This is a ButtMonkey whose misfortune is well-deserved. Maybe [[LaserGuidedKarma it's karmic]]. Or maybe they're just a {{Jerkass}}. If the character is an outright villain, they are very rarely the BigBad - they are generally a lackey or a particularly incompetent [[TheStarscream Starscream]]. For many, this can make the Karmic Butt-Monkey come off as [[JerkassWoobie more pitiable than anything else]], becoming in an AcceptableTarget for the fandom.

* ''VideoGame/GenshinImpact'': Childe is tasked with [[spoiler:stealing Rex Lapis' gnosis]]. To accomplish this, [[spoiler:he deceives the Traveler to lead him to it, but when that doesn't pan out, he summons [[EldritchAbomination Osial]] to threaten Liyue and draw Rex Lapis out]]. Outside of that, he's an AxeCrazy BloodKnight with a massive body count. He's later not pleased to find out [[spoiler:La Signora and [[GodInHumanForm Zhongli]] had already negotiated for the gnosis and Childe was only an unwitting pawn used to test Liyue, who was never meant to succeed]]. On top of that, [[spoiler:he's wrongfully blamed for Rex Lapis' 'murder', [[ZeroPercentApprovalRating ruining his reputation]]]].

** "Wet Haired" Caribou, an AxCrazy up and coming pirate who favors burying his victims alive and tries to kill Luffy to bolster his reputation. When he tries to do the latter, he's easily dealt with and ends up suffering all kinds of misfortunes upon arriving in the New World. Whether it's getting his ass kicked by stronger pirates like Luffy and Pekoms or becoming one of the inmates in Kaido's prison in Wano.

The Karmic Butt-Monkey’s natural enemy is often the UnintentionallyKarmic, a NiceGuy character who offers UnwantedAssistance and friendship to the Butt-Monkey, only for their actions to set off DisasterDominos or some other horrible effect that always ends in suffering for the bad guys.

* ''Webcomic/EightBitTheatre'''s Black Mage, who's a CompleteMonster {{Comedic Sociopath|y}}. As [[WordOfGod Brian Clevinger]] said (paraphrased); "The universe exists to hurt Black Mage".

** Demalo Black, a FatBastard pirate who got the [[SarcasmMode ingenious]] idea to impersonate Luffy in order to amass an army of strong pirates. When the real Strawhats return to Sabaody, Black and his crew of Fakes end up getting effortlessly beaten up and and/or humiliated multiple times by them and the marines, not to mention pirates like Caribou who were planning on killing them to bolster their own reputation. Black is beaten senselessly by Sentomaru and arrested while the other fakes are BuriedAlive by Caribou.

** Kipper, Loogie, Bugg and Finkstein are [[TheBully bullies]] to the kindergartners and [[WouldHurtAChild revel in hurting them]]. George and Harold get their revenge by pranking them. At first, Kipper gets the worst of it when George and Harold make it look like he has an UnmanlySecret (which he doesn't have), but then his friends begin to get the brunt of it as well when George and Harold trick them into thinking that the nonexistent ghost Wedgie Magee is after them.

You don?t have to feel sorry for him, considering he?s a corrupt, egotistical asshole who willingly supports the goals of several {{Big Bad}}s in the series.
* ''Anime/KirbyRightBackAtYa'': King Dedede tends to suffer the most punishment and humiliation out of any character in the show. A lot of it is justified since he?s a greedy egotistical tyrant who?s always plotting to get rid of Kirby using monsters who also terrorize Dream Land.

** Buggy the Clown, a low-level pirate captain who terrorized the East Blue. Upon meeting Luffy, he?s subjected to one indignity after another, from having his own power exploited for a GroinAttack, to getting struck by lightning, to getting locked up in Impel Down and used as a HumanShield by other characters.

* ''Film/RogueOne'': TheHeavy of the film, Orson Krennic, tends to draw the short end of the stick, getting attacked, humiliated, or suffer from bodily harm whenever he appears. He also gets little-to-no respect from Tarkin and Darth Vader, losing command of the Death Star to Tarkin, gets Force-Choked by Vader when he tries to complain about it, and finally gets killed directly by the Death Star's laser beam. But since he's an uncharismatic, pompous, [[SmugSnake arrogant]], [[BigBadWannabe irrelevant]] villain who has caused countless atrocities by killing imperials or innocent people, as well as taking away Jyn's parents and forcing her to fend for herself, it's safe to say he had it coming.

* ''{{Webcomic/Lackadaisy}}'': Mordecai Heller isn't much of a ButtMonkey... in canon. In the dubiously canon bonus strips, however, he suffers a ''lot'', both physically and in the form of losing [[TheComicallySerious his precious dignity]]. Since he's a borderline [[TheSociopath sociopathic]] ProfessionalKiller, it's hard to feel at all sorry for him.

