Compare UnsympatheticComedyProtagonist, when the only difference is that this character isn't necessarily the protagonist. It is more than likely that the subject becomes the undesirable kind of LaughablyEvil and an IneffectualSympatheticVillain. Compare JerkassWoobie and TheChewToy, sometimes they overlap, though. Often the victim of ContemptCrossfire as well. If the character eventually dies (and becoming an AssholeVictim), expect to be a KarmicDeath, of course.

Being karmic doesn't make it a different category from jerkass and villain

This is a ButtMonkey whose misfortune is well-deserved. Maybe it's karmic. Or maybe they're just a Jerkass. If the character is an outright villain, they are very rarely the BigBad - they are generally a lackey or a particularly incompetent Starscream. For many, this can make the Karmic Butt-Monkey come off as more pitiable than anything else, becoming in an AcceptableTarget for the fandom.

He also gets little-to-no respect from Tarkin and Darth Vader, losing command of the Death Star to Tarkin, gets Force-Choked Force-choked by Vader when he tries to complain about it, and finally gets killed directly by the Death Star's laser superlaser beam. But since he's an uncharismatic, pompous, arrogant, irrelevant villain who has caused countless atrocities by killing imperials or innocent people, as well as taking away Jyn's parents and forcing her to fend for herself, it's safe to say he had it coming.

* Most of the Franchise/LooneyTunes ButtMonkey cast at least give some amount of provocation to their abuse (if not always completely proportionate). Yosemite Sam and Daffy Duck (especially in later shorts) are iconic jerkasses and often mean terrible harm on their foes for the large part, however their schemes are more likely to blow up on them instead. This is played with in "Scott Tenorman Must Die" in which Cartman is bullied and humiliated by an older kid with no provocation. His attempts to get revenge all end up with him getting tortured again, with even Kyle and Stan later siding with Scott against Cartman out of sheer spite. * WesternAnimation/ZigAndSharko: Zig's main motivation in the series is to catch and eat Marina. As such, he gets beaten up by Sharko or injured by something else (such as other animals) for his trouble.

Added DiffLines:

This is a ButtMonkey whose misfortune is well-deserved. Maybe it's karmic. Or maybe they're just a Jerkass. If the character is an outright villain, they are very rarely the BigBad - they are generally a lackey or a particularly incompetent Starscream. For many, this can make the Karmic Butt-Monkey come off as more pitiable than anything else, becoming in an AcceptableTarget for the fandom.

Sub-trope of ButtMonkey and LaserGuidedKarma. Sister trope to AssholeVictim but they don't die, and while this trope is a guest character or someone only seen getting karma once, the Karmic Butt-Monkey is a main/recurring character who has a RunningGag of getting the short end of the stick. May become UnintentionallySympathetic if the ButtMonkey part overlaps too much the JerkAss part. Compare UnsympatheticComedyProtagonist, when the only difference is that this character isn't necessarily the protagonist. If the character is a villain, probably is a LaughablyEvil or HarmlessVillain. Compare JerkassWoobie and TheChewToy, sometimes they overlap, though. Often the victim of ContemptCrossfire as well.

