* Gendo Ikari from ''NeonGenesisEvangelion'' was something of a delinquent in college before Fuyutski was more or less forced to take him on as a kind of apprentice. It's subverted, in that he is even "worse" then he was before. Horrifically worse, to be honest actually, and Fuyutski had a role reversal in that he's now his Second in Command instead of being his teacher.

When the older character is a mentor figure to the protagonist, TheReveal that they fit this trop can sometimes be part of the process of turning them into a CoolOldGuy. It's also related to MysteriousPast, though there doesn't have to be any mystery involved. Many cases of IUsedToBeKindOfCoolOnce can be attributed to this trope.

* Ash's mom from ''Anime/{{Pokemon}}'' (at least according to [[TheMusical the American stage show]]).

[[OldRetainer Carson von Mekkhan]] and [[IronChef Old Man Death]] from ''GirlGenius'' both "rode with the Jägers" i.e. acted as auxiliaries to Europe's [[EvilOverlord evilest overlord's]] BadassArmy in their youths. Carson is currently retired from his position as senechal to said overlord's family and lives with his granddaughter, and Old Man Death runs a deli.

He honestly intended to tell Mrs. Skinner that [[spoiler: her real son was believed to be dead - but she thought he was her son when he showed up at her door, and he just didn't have the heart to tell her otherwise.]]

* England from ''AxisPowersHetalia'' was a pirate in his youth, but now considers himself a gentleman (though he still curses like a sailor). Sweden grew out of his viking phase years ago and is a genuinely sweet, rather domestic guy now, but people don't see him as one because of his [[FaceOfAThug scary looks]].

* Terry [=McGuiness=] from BatmanBeyond. His reputation as such is a big reason as to why [[TheAtoner he puts on the suit]], and often comes back to bite him on the ass.
** Just how bad a delinquent, we're never actually told, but during the movie Return Of The Joker, it's implied that he got out of that life after he seriously hurt someone and was put in Juvie. How badly, we're not given the specifics, but odds are that he and the people he was running with either put someone in the hospital, a wheelchair, or a coma (if he'd actually killed someone, they'd most likely have tried him as an adult).