** Caesar Clown, the BigBad of the Punk Hazard arc who specializes in making [=WMDs=], one of which was responsible for the destruction of an entire island, sees his own followers as expendable guinea pigs, and subjected dozens of children to an experimental gigantification formula that also [[spoiler:reduced their remaining lifespan to less than five years]]. Following Caesar?s defeat, he?s reduced to a bargaining chip and tool to be used by the Strawhats and Trafalgar Law due to the latter holding his heart hostage. He?s also doomed to suffer the wrath of Big Mom, as instead of using the funds she gave him to create the gigantification formula she wanted, Caesar shamelessly blew it all on [[spoiler:groupies and alcohol]] because he thought he was safe from her as he supposedly had the indirect protection of Kaido through Donquixote Doflamingo.

He's the AssholeVictim of every bad thing can happen in the series, which usually are his own invents or treats against Blaze and his friends, and different from his minion [[AntiVillain Pickle]], he doesn't regret of his actions nor try to help his rival when something bigger occurs that affect both.

* Urpgor of ''WesternAnimation/TheDreamstone'' is arguably the one genuinely evil [[MinionWithAnFInEvil Urpney]] Zordrak has, being [[TheStarscream treacherous]], bullying and sometimes just [[ComedicSociopath outright psychotic]] towards other Mooks below him. He also seems to get the most abuse from [[BadBoss his master]] and tends to suffer just as much as the others in failed schemes.
* ''WesternAnimation/DonaldDuck'': The eponymous Donald Duck. There is a very good reason his theme song says, "Who gets stuck with all the bad luck? No one but Donald Duck." A lot of his problems are self-inflicted due to his [[HairTriggerTemper bad temper]] and the fact that he imposes on other people for his own sick kicks.
* Eddy in ''WesternAnimation/EdEddNEddy'' gets picked on by the rest of the kids in the neighborhood, though the cause is that he keeps trying to scam them out of their money. Eddy frequently winds up poorer than before he starts his scams.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheFairlyOddParents'': Crocker is a SadistTeacher who takes a lot of enjoyment in giving his students F's. Naturally, almost no one respects him and [[TheCassandra people view him as crazy for believing in fairies]]. He also gets injured quite frequently.
* ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy'':
** Peter is known, especially in later episodes, to be a FatBastard InsufferableImbecile towards his family and friends and tends to cause a lot of death and destruction through his crazy antics. A lot of times however it all comes back to bite him in the form of slapstic injury and humiliation. The rest of the Griffin household are also this, as they all show that they can be [[NotSoDifferent just as bad or even worse than Peter]] and almost always receive comeuppance for their actions.
** Brian is an egotistical KnowNothingKnowItAll with a NeverMyFault complex. He thinks highly of his (actually terrible) writing skills. To compensate, after the fourth season, he's become more prone to getting injured, being dumped by other women, and [[WhatMeasureIsANonHuman being disrespected for not being human.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/GarfieldAndFriends'': Roy is a {{Troll}} who [[ThePrankster likes to prank his friends]]. Oftentimes, [[HoistByHisOwnPetard his own pranks will backfire on him]], and even besides that, he's prone to AmusingInjuries and humiliation.
* ''WesternAnimation/GoofTroop'': Pete is prone to a ''lot'' of slapstick and humiliating situations as punishment for his [[AbusiveParents abuse towards his son PJ]] and [[HonestJohnsDealership scams]].
* ''WesternAnimation/InvaderZim'': Zim is a VillainProtagonist with plans for world domination. However, he's [[NotSoHarmlessVillain usually]] a HarmlessVillain who brings a lot of his own failures on himself.
* ''WesternAnimation/JimmyTwoShoes'': Lucius is a [[TheCaligula cruel, corrupt dictator]] who loves making people suffer, but he suffers just as often as those he torments, often from Jimmy's shenanigans.
* Alexandra Cabot is often a subversive glory-hog in the ''WesternAnimation/JosieAndThePussyCats'' cartoons. Her efforts to displace or humilliate Josie always backfire. However, though Alexandra dislikes Josie, she abhors villains.
* Most of the ''Franchise/LooneyTunes'' ButtMonkey cast at least give some amount of provocation to their abuse (if not always [[DisproportionateRetribution completely proportionate]]). Yosemite Sam and Daffy Duck (especially in later shorts) are iconic {{jerkass}}es and often mean terrible harm on their foes for the large part, however their schemes are more likely to blow up on them instead. Porky Pig is about the one innocent ButtMonkey, though even he has his moments.
** Wile E Coyote plays with this. As Creator/ChuckJones stated, Wile is supposed to be sympathetic in the disproportionate torture and abuse he goes through, however another stated rule is that Wile could give up on chasing the Road Runner any time he wants, implying he brings it all on himself.
* ''WesternAnimation/NumbChucks'': Buford is a huge {{Jerkass}} to everyone around him, but his attempts to manipulate and prank the chucks always backfire and end with him suffering some form of punishment.
