A character who speaks with a deep, throaty rasp, characteristic of chain {{smok|y Voice}}ers, [[ScratchyVoicedSenior old people]], and many {{tomboy|ish voice}}s. This style of speaking gives the character an ominous or solemn tone, so it's usually the domain of {{Anti Hero}}es, protagonists of DarkerAndEdgier works, and [[EvilSoundsRaspy villains.]]

Often overlaps with EvilSoundsRaspy and EvilSoundsDeep (but not always). Not to be confused with GrowlingGut.

* Creator/GeorgeCScott's characters, most notably Film/{{Patton}} and [[Film/DrStrangelove Buck Turgidson]]. Only on rare occasions did Scott [[{{averted}} avert]] this trope and speak in a relatively mellow voice.
* Franchise/{{Batman}} is his various films tends to speak in a deep voice, whereas Bruce Wayne has a softer voice. This has its origin in the comics, where Batman is stated to disguise his voice while in costume.
** ''Film/Batman1989'' had Creator/MichaelKeaton give Batman a lower, raspy voice while keeping his natural voice as Bruce Wayne. This influenced all future versions of the character, whereas before when Batman was portrayed outside of comics he had a more typical heroic voice a la Creator/AdamWest. Creator/ValKilmer gave a similar interpretation for ''Film/BatmanForever'', although pushed a little more extreme as Bruce was a charming CEO and Batman serious. Creator/GeorgeClooney was notable [[AvertedTrope for having no change in voice]] between Batman and Bruce Wayne.
** ''Film/TheDarkKnightTrilogy'' pushes the voice to the extreme. In ''Film/BatmanBegins'' Batman used an intense whisper when talking to allies, but used an animalistic growl when interrogating or intimidating crooks. In the following films, he does it all the time, even when speaking with people who know his identity.
** The ''Franchise/DCExtendedUniverse'' has a more subtle version, as Creator/BenAffleck offers only a slightly deeper version of his natural voice as Batman. But he takes to using a voice modulator built into the costume to artificially distort and drop his voice even lower. In his fight with Superman in ''Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice'', when his armor gets damaged you can hear the distortion effect come in and out.

* In ''Film/BirdmanOrTheUnexpectedVirtueOfIgnorance'', the protagonist's ImaginaryFriend (played by Creator/MichaelKeaton) speaks in a deep, growling voice that's reminiscent of Batman. Keaton described it in an interview as a "bastardization" of his Batman voice.
* Yoda's voice in ''Franchise/StarWars'' is a less threatening, more {{Muppet}}y (courtesy of Creator/FrankOz) version of this.

* Shao Kahn's appearance at the end of ''Film/MortalKombatTheMovie'' was voiced by Creator/FrankWelker -- who simply reused the same voice he gave the below mentioned Darkseid, Soundwave, and Dr. Claw, resulting in Shao having a guttural quality to his voice.
* Frank Welker also reused the Darkseid/Soundwave/Dr. Claw voice for Malebolgia in ''Film/Spawn1997'', resulting in the demon having a guttural, raspy voice.
* [[EvilSoundsRaspy Megatron]] gets this voice full-stop for the Film/TransformersFilmSeries. Likewise for Soundwave, whose voice isn't vocoded and sounds more like Claw as a result.
* Creator/MichaelKeaton, again, as Film/{{Beetlejuice}}...appropriate, since the Ghost With the Most's been dead and buried for a good few centuries and his vocal cords are quite rotten. Stephen Ouimette emulated this throaty growl as best he could for the [[Radar/{{Beetlejuice}} animated series]], at least initially, but given time, [[VocalEvolution he eventually made it his own]].

* Fenrir Greyback's voice is described this way in the ''Literature/HarryPotter'' books. The audiobook version by [[ManOfAThousandVoices Jim Dale]] does too.
* The ''TabletopGame/{{Warhammer 40000}}'' ''Literature/NightLords'' series describes [[DemonicPossession The Exalted]] as having a voice like this, which is best demonstrated in the audio drama ''Throne of Lies''.
** It gets bonus points for having the only speaking role requiring the Legion's birth language and BlackSpeech for extra creepy and evil.
* Butler from ''Literature/ArtemisFowl'' is described as having a 'gravelly bass'.
* Justified in ''Literature/HaloShadowOfIntent''. Rtas 'Vadum has had half his mouth sliced off in battle, so he has to speak from deep in his throat to make up for it. (This is an InformedAbility in the context of the games, as in ''{{VideoGame/Halo 2}}'' and ''VideoGame/Halo3'' he has seemingly no trouble speaking.)
* ''Literature/SixOfCrows'': Kaz's voice is described as a "rocksalt rasp" and having "the rough, abraded texture of stone against stone." And that's only in the first few pages he's in. [[spoiler:It may be a result of him having had ThePlague as a child.]]

* ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer'': Wesley but it's justified in the aftermath of his throat-slitting. He adopts a sotto voice for the remainder of the show, and the scar remains visible for a long time.
* ''Series/GameOfThrones'':
** Gregor Clegane, especially in Season 4, to the point of sounding animalistic.
** Unlike his deep-voiced father, Robb has a much raspier voice.
** Rickard Karstark has a very raspy voice.
** Robett Glover has a raspy and intimidating voice.
** Viserion and Rhaegal have a raspy roar compared to Drogon's. This is more pronounced after Viserion becomes a wight.
** In direct contrast with his smooth and tranquil tone when speaking normally, Euron switches to a brutal, coarse guttural tone in battle, whether it be to bark commands or just roar like a madman.
* ''Series/{{iCarly}}'': The episode "iPity the Nevel" has the iCarlys make a vampire short film starring Freddie in the role of the vampire, who speaks in a low, gravelly voice. As a RunningGag, he speaks to the girls who praised his role in the same low voice as in the short film.
* Odo from ''Series/{{Star Trek Deep Space Nine}}'' has a raspy voice.
* [[KnightTemplar The Inquisitor]] on ''Series/RedDwarf''. On the commentary, it's mentioned that the actor originally shouted all his lines, but was told to growl them because shouting made him seem less in control.