** Brian is an egotistical KnowNothingKnowItAll with a NeverMyFault complex. He thinks highly of his (actually terrible) writing skills. To compensate, after the fourth season, he's become more prone to getting injured, being dumped by other women, and being disrespected for not being human.
* WesternAnimation/GarfieldAndFriends: Roy is a Troll who likes to prank his friends. Oftentimes, his own pranks will backfire on him, and even besides that, he's prone to AmusingInjuries and humiliation.
* WesternAnimation/GoofTroop: Pete is prone to a lot of slapstick and humiliating situations as punishment for his abuse towards his son PJ and scams.
* WesternAnimation/InvaderZim: Zim is a VillainProtagonist with plans for world domination. However, he's usually a HarmlessVillain who brings a lot of his own failures on himself.
* WesternAnimation/JimmyTwoShoes: Lucius is a cruel, corrupt dictator who loves making people suffer, but he suffers just as often as those he torments, often from Jimmy's shenanigans.
* Alexandra Cabot is often a subversive glory-hog in the WesternAnimation/JosieAndThePussyCats cartoons. Her efforts to displace or humilliate Josie always backfire. However, though Alexandra dislikes Josie, she abhors villains.
Porky Pig is about the one innocent ButtMonkey, though even he has his moments.
** Wile E Coyote plays with this. As Creator/ChuckJones stated, Wile is supposed to be sympathetic in the disproportionate torture and abuse he goes through, however another stated rule is that Wile could give up on chasing the Road Runner any time he wants, implying he brings it all on himself.
* WesternAnimation/NumbChucks: Buford is a huge Jerkass to everyone around him, but his attempts to manipulate and prank the chucks always backfire and end with him suffering some form of punishment.
* WesternAnimation/OggyAndTheCockroaches: Zigzagged. The eponymous cockroaches sometimes get away with irritating Oggy and Jack, but in many episodes (especially in seasons 4 and 5), they get what's coming to them when Oggy gets his revenge on them.
* WesternAnimation/PAWPatrol: Mayor Humdinger's schemes to outdo Mayor Goodway almost always result in him embarrassing himself and being forced to clean up the mess afterwards, especially if he was caught cheating. It's how he's punished in the series, as he never gets arrested for his worst deeds.
* Candace from WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb isn't much of one on the Jerkass side. Even though she tries snitching on her siblings, she still cares for them. Heck, a lot of the time, she's straight ButtMonkey if not CosmicPlaything.
* WesternAnimation/RockosModernLife: Ed Bighead is an ill-tempered CrankyNeighbor who is rude to Rocko. Ed gets even more slapstick than Rocko does, though, leading him to say his catchphrase, "I hate my life!"
* WesternAnimation/Rugrats: Angelica bullies the babies, but she usuallywith the exception of "Barbecue Story" gets some kind of mortifying comeuppance afterwards, such as a pizza falling on her head after she lied to the babies that she was a psychic.
* Eric Cartman in WesternAnimation/SouthPark seems to get the worst of most situations, but he tends to either cause or exacerbate them anyway. This is played with in "Scott Tenorman Must Die" in which Cartman is bullied and humiliated by an older kid with no provocation. His attempts to get revenge all end up with him getting tortured again, with even Kyle and Stan later siding with Scott against Cartman out of sheer spite. However by the time you almost end up feeling sorry for Cartman, he reveals a deadly gambit against Scott involving his parents and a chili cookoff, at which point we realise why Cartman is rarely made to win in the first place. That episode was followed up later when Scott
* WesternAnimation/Spliced: Entrée is often an idiotic FatBastard to everyone around him, to the point where Peri barely tolerates him. A lot of his stunts and schemes end in severe humiliation and slapstick.
* Squidward started off this way in WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants, being a narcissistic grouch who hated his neighbours somewhat disproportionately (and sometimes played cruel pranks to be rid of them). As the show became more sadistic however, Squidward's treatment became more disproportionate and his hatred towards [=SpongeBob=] became more justified as he increasingly made his life a genuine hell. This also counts for Plankton.
* WesternAnimation/ThomasTheTankEngine:
** James The Red Engine suffers from a lot of misfortunes such as getting himself into a mess with tar trucks, getting himself dizzy on the turntable, and being stung by a bee. Most of this happens due to him being rude and arrogant towards the other engines.
** Also Gordon the Big Engine under similar situations. Some others such as Henry, Sir Handel and even Thomas himself started off as such, but tamed into more well intentioned (if still sometimes luckless) characters.
* WesternAnimation/TomAndJerry: Tom's attempts to catch Jerry result in him getting hurt or beaten up in every short. The fact that he Determinator doesn't know when to quit doesn't help his case.
* WesternAnimation/TotalDrama: Revenge of the Island has Scott. Only 4 episodes in, but it's pretty much established that he's a jerk, and virtually every scene has him getting injured in some manner.
* Starscream (at least his G1 form) in Franchise/Transformers is the infamously treacherous little BastardUnderstudy of the Decepticons. He's also a cowardly SmugSnake that takes a lot of comical poundings, with most of his defiancies or attempts at usurping Megatron's position failing miserably.
** WesternAnimation/TransformersAnimated: Sentinel Prime is an arrogant, fame-thirsting jerkass who is extremely prejudiced against organic life. He also ends up constantly suffering from Humiliation Congas, including having his head cut off and the body stolen, losing prisoners on his watch and having his ship taken over (then getting beaten flung and frozen), and accidentally getting a beating from his allies when a Starscream clone uses him as a shield.
* WesternAnimation/Unikitty: Master Frown's schemes to make others miserable always blow up in his face and he ends up being the miserable one.
* WesternAnimation/WanderOverYonder: Lord Hater is a CardCarryingVillain with ambitions to conquer and enslave various planets. He puts on a front as a menacing, tyrannical dictator whose confidence and decorum cannot be shaken. But then Wander enters the picture and foils his plans almost every episode without actually trying to in his efforts to befriend the BigBad, and Lord Hater loses his cool and reveals himself to be an insecure and immature Manchild and SoreLoser who throws a tantrum like a five-year-old whenever Wander messes things up for him.
* WesternAnimation/ZigAndSharko: Zig's main motivation in the series is to catch and eat Marina. As such, he gets beaten up by Sharko or injured by something else (such as other animals) for his trouble.