* ''WesternAnimation/OggyAndTheCockroaches'': Zigzagged. The eponymous cockroaches sometimes get away with irritating Oggy and Jack, but in many episodes (especially in seasons 4 and 5), they get what's coming to them when Oggy gets his revenge on them.
* ''WesternAnimation/PAWPatrol'': Mayor Humdinger's schemes to outdo Mayor Goodway almost always result in him embarrassing himself and being forced to clean up the mess afterwards, especially if he was caught [[CheatersNeverProsper cheating]]. It's how he's punished in the series, as he never gets arrested for his worst deeds.
* Candace from ''WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb'' isn't much of one on the Jerkass side. Even though she tries snitching on her siblings, she still cares for them. Heck, a lot of the time, she's straight ButtMonkey if not CosmicPlaything.
* ''WesternAnimation/RockosModernLife'': Ed Bighead is an ill-tempered CrankyNeighbor who is rude to Rocko. Ed gets even more slapstick than Rocko does, though, leading him to say his {{catchphrase}}, "I hate my life!"
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Rugrats}}'': Angelica bullies the babies, but she usually[[note]]with the [[EarlyInstallmentWeirdness exception]] of "Barbecue Story"[[/note]] gets some kind of mortifying comeuppance afterwards, such as a pizza falling on her head after she lied to the babies that she was a psychic.
* Eric Cartman in ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'' seems to get the worst of most situations, but he tends to either cause or exacerbate them anyway. This is played with in "[[Recap/SouthParkS5E4ScottTenormanMustDie Scott Tenorman Must Die]]" in which Cartman is bullied and humiliated by an older kid with no provocation. His attempts to get revenge all end up with him getting tortured again, with even Kyle and Stan later siding with Scott against Cartman out of sheer spite. However by the time you almost end up feeling sorry for Cartman, he reveals a deadly gambit against Scott involving his parents and a chili cookoff, at which point we realise why Cartman is rarely made to win in the first place. That episode was followed up later when Scott [[spoiler: organizes all the Gingers of South Park, whom Cartman relentlessly teased and bullied, to sic Mecha-Streisand on him.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Spliced}}'': Entrée is often an idiotic FatBastard to everyone around him, to the point where Peri barely tolerates him. A lot of his stunts and schemes end in severe humiliation and slapstick.
* Squidward started off this way in ''WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants'', being a narcissistic grouch who hated his neighbours somewhat disproportionately (and sometimes played cruel pranks to be rid of them). As the show became more sadistic however, Squidward's treatment became more disproportionate and his hatred towards [=SpongeBob=] became more justified as he increasingly made his life a genuine hell. This also counts for Plankton.
* ''WesternAnimation/ThomasTheTankEngine'':
** James The Red Engine suffers from a lot of misfortunes such as getting himself into a mess with tar trucks, getting himself dizzy on the turntable, and being stung by a bee. Most of this happens due to him being rude and arrogant towards the other engines.
** Also Gordon the Big Engine under similar situations. Some others such as Henry, Sir Handel and even Thomas himself [[CharacterizationMarchesOn started off as such]], but tamed into more well intentioned (if still sometimes luckless) characters.
* ''WesternAnimation/TomAndJerry'': Tom's attempts to catch Jerry result in him getting hurt or beaten up in every short. The fact that he [[{{Determinator}} doesn't know when to quit]] doesn't help his case.
* ''WesternAnimation/TotalDrama: Revenge of the Island'' has Scott. Only 4 episodes in, but it's pretty much established that he's a jerk, and virtually every scene has him getting injured in some manner.
* [[TheStarscream Starscream]] (at least his G1 form) in ''Franchise/{{Transformers}}'' is the infamously treacherous little BastardUnderstudy of the Decepticons. He's also a cowardly SmugSnake that takes a lot of comical poundings, with most of his defiancies or attempts at usurping Megatron's position failing ''miserably''.
** ''WesternAnimation/TransformersAnimated'': Sentinel Prime is an arrogant, [[GloryHound fame-thirsting]] {{jerkass}} who is extremely [[FantasticRacism prejudiced against organic life]]. He also ends up constantly suffering from {{Humiliation Conga}}s, including having his head cut off and the body stolen, losing prisoners on his watch and having his ship taken over (then getting beaten flung and frozen), and accidentally getting a beating from his allies when a Starscream clone uses him as a shield.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Unikitty}}'': Master Frown's schemes to make others miserable always blow up in his face and he ends up being the miserable one.

* ''WesternAnimation/ZigAndSharko'': Zig's main motivation in the series is to catch and eat Marina. As such, he gets beaten up by Sharko or injured by something else ([[AnimalsHateHim such as other animals]]) for his trouble.