* In ''Series/{{Supernatural}}'', Dean has become increasingly gruff over the seasons (seriously, listen to season one compared to season six). Castiel too is fairly growly, although this is on purpose; actor Misha Collins felt that as Castiel's natural voice shatters windows and makes people's ears bleed, his voice in his human vessel should be rather tough-sounding. (He has also confirmed that he and Jensen Ackles 'compete' during their scenes together to see who can sound growlier, although this [[SarcasmMode may not be literally true]].) Bobby could also be considered an offender, as could Crowley... it's pretty much just a cast full of [=BatVoice=]. Dean's growling voice was awesomely lampshaded at least twice: once in "The Real Ghostbusters" when a fan was pretending to be Dean, and once in "The French Mistake" when Jensen was [[MindScrew playing Dean playing Jensen playing Dean.]] ("That's how he does it.")
* Richard Harrow on ''Series/BoardwalkEmpire.'' Actor Creator/JackHuston said that he figured the deformed veteran had had operations on his throat and jaw that would affect his voice, so he stuffed his mouth with cotton balls and came up with the voice for the audition.
* Michael from ''Series/{{Nikita}}'' has this as well, although this is actually how Shane West's voice sounds. Lampshaded by Alex in Episode 1x16.
* Hank Voight from ''Series/ChicagoPD'' has a deep bass growl that sounds like he gurgles glass shards for fun. Notable because that's actor Jason Beghe's actual voice, thanks to damage to his vocal cords sustained after an automobile accident in 1999 where he had to be intubated (which usually causes damage to one's voice).
* William Adama from ''Series/{{Battlestar Galactica|2003}}''. This is how he got the callsign "Husker".
* ''Series/MightyMorphinPowerRangers'': Various monsters had guttural growler voices, but the most notable character who talked like this would be [[TheDragon Goldar]].
* Charles Vane possesses Creator/ZachMcGowan's deep, gravelly, voice in ''Series/BlackSails''. Despite it, and Vane's rather barbaric appearance, Vane himself is actually rather clever and erudite, speaking often on issues such as freedom and the value of strength.
* Yukio Yamagata, who was therefore quite an appropriate choice for the wild-animal-themed ''Series/HyakujuuSentaiGaoranger'' theme.
* If John Casey of Series/{{Chuck}} slips into this, you'd best be ready to run, because it means you've angered him (which is kind of easy). Chuck also affects one when masquerading as an assassin who also perpetually speaks with this.
* ''Series/DoctorWho'':
** In Seasons 12-14, the Fourth Doctor - who usually speaks in a pleasant velvety tone - will suddenly launch into a disturbing, almost animalistic gravelly voice when being [[BlueAndOrangeMorality alien]]. [[CreepyGood Eek]]. Mostly dropped as a CharacterTic after he becomes LighterAndSofter from Season 15 on.
** PlayedForLaughs in the ''Fourth Doctor Adventures'' audio drama "Destination: Nerva", in which, while trying to get the attention of a character named 'Dr Foster', he launches into his stomach-churning growl voice to say "''Dr Foster, [[WaxingLyrical have you ever been to Gloucester in a shower of rain?!]]''".
** Twelfth Doctor definitely has this.
* ''Series/{{Fargo}}'': in the second season, Bear Gerhardt speaks with a deep, raspy voice that could shake the fillings out of your teeth.
* Brazilian MTV show ''Garganta & Torcicolo'' had the first character, aptly named "Throat" because of this. (the voice actor also did the other one - Portuguese for wry neck - with a high-pitched voice made the duo - [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eooIgGgyfmA see a sample here]] - basically a reverse SopranoAndGravel) The voice actor would credit this role for when he did [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lms-7p66OOg the local version of]] [[Film/TheLordOfTheRings Treebeard]], which apparently impressed the distributors, who even thought the voice had an added filter!
* In ''Series/TheMandalorian'', the title character speaks with a tough-sounding rasp. It usually seems like his helmet distorting his voice, but he still sounds hoarse without it.

* Wrestling/TheUndertaker changes his voice to speak in this manner when playing the "Deadman" persona of his character. As the more down-to-Earth, less-fantastical "American Badass," he uses his natural voice, which would also probably qualify for this trope.
* Wrestling/VinceMcMahon, as his character became more and more fiendish and vindictive, would resort to growling when angry, especially when using his catchphrases (see his page for examples).
* A rare female example is Wrestling/StephanieMcMahon, who likely takes it from her father. She does it only very rarely, however.
* Wrestling/TripleH goes through this, especially after aging into his mid-40s.
* Wrestling/BrianPillman had a voice like this due to multiple childhood bouts with throat polyps.
* Macho Man Wrestling/RandySavage was (amongst many other things) very well known for his distinctly deep and growly voice, most commonly associated with the words [[BigYes "Oooooh Yeah!"]] and "Snap into a Slim Jim!".
* Wrestling/{{Goldberg}} spoke this way when doing promos, as his real voice is rather non-threatening.

However, as of ''Videogame/{{Fallout 4}}'' a ghoul's voice varies from sounding growly to sounding like any other human.