* Manga/BungoStrayDogs: Any time Chuuya tries anything considered bad or underhanded, he is almost guaranteed to be humiliated in short order, usually by Dazai. This is even how he debuts, as Chuuya tries killing Dazai only to be immediately blackmailed and emasculated by his ex-partner. However, it feels less deserved after it's revealed that Dazai had not been a nice partner and was often responsible for causing Chuuya suffering, yet never really received any comeuppance.
* LightNovel/Durarara: Izaya becomes this in the final season and deserves every bit of punishment he gets, given he is a ManipulativeBastard Troll internet troll responsible for causing massive strife amongst numerous characters. Within the span of only a few hours, his plans fall completely apart, his minions abandon and betray him, his scheme to fails miserably and Izaya is beaten within an inch of his life before [[spoiler:he's forced to flee Ikebukuro permanently, with not a single character giving a damn]] about his predicament.
* Anime/FutureCardBuddyfight: Student council president Magorokou Shido constantly suffers punishment and humiliation from anyone and everyone, even his own buddy monster. You don?t have to feel sorry for him, considering he?s a corrupt, egotistical asshole who willingly supports the goals of several Big Bads in the series.
* Anime/KirbyRightBackAtYa: King Dedede tends to suffer the most punishment and humiliation out of any character in the show. A lot of it is justified since he?s a greedy egotistical tyrant who?s always plotting to get rid of Kirby using monsters who also terrorize Dream Land.
* Manga/MyFirstGirlfriendIsAGal: Yui Kashii is a haughty AlphaBitch hiding behind a dignified and pleasant demeanor. However, this illusion is shattered when her favorite "pet", Junichi, begins dating another girl and no longer gives her the same attention. Her jealousy prompts Yui to hatch multiple rs to steal "her dog" back from Yukana, which typically fail and result in her being placed in some kind of humiliating or objectifying position. [[spoiler:Even after she goes through a LoveEpiphany and JerkassRealization, and no longer sees Junichi as merely a "pet", she still has a habit of scheming to seduce him, usually with the same results. When one character asks why she keeps putting herself through it, she simply states that any chance of being with Junichi is WorthIt.]]
* Anime/NoMatterHowILookAtItItsYouGuysFaultImNotPopular: Tomoko's often unscrupulous ways of trying to look cool will bite her in the ass and turn out horribly for her.
* Manga/OnePiece:
** Spandam, the cowardly and manipulative leader of [=CP9=] who constantly suffers punishment since his debut from both enemies and allies. All of it is well-deserved, given that he's responsible for the execution of Franky and Iceburg's mentor Tom, severe abuse of Nico Robin while literally dragging her to Enies Lobby, and trying to get his hands on the blueprints for the ancient weapon Pluton. The end of the Enies Lobby arc has him left beaten senseless and a broken spine and Rob Lucci eventually becoming his new boss when they get transferred to [=CP0=].
** Demalo Black, a FatBastard pirate who got the ingenious idea to impersonate Luffy in order to amass an army of strong pirates. When the real Strawhats return to Sabaody, Black and his crew of Fakes end up getting effortlessly beaten up and and/or humiliated multiple times by them and the marines, not to mention pirates like Caribou who were planning on killing them to bolster their own reputation. Black is beaten senselessly by Sentomaru and arrested while the other fakes are BuriedAlive by Caribou.
** Buggy the Clown, a low-level pirate captain who terrorized the East Blue. Upon meeting Luffy, he?s subjected to one indignity after another, from having his own power exploited for a GroinAttack, to getting struck by lightning, to getting locked up in Impel Down and used as a HumanShield by other characters.
** "Wet Haired" Caribou, an AxCrazy up and coming pirate who favors burying his victims alive and tries to kill Luffy to bolster his reputation. When he tries to do the latter, he?s easily dealt with and ends up suffering all kinds of misfortunes upon arriving in the New World. Whether it?s getting his ass kicked by stronger pirates like Luffy and Pekoms or becoming one of the inmates in Kaido's prison in Wano.
** Caesar Clown, the BigBad of the Punk Hazard arc who specializes in making [=WMDs=], one of which was responsible for the destruction of an entire island, sees his own followers as expendable guinea pigs, and subjected dozens of children to an experimental gigantification formula that also . Following Caesar?s defeat, he?s reduced to a bargaining chip and tool to be used by the Strawhats and Trafalgar Law due to the latter holding his heart hostage. He?s also doomed to suffer the wrath of Big Mom, as instead of using the funds she gave him to create the gigantification formula she wanted, Caesar shamelessly blew it all on because he thought he was safe from her as he supposedly had the indirect protection of Kaido through Donquixote Doflamingo.
* Anime/OsomatsuSan: Iyami is a selfish con artist who has a big opinion of himself despite not having much going on. His schemes tend to backfire on him and he tends to suffer because of the Matsuno brothers' actions (either indirectly or directly).

