* ''{{VideoGame/Yakuza}}'' Akira Nishikiyama is associated with a koi as a direct reference to the legend. His driving motivation is his ambition to become more and better than his old friend Kiryu, the Dragon of Dojima.

* Referenced in ''VideoGame/{{Yakuza}}'' with Akira Nishikiyama, who's Irezumi (full back tattoo) is of a carp swimming upwards. Nishiki longs to rise higher and higher in the ranks of the Dojima family and later become a Chairman of the Yakuza families of Tokyo. This contrasts with his sworn Oath Brother Kazuma Kiryu, whose tattoo is a dragon: Nishiki is the carp that could never become a dragon, staying weak and unwise, which hurts him when he becomes a patriarch of his own family. Even his name seems to be derived from nishikigoi (錦鯉, lit. "brocaded carp").

Oddly, despite goldfish being a sort of carp, and supposedly being flushed down toilets on a regular basis, this myth rarely seems to cross over with the [[SewerGator "giant alligator in the sewer"]] UrbanLegend.

UrbanLegend. Probably because the carp has barbels which make it look more like an Eastern dragon while goldfish doesn't...thus a goldfish won't turn into a dragon at all.

Generic "examples" are not allowed.

* Because a fish's maximum size is based largely on the size of the body of water it lives in and the amount of available food, extremely large fish (including carp) are not only entirely possible in the real world but relatively common as well.
