You can give [[GranolaGirl Marzipan]] (who is vegan) a steak, which causes her to complain "Is this a joke? It's not funny." You can give [[{{Butt Monkey}} Strong Sad]] a can of Campbell's soup (he's dressed as Andy Warhol), Necco wafers or some Baker's chocolate. Also, you can give Mary Jane (a sort of cheap honey-flavored taffy) to Pom-Pom and the Poopsmith, prompting the Poopsmith to [[SignLanguage hold up a sign]] reading "Give us something good instead." Furthermore, Strong Bad will complain about any of the treats you can give him: a fun-size Butterfinger ("What's 'fun' about less candy?"), an apple ("What are you, a dentist? Or a hippie? Or some kind of hippie dentist?"), or a marshmallow bunny ("All you've got is old freakin' Easter candy?!"). Strangely, Daffy keeps getting sucky treats like toothbrushes and combs from [[WallBanger the same people who gave his friends candy]]. But then, [[ButtMonkey it's Daffy]].

* This Troper remembers reading about a pediatrician who was offering money to the kids at her door, and asking that they give their loot to her. The newspaper however did not report if her trees/shrubbery got TPed or not, but I have no doubt it did.

* In ''CityOfHeroes'', the Halloween event includes a MiniGame in which you can "trick or treat" for Halloween-themed items or temporary abilities. One of these is a rock (ranged weapon, minor damage). ThisTroper likes to use them for CherryTapping [[BossFight Archvillains]].

** Of course it's a DoubleSubversion when they go to the principal: she covers them in reflective tape without giving them anything, and threats to have them held back a grade if they TP her house. However, Chester says he's ''already'' being held back.

* On ''AmericanDragonJakeLong'' his AnnoyingYoungerSibling Haley goes trick-or-treating dressed first as a princess and then as a dragon princess and then as a dancing fire juggling dragon princess but all she got were apples, but Grandpa who was with her keep getting lots of candy and complimented on his wise old man costume, eventually Haley gets candy when she changes her costume to a wise old man.

** My dentist gives small toys instead, the best of which is a rubber bouncy ball. The patient gets to choose from a couple dozen jars and boxes, averting this trope entirely.

** This backfired beautifully to the local bible thumpers in this troper's home town. The children all discarded them immediately onto the front yard and into the storm drain out front. Not only did they have a glorious mess to clean out of their grass the next morning (it rained), they were fined by the local authorities for clogging the storm drain.
* Although it was for Christmas and not Halloween, a friend of mine got an honest-to-god rock from her grandmother, as did her sister. The grandma said they'd just been lying around her house. Fortunately, [[IfYouKnowWhatIMean that wasn't all she got from her grandma]].

* Anyone who lives in the same area as this troper will know that money is more common than actual sweets. Fortunately, this just gives you something to get sweets with later.

* This troper has received in her bag: Cough Drops, Coupons (Usually for fast food restaurants), cheap toys (Often times in a treat bag with candy, but not always), potato chips and pretzles (Not that I'm complaining about the last two). A common joke is that teachers tend to give out Pretzels to trick or treaters. My family [[{{seriousbusiness}} goes all out]], decorating our house to the extreme and giving full sized candy bars and glow bracelets to anyone willing to walk up to the door.

* Subversion: [[TheRealCJ This Troper]] Lives in a corner of the world where Halloween is barely celebrated. As kids, we went trick-or-treating anyway, much to chagrin of local home owners. One neighbour completely forgot about us gaggle of kids, and only had [[CrowningMomentOfAwesome a wad of five-dollar notes]] on-hand.
* This troper's father used to threaten to give her brother rocks for Christmas every single year. Until finally one year, when he actually went out and got a HUGE box, filled it with rocks, and hid a tiny little Gameboy game at the bottom.
