this is a myth I've personally busted

** It's possible that the Elves actually ''want'' Dwarves to annoy them, since that's when they bring their best trade goods. Fortresses that the Elves are happy with get nothing but stacks of cheap cloth.

** ''{{Eberron}}'' has a really weird version of this between the halflings of the Talenta Plains and the elves of Valenar. Thing is, it's the halflings standing in for the elves in this trope - primitive, spiritual, attuned to nature, and generally cleaving to the MagicalNativeAmerican idea, only they ride [[EverythingsBetterWithDinosaurs dinosaurs]]. The Valenar elves, in turn, stand in for the ''dwarves'', being accurately described as land-based Vikings. The actual dwarves of the setting are geographically removed from both races and thus are neutral towards both.

That should be a WMG — it's fun to imagine, but the 'devour' report comes from winning a combat with a bite attack, which any race can do and does, including dwarves

* In ''DwarfFortress'', the Elves are not antagonistic, but they are condescending and snotty, and will refuse to trade if you accidentally offer them wood or wood byproducts. The latest versions have turned their ability to besiege you back on. Disrespect the local trees or offend their merchants and diplomats, and they send armies rather than trade caravans. The creator of Dwarf Fortress is transitioning from species-based hate to belief-based hate, with the result that ''everyone'' now hates elves for their habit of snacking on corpses. Yes, [[EvenEvilHasStandards even the goblins who are basically the jerks of the game]].

*** The Silmarillion seemed to set up tension even before either race were created, when Aule and Yavanna, the Ainur couple who would become patrons of the dwarves and elves, established their differences over their roles in the land. They remained harmoniously married, and Aule's favor with the Noldor due to their craft explains why they get along well with dwarves.

** And interestingly, one ''Dragon'' magazine article formalized this by suggesting a campaign inspired by the American Civil War with ... you guessed it ... elves as the Confederacy and dwarves as the Union.

** The fantasy/ersatz-Napoleonic wargame ''[[http://flintloque.com/Flintloque.htm Flintloque]]'' exploits this by having the Elves be the French ("Ferach") army, though they've made the British Orcs ("of Albion").

* Terry Pratchett's ''Discworld'' has a rivalry similar to this between the Dwarfs and the Trolls, extrapolated on most in ''Thud''. It's not based on beauty vs. practicality or anything like that, though. Logically enough, it's because dwarves like to mine for interesting minerals (by hitting them with pickaxes), and trolls are ''made'' of interesting minerals (and do not appreciate being hit with pickaxes).

* ''Scribblenauts'' has a classic example. While an ordinary "[[ChristmasElves Elf]]" is no trouble, try putting a "Wood Elf" and a "Dwarf" next to each other. [[spoiler:If both unarmed, the dwarf panics and is slain by the elf. If both equally armed, the dwarf will defeat the wood elf.]]

* in ''Mabinogi'', the elves and ''giants'' are at war. You never see any actual raiding, aside from reminiscences, but any elf or elf-aligned human in the giant village will be attacked on sight by the guards, and vice versa. There is also an option toggle that will cause any character of the opposing race with the same option enabled to be [[PlayerVersusPlayer targeted and attacked like a monster]]. However, the elven healer Atrata and the giant blacksmith Taunes are old friends, suggesting that the war is [[PlanetOfHats not built-in]].

*** The difference between how Elves and Dwarves interact comes down to the divisions between the Elves themselves. The people of Rivendell are mostly Noldorin Elves, who were traditionally friendly with the Dwarves (primarily due to their shared love of craftwork). The people of Mirkwood and Lothlorien are mostly Silvan Elves, descendents of the Sindarin Elves who inhabited Doriath. Even before the war between the Dwarves and Sindar, there were disagreements due to their different attitudes towards woodlands (as well as how the Sindar initially assumed that Dwarves were mindless animals and hunted them for sport).

The elves of Rivendell accept Thorin and Company with little more than friendly jokes, give them counsul, and later it seems that the Dwarves of the Lonely Mountain are fairly regular visitors (witness how readily Dain sent a delegation to ask advice of Elrond, and how at ease Gloin seemed to be.)
