A character's heart will beat so strongly that it makes a bulge in their thoracic wall, visible even through clothing. Usually, it seems as though the heart has powered completely beyond the breastbone and ribs. This is a shorthand indicator that the character has seen a gorgeous LoveInterest and is completely smitten. This haywire heart effect can also occur when the character experiences heart-pounding terror or extreme exhaustion.

Since this effect cannot occur in living people and still allow them to survive, it appears almost exclusively in cartoons, or as an animated special effect on a live actor.

Compare with CardiovascularLove, when heart-shaped symbols appear on or near a character. This is also a kind of ImpactSilhouette, but extruded instead of engraved.

* Occurs to two separate characters in the ''WesternAnimation/TomAndJerry'' cartoon "Kitty Foiled" from June 1948. First, Tom Cat captures Jerry Mouse in a goblet. Cornered and facing certain doom, Jerry's heart extrudes rhythmically from his left breast. After using his left hand to push his heart back into place, it begins extruding from his right breast. Later, Tom captures a small yellow canary beneath a flower pot. He peers at his prize through the drainage hole in the bottom. The canary's heart extrudes from his breast in terror. When the canary turns away from Tom's yellow bloodshot eye, his heart starts extruding from below his tail feathers.
