* In chapter 2 of VideoGame/Deltarune, Berdly acts like a stereotypical arrogant nerd, completely sure of himself and his superiority. There are signs early on that he might not be as smart as he claims, and (after struggling with a relatively simple series of puzzles, when BookDumb Susie correctly identifies the trick to the last one), he later confirms it: in the past, he won a spelling bee against Noelle (she froze up on a word that triggered painful memories), and now everyone expects him to be a genius, so he plays the part while Noelle helps him with his homework.

The direct opposite of SmarterThanYouLook, this trope is where a character is assumed to be smart -- often due to their nerdy appearance -- but turns out to be of (less than) average intelligence. They are frequently a KnowNothingKnowItAll, and might even be deliberately FeigningIntelligence, just to mislead other characters and the audience to think that the character is supposed to be smart, before revealing that they actually aren't.

* The Spanish film Brain Drain has a "nerd pursues hot girl" plot, except that the nerd is not very smart. Emilio is actually BookDumb, despite being a nerdy loser with glasses, while Natalia (the hot blonde girl) is a very intelligent student. So when Natalia is admitted to Oxford University, Emilio needs to use a fake grant to follow her, along with his equally BookDumb friends.

* Series/MaggieAndBiancaFashionFriends: At first glance, Nausica looks like an AcademicAlphaBitch, since she wears glasses, dresses like a preppy schoolgirl, and acts like a CompetitionFreak with her classmates. In reality, she's not good at anything, has no real academic interests, and often resorts to cheating. When she interacts with Eloise, a TeenGenius who often talks about science, Nausica doesn't even understand her and finds her boring.

In "Salad Smurfs", he turns into a pea as a reference to the fact that he's a pea-brain. In fact, his original name is "Schtroumpf à lunettes" meaning "Smurf with Glasses", nothing to do with him being actually "brainy", though he considers himself such.

Fiction has some universal visual shorthands to show the audience that a character is smart, such as: wearing glasses, or a labcoat, having a big brain, a very verbose, and seemingly eloquent, speech pattern (probably with a posh accent), or a quiet and dignified demeanour that implies a deep and thoughtful introspection. Maybe they have all this, and more.

Extraverted Nerd was disambig'd per TRS

Compare/contrast ExtravertedNerd, where the character defies the "shy and awkward" stereotype of a nerd by being outspoken and HotBlooded, but is not necessarily unintelligent.

* Series/FamilyTies: Alex's friend Skippy looks and acts like an ExtravertedNerd (socially inept, nerdy clothes, NerdGlasses), but he has no academic intelligence. Alex considers him even less intelligent than Mallory, Alex's BookDumb superficial sister. In "Designated Hitter", it's revealed that Mallory is Smarter Than She Looks, while Skippy has an ImprobablyLowIQ that can't even be calculated.

Fiction has some universal visual shorthands to show the audience that a character is smart. Maybe they wear glasses. Maybe they walk around in a labcoat. Maybe they have a big brain. Maybe they project a quiet and dignified demeanour that implies a deep and thoughtful introspection. Maybe they have a very verbose, and seemingly eloquent, speech pattern, probably with a posh accent. Maybe they have all this, and more.

Then there is this character who ticks one or more of the above boxes... except for the fact that they're not actually smart. Maybe they're even stupid. Their bad eyesight is due to genetics or caused by playing too many video games, rather than studious reading. They're wearing the labcoat to serve as a substitute BadassLongcoat. Their enlarged cranium turns out to be more bone than brain. That introspective look they have? Well, they're just thinking about food or sleep.
