Any decoration a character (almost always a young girl) wears in her hair--bands, clips, {{flower|InHerHair}}s, ribbons, tiaras, you name it--to make herself look younger and cuter. A grown woman wearing one looks childish, though a character with RapunzelHair might be able to get away with cool-looking decorations; a male character (regardless of age) wearing one looks silly ([[DoubleStandard and, of course, his sexuality will be called into question]]), making this an AlwaysFemale Trope. (Except in YaoiGenre, where [[{{Uke}} cute young guys]] can wear barrettes or hair clips. Or when RealMenWearPink is in play.)

Mostly used in anime, if the author has OnlySixFaces, but the relatively mundane setting doesn't call for the more outlandish AnimeHair or even nonstandard HairColors; the next best way to distinguish heads is by having the girls wear their hair up with increasingly iconic accessories. Especially prevalent if the main character has brown hair. They're also commonly paired with GirlishPigtails.

The type of hair decoration also tells you something about her age. Double-orb hair clips and Alice bands are usually worn by preschool girls, while middle- and high-school students prefer ribbons. A particularly common decoration is a ribbon tied into a huge bow. This is more common for elementary or middle school children, and usually signals innocence.

Sometimes this overlaps with TertiarySexualCharacteristics: you know it's a girl ''because'' she has hair decorations. Naturally, she'll be cuter.

Occasionally part of a NiceHat, FrillsOfJustice, and/or PimpedOutDress.

** [[TheMedic Orihime]] has two blue flower shaped hairclips that were a gift from her dead brother Sora. They later become a sort-of EmpathicWeapon of hers. Ichigo's little sister Yuzu also wears barettes.

* Almost all the girls in ''Manga/CandyCandy'' wear something in her hair. The eponymous Candy has her iconic twin red bows, Annie wears a hairbow, Eliza and Susanna prefer big bows on the back of their heads, Louisa uses blue bows, etc. Pretty much the only girls who didn't put hair decs were Patty (she uses a short bob) and Frannie (too practical to be concerned with her appearance). [[spoiler: It becomes very important when Candy is framed by Neil and Eliza for trying to hurt Annie: Annie can't testify in her favor, but she manages to leave one of her hair ribbons to silently tell Candy that she believes in her innocence.]]

** Hayate keeps her ribbon into her mid-20s. Seeing as how she's [[spoiler:one of the most powerful mages in history, half ancient-artifact-superweapon, and leader of her own specialist team of super-mages]]...''you'' tell her she can't wear it at that age.
* ''Manga/MahouSenseiNegima'':
** Asuna wears a pair of bells on her GirlishPigtails. Especially in the flashbacks.
** Setsuna uses a hair tie to achieve her distinctive half-bangs side-tail look.
** Chao wore {{Odango}}, while Ku Fei uses... something, to achieve spiky twin-tails. Also, Kaede Nagase, Yue Ayase, Satomi Hakase, and the Narutaki twins.
** Although not a girl, Negi has his hair bound with a ponytail. He seems to have have abandoned this in his later appearances though. The ponytail magically comes back when he's not in Raiten Taisou mode.
* In ''Manga/{{MAR}}'', Princess Snow almost always wears her iconic oversized pink bow on her head. If she isn't... there's something wrong. It's also helpful in distinguishing Snow from Koyuki, [[spoiler: as it's eventually revealed Snow is a copy of Koyuki, who ends up merging her soul back into her at the very end.]]
* Yumi and Touko from ''LightNovel/MariaSamaGaMiteru'' both tie their GirlishPigtails up with ribbons. Notably, they both have them in a number of different colors and patterns and swap them out daily.
* ''Maris the Chojo'', a.k.a. The Supergal, a ''Comicbook/{{Supergirl}}'' {{Expy}} created by Creator/RumikoTakahashi, wore a barrette shaped like the Japanese symbol for Yen, reflecting Maris' obsession with getting rich.
* ''Manga/MinamiKe'': Part of what makes Mako-chan such a cute girl is the hair clip in "her" hair. [[WholesomeCrossdresser Proof that this trope is not limited to actual girls.]]
* ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEED'': Lacus Clyne has her distinctive barrette. In ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEEDDestiny'', Meer Campbell has her star-shaped barrette.
* ''Manga/NabariNoOu'': Raimei ties her hair up with ribbons, and Juuji wears a distinctive hair clip shaped like a shuriken. Raikou wears protective charms, ribbons, and at one point a hair bauble ''with hearts on it'' in his hair...though it's not like his [[AmbiguouslyGay sexuality wasn't already under question anyways]].
* Asuka from ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'' always wears her "A-10 clips", a headset that's part of the UnusualUserInterface for the titular [[HumongousMecha Evangelions]], even when she is out of uniform. This is symbolic of just how passionate she is about her career as an Evangelion pilot, and--tragically--how little life she really has outside of it.
* ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' has Sakura, who wears the Konoha headband like a ribbon (and had a ribbon prior to becoming a ninja), and Ino, who exhibits a little hair slide in ''[[TimeSkip Shippuuden]]''.
* Mio from ''Manga/{{Nichijou}}'' has a pair of wooden cubes that she wears in her pigtails, which manage to stay in place despite lacking any visible form of support. [[MindScrew They may or may not be superweapons of the Fey kingdom]].
* ''Anime/OjamajoDoremi'': Doremi Harukaze has a music note pin in one of her {{odango}}, but it's Hana-chan who shines in this trope from the time she's introduced. Even when her magical crystal scrunchies shatter in ''Dokkan'', Hana has a new pair that has wing-shaped decs (she even puts a spare on Pao-chan... a male, mind you).
* Ichigo Otohime and Morei Nekomata of ''Manga/OmujoOmutsuJoshi'' wear hair clips in their hair corresponding to their names. Strawberries for Ichigo, and cats, two with differing expressions, for Miss Nekomata. Ichigo's are distinctive enough that the male lead, Shouta, realizes she's the one being described by someone as soon as strawberry hair clips are mentioned.
* Also shows up in ''Manga/OniisamaE''. Tomoko wears a bow on her TomboyishPonytail, Aya has barrettes, Junko has two red ribbons, Fukiko wears a headband (and used to wear a hairbow in her youth), Miyuki uses double-orb pins and "Lady Vampanella" Hoshino wears a red bow. Normally Nanako doesn't wear anything in her hair since it's rather short, but when SheCleansUpNicely she tends to put on twin ribbons.

* This trope is one of the reasons some viewers was convinced that 'Pidge' of 'Voltron Force' the dub of ''Anime/GoLion'' was really a girl, the other being 'his' friendship with the space mice.
