Before adding examples, keep the following guidelines in mind: This trope ''should'' only count for works that were finished or released in complete form ''before'' being altered. Works that are declared DisContinuity (or AlternateContinuity) but still carry the franchise's name and other identifying markers also do not count. And also remember the all-important term "franchise"--works that aren't part of a series obviously have nothing to be "divorced" from.

* ''Adventure Island'' on the Nintendo Entertainment System was actually a graphics hack of Sega's ''Wonder Boy'' (Sega and Nintendo's rivalry is likely why the hack was made in the first place).
** Oddly enough, in Japan the PC-Engine port of ''Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap'' was called ''Adventure Island'' in Japan and ''Dragon's Curse'' in North America. This is odd as every other system ''Wonder Boy 3'' appeared on kept its original title.
* ''Blazing Lazers'' for the Turbografx-16. The original PC-Engine version was a tie-in to the movie ''Gunhed.''
*''DecapAttack'' was originally a tie-in to the anime ''Magical Hat'' in its Japanese version. But the localization team didn't feel like paying the licensing fees for an obscure and unimported Anime so the graphics and story were redone from scratch.
* ''Dragon Power'' for the Nintendo Entertainment System was originally a ''Dragon Ball'' game. At the time, ''Dragon Ball'' was not well-known in the United States. It appears like they tried to change it into just a generally oriental-themed game.
* ''The Last Battle'' for the Sega Genesis is about a hero named Aarzak battling mutants and cyborgs in a post-apocalyptic landscape using a secret martial arts technique called Jet-Kwan-Do to rescue his lady friend Alyssa from the evil Duke. There's a reason that sounds familiar: in Japan, this was a ''Fist of the North Star'' game.
* The manga ''Peacock King Kujaku-O'' (the OVAs of which are sometimes known as ''Spirit Warrior'' or just ''Peacock King'' stateside) spawned to video games that I know of: one for the Sega Master System and one for the Sega Genesis. The Sega Master System came out in America as ''Magician Lord'' and the Genesis one came out as ''Mystic Defender,'' in both cases having all the ''Peacock King'' elements replaced with wholly new storylines and characters.
* ''Street Combat'' for the Super Nintendo was originally a ''Ranma 1/2'' game in which you played as either male or female Ranma and battled the rest of the anime cast. The U.S. version turned Ranma into two separate characters and replaced the Ranma cast with all sorts of things (Kodachi, for example, became a ''clown'').
* ''Thunder Force IV'' for the Sega Genesis (aka the Mega Drive) was released in America was ''Lightening''[sic] ''Force: Quest for the Darkstar.'' This was odd, as previous games in the ''Thunder Force'' series had come out under their real names, and ''Thunder Force IV'' came out under its real name in Europe.
* ''U.N. Squadron,'' a side-scrolling shooter for the Super Nintendo, was originally based on the manga ''Area 88.''
* ''Wonder Boy in Monster Land'' oddly experienced this ''in Japan.'' It was ported to the Famicom, twice: Once as ''Bikkuriman World'' (to capitalize on the success of a then-popular anime) and again, by Jaleco, as ''Saiyuki World'' (replacing the characters and setting with those of the public-domain ''Journey to the West'').
** ''Saiyuki World'' actually spawned a sequel, which came out in America as ''Whomp 'Em'' and tried to replace the oriental mythology with Native Americans.
