Direct throws are incredibly powerful but you can also hold the attack button to swing it around your character and anything foolish enough to approach you takes a reduced amount of the damage the weapon deals normally. When the flail is thrown out, you can click and hold the attack button to let it drop to the ground, crushing anything beneath it and scratching anything else that touches it afterward.
