting a book (or better yet, an expert who can distinguish between very similar looking specimins), as picking the wrong mushroom can lead to some ''very'' unfortunate accidents. And this is all in RealLife.

Even more so in fiction. The right mushroom can make you [[SuperMarioBros bigger]], turn you [[{{Boktai}} invisible]], make you [[PoisonMushroom drop dead on the spot]] or cause a MushroomSamba. Mushrooms can infect you with alien spores, turning you into something [[BodyHorror Other]], and possibly taking over your mind in the process. Some can even take you over when you eat them. A villain may make one explode in your face to release MindControl spores.
