Mr. Blonde, the PsychoPartyMember of the heist team, managed to capture a cop during the chaos of escaping the heist gone wrong (and police sting, summoned by TheMole amongst the team) and gets ready to torture him. The other members of the team argued long and hard about the cop having knowledge of who is the mole and whether or not [[TortureIsInefficient torturing him would make him cough it out]], but Blonde makes clear to the cop he does not gives a damn. He just wants to kill a cop. And if the cop knows anything about the spring and he gives it out during the torture to try to make Blonde stop or to get a MercyKill, it's not going to happen. And so the torture begins...

Still, [[MauveShirt Lieutenant Groves]] tries to put down a British flag and claim the Fountain in the name of the King. A split second after he has finished saying that, [[NoNonsenseNemesis the Spaniard]] puts a bullet in his heart and carries on his assignment [[spoiler:to destroy the Fountain in the name of the Church, because the Fountain is pagan sorcery and man should only achieve immortality through God -- in his defense, [[PoweredByAForsakenChild the Fountain works by absorbing a victim's lifeforce and giving it to other people]], so he is not incorrect]], adding that [[PetTheDog he wants everybody to take note of Graves' bravery]].

** One genuine instance is when the second of the two killers is apparently dead at the end of [[Film/{{Scream 1996}} the first film]]. Randy Meeks says this is the moment when the killer comes back to life for one last scare. The killer promptly does, but Sidney, without flinching, puts a bullet in his head: "Not in my movie." Sidney then goes on to defy JokerImmunity through the rest of the series by killing the "Ghostface" copy-cat-of-the-film as well, usually by BoomHeadshot. Maybe the ''[[LegacyCharacter concept]]'' of the Ghostface will live on, especially [[IfItBleedsItLeads with all of the media trying to profit from it]], but the killers sure ''don't''.
** Also used in [[Film/{{Scream 2}} the second film]]. A black man leaves town when the bodies start piling up, because he knows "[[BlackDudeDiesFirst how long brothers last in these movies]]". He lives.

* In ''VideoGame/{{Portal 2}}'', the FinalBoss defies BossArenaIdiocy by studying the recordings of how you defeated the previous boss and deliberately setting up the arena to avoid those same mistakes. The trope is then [[ZigZaggedTrope zig zagged]] by having the boss make a new set of glaringly obvious mistakes.

* The DM of ''Webcomic/DMOfTheRings'' will not tolerate OffTheRails when he can help it. Only twice do the players pull it off.

* In [[WebVideo/TheSpoonyExperiment Spoony's]] review of the ''Wing Commander'' movie, he takes one look at the cover (showing Matthew Lillard and Freddie Prinze Jr.) and shrieks in terror. He explains thusly: "You know that thing, [[CoversAlwaysLie you can't trust a book by its cover?]] Well fuck you! That's books, not movies!"
* Literature/{{Worm}} gives [[SensibleHeroesSkimpyVillains quite]] [[BondVillainStupidity a]] [[ThereAreNoTherapists few]] [[ImpossiblyCoolClothes examples]] but notably [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds inv]][[RoaringRampageOfRevenge okes]] Carrie and then defies that route in the very first chapter.

* ''Fanfic/TheSunWillComeUpAndTheSeasonsWillChange'' defies CassandraTruth. [[spoiler: Mary knows nobody would believe her about the Infinity Train, so she doesn’t even bother trying to tell anybody about it. Instead, she claims that after running away, she survived out in the woods, met Nora and lived in the hut the latter had created for a while, [[MetaphoricallyTrue and that Nora had tried to kill her after finding out that she was autistic]]. She also told the police what she knew about Nora’s neo-Nazi ideals and her ties with Xander, but didn’t tell them about her SpitefulSuicide as she thought her body would have remained stuck in the Infinity Train’s realm. The story does come under scrutiny between the lack of physical evidence that Mary was at the hut and nobody being able to figure out Nora’s cause of death after her body was returned to Earth. However, as there was no evidence ''disproving'' Mary’s testimony and since Nora’s memories gave Mary details about the hut that she would only have known if she had actually seen it, the police decide to just close the cases on Mary and Nora’s disappearances.]]

* ''Series/HannahMontana'': Miley is GenreSavvy enough to [[BathroomStallOfOverheardInsults check for feet under the stalls]] before talking about her SecretIdentity with Lilly in the ladies' room.

* ''Film/WithoutWarning1994'' defies ApocalypticGagOrder. When the government detects a wave of meteors en route to three of the world's biggest capitals (the work of aliens that are performing FirstContact and got irate when [[WeComeInPeaceShootToKill mankind decided to defend itself]]) and decides to keep quiet while they prepare a strategy to intercept them, TheWormGuy who theorized it's first contact immediately calls it quits, declares what is going on to the reporters broadcasting live, and leaves to spend what he believes are his (and mankind's) final hours with his family (which turned out to be [[EverybodyDiesEnding a very accurate prediction]]).

