strangely, lava has gotten steadily MORE like boiling kool aid in Dwarf Fortress

* ''DwarfFortress'' has a weird way with magma/lava. In previous versions (2D and 0.27.x.x/0.28.x.x), magma/lava would kill nearly anything almost instantly upon contact, and steam/mist from falling magma would kill dwarves by heat, but there were specialized workshops that ran off magma, which posed no harm to the workers. In the latest version (0.31.x), due to changes in the way heat tracking is done, magma is now more likely to drown creatures than burn them to death, and most likely to simply [[BodyHorror boil off their fat]] and have them bleed to death.

* ''NeonGenesisEvangelion'' has an example where Asuka needs to dive into a volcano. While the story makes a point to show how both she and her Eva need special equipment to even ''enter'' the caldera (though [[SuperPrototype Eva-01]] doesn't, {{Handwave}}d as it using its [=AT Field=]) she still shouldn't have had anywhere NEAR the amount of mobility, speed, or ''sight'' she enjoys while submerged in molten ''ROCK''.
** In a related instance, she has to wear a plugsuit specially modified to beat the heat of the volcano, suffering great embarrassment over how it inflates and makes her look morbidly obese -- but the suit doesn't cover her head.
** Then again, neither should the 8th Angel that just happens to look like a Lava Fish. When in doubt, an AT Field did it. Weirder things have been done by AT Fields anyway...it seems to actually alter reality around the Angel when used.
** ''ShinjiAndWarhammer40K'' {{handwave}}s the vision as some kind of EverythingSensor, which might have been lifted from [[AllThereInTheManual the manual]].
* In ''[[PokemonSpecial Pokémon Special]]'', Yellow ''surfs'' on lava. At one point, she even goes around in circles to create a ''lava tornado'' that sucks up Lance. (Of course, [[spoiler:Lance survives... by protecting himself with a giant ''bubble''.]])
* In the Pokemon anime, Ash battles Blaine in a volcano. At one point an explosion by Team Rocket causes everything to shake; a wave of lava breaks against the wall of the arena and looks like nothing more than red seawater.

* Shadow Man's stage in ''MegaMan 3'' goes back and forth on this. Relatively hot-looking lava can be seen cascading in the background several times, but everywhere else in the stage, it looks suspiciously like Coca-Cola. It's hard to tell if the stage is a boiler plant and the liquid is lava, or if the place is a sewage plant and the liquid is human waste. Either way, falling into pools of the stuff will kill Megaman.

** Most likely the case, as lava in [[TheElderScrollsThreeMorrowind Morrowind]] is treated fairly realistically (you don't sink when you step on it, you can't swim in it, and it doesn't flow like water). Can stand next to it all day without minding, though. Cryodiil doesn't have much in the way of active tectonic activity, where Morrowind is set on a large volcanic island.

When animated, it may be just as erroneous particularly in works where the technology or artistry to draw bubbling and flowing was severely limited. Just as it moves like water, it looks like someone tipped a barrel of Kool-Aid in the lake and the rolling glurge and gaseous emissions would be a couple of round clear circles. If something fell in, you'd still see them behind the red tint of cherry flavour rather than the opaque emitter of red to yellow light that it should be. In many video games the lava is actually just water with some cherry dye and a damage script (which [[SuperDrowningSkills may not necessarily imply that water itself doesn't cause damage]]), and similarly the acid and/or toxic waste will be Lemon n Lime.

*** Or simply that the Ring has such a high thermal energy buffer -- as mentioned, a regular fire barely inputs enough energy to activate its magical signature and doesn't even raise its temperature by a degree -- that it takes several seconds to overload it. No excuse on Gollum, though.

* ''DungeonsAndDragons'' 3.5 had a type of shark that lived in molten lava. Strangely, other aspects of this trope are averted - for example, there are rules for ongoing damage just for being ''near'' lava, and lava is viscous; someone lucky enough to survive getting dipped in it still has to deal with continuing damage from the bits of superheated rock still on their body.