* Animation/NoonboryAndTheSuper7: Wangury's petty plots often land him in some kind of comically embarrassing trouble. In "Wangury Wants to Fly" (the first episode alone), he steals some Beavyuck eggs, only for them to hatch and playfully try to peck him.
* Animation/PleasantGoatAndBigBigWolf: Wolffy's the main antagonist of the series who is always trying to catch and eat the goats, but his plans to catch them always result in some kind of slapstick for him.

* ComicBook/Bone: Phoney tends to get into embarrassing situations quite a lot as a result of trying to scam people (along with his schemes to get rich).
* ComicBook/TheBoys: Rayner's assistant Monkey is constantly humiliated by Butcher (and got the nickname from an incident where a pair of monkeys had sex with his ears) and is shown to have a fetish for paraplegic athletes to the point of going to an event with a popcorn box ADateWithRosiePalms with a hole in the bottom. When he replaces Rayner as head of the CIA, he goes into full TyrantTakesTheHelm mode... which only lasts long enough for him to corner and try to rape a Paralympics competitor. Butcher steps in to save Monkey from a CurbStompBattle (a paraplegic athlete is still an athlete), explains that Monkey isn't right in the head, and has Monkey raped by his dog.
* : Johnny Frost is an ambitious young gangster (and wifebeater) who thinks sucking up to the Joker will make him a bigshot. Every single villain sees him for the dumbass he is and lets him know it in no uncertain terms (when he tries to boss Killer Croc around because they both work for the Joker, Croc hangs him on a meat hook).