* Judai of ''Anime/YuGiOhGX'' says he realizes it's pointless to give a KirkSummation to Yubel.
** Also, when Asuka is encouraged to become an IdolSinger, she actively refuses to become one.
* Rei Kiriyama from ''Manga/MarchComesInLikeALion'' defies both attempts by his adopted sister Kyoko to manipulate him into losing his professional shogi matches [[ThrowingTheFight on purpose]].
* Kagome Higurashi from ''Manga/InuYasha'' openly defies UnrequitedTragicMaiden [[spoiler: and LoveMakesYouEvil]]. When she's told ''[[MindRape repeatedly]]'' by [[spoiler: The Baby]] that her feelings for Inuyasha are completely one-sided and she's selfish for even thinking he can love her back, that he'll never love her like he loved Kikyou [[spoiler: and that she must pull a FaceHeelTurn]], she ultimately tells him that yes, she ''is'' jealous of Kikyou and she ''is'' aware that Kikyou will always be important to Inuyasha... but that said circumstances ''do NOT invalidate HER own feelings'', and no one has right to tell her otherwise. [[spoiler: And then she rejects the Baby's FHT offer.]]
* In the ''[[Manga/MagicKnightRayearth Magic Knight Rayearth II]]'' anime, Ferio busts into Fuu's in-progress escape from Fahren's ship, being her LoveInterest and all. When she starts casting a spell to assist as though she's half of a BattleCouple, Ferio stops her--he wants to do a RescueRomance instead. He does live up to the BattleCouple trope a few episodes later, when they both fight monsters summoned by Debonair.
* In ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia'', the League of Villains attempt to invoke the RivalTurnedEvil trope with Bakugo, kidnapping him in order to turn him to their side. They have good reason for thinking this would work, as Bakugo initially seems to be [[ObviousJudas a perfect candidate to corrupt]], being a childhood friend-turned-bully of [[TheHero Midoriya]], and having grown resentful of Midoriya's recent progress as a hero. Not to mention that Bakugo is seen as such a [[BloodKnight violent]], [[HairTriggerTemper ill-tempered]] {{Jerkass}} that even the other heroes have doubts that he will remain on their side. However, Bakugo ultimately refuses to join the League, and even accepts his classmates' help in his rescue despite his InferioritySuperiorityComplex and DontYouDarePityMe attitude.
* In the ''VisualNovel/AceAttorneyInvestigationsMilesEdgeworth'' manga, Gumshoe defies TreacheryCoverUp, when it turns out that the murderer, [[spoiler:Police Chief Chase Clink]] killed someone to prevent a secret that would seemingly do harm to the police department's credibility from coming to light, although unbeknownst to the killer, it actually would not have been relevant. Gumshoe says that even though he knows how people will react, the public needs to learn the truth.
* In one of ''Franchise/TheKingOfFighters'' manga, [[spoiler: Kyo Kusanagi]] defies SmoochOfVictory when [[spoiler: he stops his just-released-from-a-DeathTrap girlfriend Yuki from kissing him, because he believes that [[ItsNotYouItsMe it's his fault she was kidnapped]] [[BreakTheCutie and emotionally broken]].]]
* ''Anime/GirlsUndPanzer'':
** Kay defies CurbStompBattle in the match between Saunders and Oarai. She chooses not to come at them with all their tanks despite outnumbering them two to one, because she believes it would be unfair, after hearing that one of her subordinates was [[spoiler:eavesdropping on Oarai's radio transmissions]] without her knowledge or approval.
** In "Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu", DreamingOfAWhiteChristmas gets defied; because Oarai and all other schools are on ships, they can go anywhere for the colder months. As such, they end up just off the coast of Australia, where it's warm enough to wear bikinis and swimwear, much to Saori's chagrin, as she thinks a white Christmas is more romantic.
* ''Anime/GaoGaiGar'' defies DestructiveSavior early on by introducing the Dividing Driver as early as Episode 3. It creates a safe battlefield in any area by shifting the rest of the matter out of the way temporarily.
* ''Manga/MonthlyGirlsNozakiKun'' defies FakeRelationship in one issue. Mikoshiba explains to Sakura that he needs a fake girlfriend in order to ward off a suitor. Both of them are very familiar with romance stories, and thus independently realize that the flow of the conversation will lead to them fake-dating (either by Sakura offering or Mikoshiba asking), which neither of them want to do, so they both trail off...[[HypocriticalHumor and get offended that the other didn't offer/ask]]. Mikoshiba winds up bringing Seo, who is more or less convincing.
* In a episode of ''Manga/HozukisCoolheadedness'', King Enma try to set-up various romantic situations between Hozuki and Maki by creating [[ContrivedCoincidence Contrived Coincidences]] with the help of the gods. [[CelibateHero Hozuki]] successively defies each and every one of them. When he make it so that [[FateDrivesUsTogether they so happen to run into each other]] while both in the human world, he keep his usual [[MarriedToTheJob stricly professional]] attitude and stay focused on what he was doing. When she happen to feel dizzy from hunger and nearly collapse on him, before [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes a bug]] appear to scare her so that she jump at him, he simply suggest that she get inside a café to rest. And when she is about to [[LiterallyFallingInLove literally fall]] right into his arms from a stair, instead of catching her, he use one hand to deflect her fall so that she safely land sitting on the ground.

* ''ComicBook/{{Watchmen}}'' has [[spoiler:Ozymandias deliver a typical BreakingSpeech to the heroes 35 minutes ''after'' he'd already completed his EvilPlan. He's not a moron.]]

* In ''WesternAnimation/BobsBurgers'' episode "The Equestranauts", Bob Belcher defies AllForNothing. When Tina's favorite horse doll is stolen, Bob goes undercover at a convention as a fan of the show the doll is from to get it back. After being caught and almost given an embarrassing tattoo, while getting a small part of it on his rear, he gets the doll back. Tina decides she's too old to play with dolls and puts it away. Not pleased with her decision after everything he went through, Bob [[TranquilFury quietly]], [[SuddenlyShouting then shouting]], orders Tina to continue playing with it, which she does. The same episode also defies OnlySmartPeopleMayPass when the man who stole the doll places it in his room's safe as a final act of defiance and says that the code is an incredibly obscure piece of trivia of the show (Bob had to study a lot of it to infiltrate the convention). Bob [[CuttingTheKnot just calls hotel security and explains what happened, and they open the vault for him]].