* Fanfic/TheMountainAndTheWolf:
** The captain of a dark elf slave ship is repeatedly insulted by the Wolf, then tied to the mast of his ship as it goes through the Warp, then gets sandwiched between two undead corpses before finally being sold as a slave to Chaos Dwarfs. Dark elves are among the most sadistic of Warhammer's factions, so it's hard to feel sorry for him.
** The Wolf's henchman Einarr is constantly told he's doing something wrong by the Wolf. However, apart from soliciting Melisandre as a prostitute, he's not actively shown being evil apart from being part of a group of AlwaysChaoticEvil fantasy Vikingswho are shown gleefully committing war crimes.

* WesternAnimation/BambiII: Ronno's a bully and a braggart who can't back up his claims, so naturally, whenever he boasts or is mean to Bambi, he will be knocked down a few pegs shortly afterwards.

* Film/RogueOne: TheHeavy of the film, Orson Krennic, tends to draw the short end of the stick, getting attacked, humiliated, or suffer from bodily harm whenever he appears. He also gets little-to-no respect from Tarkin and Darth Vader, losing command of the Death Star to Tarkin, gets Force-Choked by Vader when he tries to complain about it, and finally gets killed directly by the Death Star's laser beam. But since he's an uncharismatic, pompous, arrogant, irrelevant villain who has caused countless atrocities by killing imperials or innocent people, as well as taking away Jyn's parents and forcing her to fend for herself, it's safe to say he had it coming.

* Literature/CaptainUnderpants:
** Kipper, Loogie, Bugg and Finkstein are bullies to the kindergartners and revel in hurting them. George and Harold get their revenge by pranking them. At first, Kipper gets the worst of it when George and Harold make it look like he has an UnmanlySecret (which he doesn't have), but then his friends begin to get the brunt of it as well when George and Harold trick them into thinking that the nonexistent ghost Wedgie Magee is after them.
** Mr. Krupp tends to be on the receiving end of George and Harold's pranks, directly and indirectly. Besides that, he's had his share of embarrassing situations. Considering that he's a DeanBitterman who bullies his students, it's safe to say that it's all karmic.
* Literature/DiaryOfAWimpyKid: Greg is an egotistical, smart-alecky DirtyCoward who often doesn't give a damn about others. He usually ends up paying for it whenever he steps out of line in any way, especially when he tries to hide what he's done. Although in some of the later books, bad things happen to him for no reason, even if it's not (directly) karmic.

* Rachel Berry from Series/Glee counted as this trope in the first seasons before she got her CharacterDevelopment.
* Series/ItsAlwaysSunnyInPhiladelphia: The main characters are a bunch of s. They try to scheme their way through life, but usually just end up making things worse for themselves and/or each other. Two of the protagonists are considered Butt Monkeys: Charlie, a stalker and Dee who once set a woman on fire.
* Series/LazyTown: Whenever Robbie Rotten concocts a plan to make people act lazy against their will, this plan will result in him being comically injured in some fashion.

* VideoGame/GenshinImpact: Childe is tasked with . To accomplish this, [[spoiler:he deceives the Traveler to lead him to it, but when that doesn't pan out, he summons Osial to threaten Liyue and draw Rex Lapis out]]. Outside of that, he's an AxeCrazy BloodKnight with a massive bodycount. He's later not pleased to find out [[spoiler:La Signora and Zhongli had already negotiated for the gnosis and Childe was only an unwitting pawn used to test Liyue, who was was never meant to succeed]]. On top of that, [[spoiler:he's wrongfully blamed for Rex Lapis' 'murder', ruining his reputation]].
* VideoGame/HollowKnight: Zote the Mighty is a big-mouthed egotistical Jerkass who always belittles the Knight and treats it like a nobody, all while bragging about victories he never achieved. He's also extremely weak and always ends up in trouble. In fact, when the Knight meets him for the first time, he gets chewed on by the Vengefly King (), and later he gets webbed up by spiders in Deepnest and gets captured by the Fools to fight in their Colosseum against his own will, to be humiliated on public.
* VideoGame/MarioAndLuigi: Popple, the self-proclaimed "Shadow Thief", never manages to successfully get away with his stolen goods and suffers at the hands of his lackeys. Even his Bros. Attacks lead him to get harmed in some extraordinary action. It's hard to say he didn't have it coming, considering how Jerkass obnoxious he acts towards his rookiesVerbally abusing them, blaming them when things go wrong, and running away if his rookies are defeated first. In fact, his bad treatment of Birdo leads her to attack him and send him flying, and when he attempts to betray his latest "rookies" in the form of the Mario Brothers, it ends pretty badly for him.
* VideoGame/NaughtyBear: The teddy bears tend to be terrorized and even killed by Naughty (though they always come back), but he does this as revenge for them ostracizing and making fun of him even if he does something good. It doesn't help that they can never remember that he has a breaking point.
* VideoGame/Persona4: Yosuke is a downplayed example. While he often does bring his ButtMonkey status upon himself (namely when he makes fun of Kanji's sexuality or signed the girls up for a beauty pageant behind their backs) there are just as many times when he doesn't (such as getting his scooter wrecked shortly after getting it or Chie spending his money on an expensive outfit for Teddie without his permission).
* VideoGame/SuperSolvers: Morty Maxwell is the main antagonist of the series. A common RunningGag throughout the series is him telling the robots about how they can attack the Super Solver, only for the robots to use said attack on him. He also usually gets defeated in very comical ways. And because of all the trouble he causes, it's pretty funny to watch.

* Website/GoAnimate: Whenever a troublemaker causes some kind of mischief, destruction, or chaos, they will always be punished for it. They'll either be grounded for a ridiculously long time and/or receive "Punishment Days" from their parents.
* WebAnimation/HappyTreeFriends: Lifty and Shifty are uncaring crooks who steal and swindle other people. The show balances this out by giving them some of the lowest survival rates in the series, and they painfully die in almost every single episode they appear in. In the internet series, they die in every one of their appearances, and they only fare slightly better in the TV series.
* WebAnimation/RWBY:
** Mercury is a Jerkass through-and-through, constantly mocking his opponents and coming off to others as arrogant and rude. He's also often made fun of by his far more powerful superiors, and at Haven he laughs at Ruby after disarming her only to immediately get head-butted in the face. In Volume 8, [[spoiler:immediately after being promoted Salem's Inner Circle, he learns she intends to destroy Remnant and he is shipped off to Vacuo with Tyrian as his partner]]. Mercury does not do a good job hiding just how uncomfortable he is with the situation.
** Cinder falls into this after Volume 3 where she . After that, she [[spoiler:loses her eye and arm, which is replaced by a Shadow Hand implied to have a literal mind of its own and is frequently mocked by the other members of Salem's Inner Circle]]. She also undermines her own plans to . By .

* Webcomic/EightBitTheatres Black Mage, who's a CompleteMonster y. As Brian Clevinger said (paraphrased); "The universe exists to hurt Black Mage".
* : Mordecai Heller isn't much of a ButtMonkey... in canon. In the dubiously canon bonus strips, however, he suffers a lot, both physically and in the form of losing his precious dignity. Since he's a borderline sociopathic ProfessionalKiller, it's hard to feel at all sorry for him.
* Webcomic/TwoGuysAndGuy: Wayne, while not as bad as the other two, is a rude selfish slacker and often subjected to Guy's rage.
