* Obnoxious Teen, a recurring character in WebVideo/Hatchetfield, was originally intended to make cameos in various installments before being revealed as one of protagonists of Theatre/NerdyPrudesMustDie, Pete Spankowski. However, when Theatre/BlackFriday would make him appear opposite a character he shared an actor with, Robert Manion, Obnoxious Teen became a separate character, played by Creator/JoeyRichter. It was then planned for Obnoxious Teen to be revealed as supporting character in Nerdy Prudes Must Die, Pete's friend Ritchie Lipschitz, but after Manion's RoleEndingMisdemeanor, the role of Pete went to Richter, making that impossible. At this point WebVideo/NightmareTime 2 established Pete and Obnoxious Teen were in two different places at the same time, so it was also impossible to fold the character back into Pete.

* In Literature/TheLordOfTheRings multiple character traits and narrative beats of the original halfling hero Bilbo of Literature/TheHobbit are carried out by Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin his Hobbit sucessors. Frodo has his adventuring age of 50, his linguistics and poetry, his sword Sting (though Sam also wields it) and of course like Bilbo wields and gets changed by the Ring. Sam has his love of gardening, flowers and fireworks as well as echoing Bilbo taking on the giant spiders in Mirkwood with his own assault on great spider Shelob. Merry carries out Bilbo's role as a dear ally to a great king (Thorin - Théoden) and being by said king's side as he dies from his wounds from battle, while also like Bilbo aiding in the defeat of a great evil (Smaug - Witchking). Pippin has Bilbo's important Took heritage and especially Bilbo's inital clumsy and comical foolishness and "dead weight" qualites that annoy his companions, before coming into his own as a warrior.

** A generally accepted theory among scholarship is that Pan, a god of nature and pastoral elements, had the epithet of "Hermes", meaning "Standing Stones", after a series of sacred road markers that dotted Ancient Greece. Hermes was eventually split off into his own god through unclear means, and he and and Pan are distinct (with Hermes being credited as Pan's father in some myths). Even before that, Pan himself may be an offshoot of a Proto-Indo-European deity "Péh₂usōn" that also gave us the Hindu psychopomp Pushan.

* Myth/ArthurianLegend: For an object example, this explains the ExcaliburInTheStone issue. Over time, two legends about King Arthur's sword developed: one version said that he pulled it from a stone, while another claimed that he got it from the TheLadyOfTheLake. In Literature/LeMorteDArthur, Malory decided to include both legends, claiming that he pulled an unnamed sword from the stone and then got Excalibur from the Lady. Modern retellings will sometimes call the Sword in the Stone "Caliburn," which is the same name as "Excalibur," but in Latin instead of French.
** TheLadyOfTheLake wound up having enough contradictory characterizations that Malory included two: an unnamed one who gave Excalibur to Arthur and was killed by Sir Balin, and then Nimue, described as "the chief lady of the lake." The idea of the Lady being some sort of legacy title is fairly common in modern depictions; often the first is named Vivien and the latter Nimue, which, as with Caliburn/Excalibur, are variants of the same name.

* In a supplemental book to the Rev. W. Awdry's Literature/TheRailwaySeries, Henry the green engine is implied to be two separate engines before and after his crash and subsequent rebuild at Crewe, owing to technical discrepancies over the feasability feasibility of this rebuild.

** The most interesting case is that of Richard of Gloucester, King Theatre/RichardIII. At least four characters -- Ned Stark, Stannis Baratheon, Tyrion Lannister and Theon Greyjoy have aspects dealing with his life and legend. Ned Stark shares Gloucester's popularity in Northern England. Stannis has his NoSocialSkills among the English nobility, stemming from his rigid sense of duty and justice, as well as his gifts as a military commander. Tyrion Lannister is essentially a tribute to the rhetorical splendor of Shakespeare's Richard III, complete with disability and DeadpanSnarker Angst, he's eventually framed for the death of his nephew (like some historians believe of Richard himself) and becomes so notorious that a play is made of his life in Braavos which does for him what Shakespeare did for his counterpart. Theon Greyjoy's reputation as the killer of the young Stark Princes directly echoes the "Princes of the Tower" legend, with Theon subsequently tortured into becoming a disabled freak with a limp called, "Reek" get it Rick, as in Richard!

* WesternAnimation/Castlevania: Due to the show runners (particularly Creator/WarrenEllis)’s disdain for poor Grant, his position in the story gets divvied up and given to original characters in his absence. Greta fulfils his role as the fourth hero who befriends the heroes in battle and gets a happy ending while other ally Zamfir gets his use of daggers and rogue appearance. Not to mention, Trevor mentions meeting a “Pirate of the Roads” so Grant himself does technically really exist as well, albeit as TheGhost.

Each of them embodies a different style of depiction of the Devil: Asmodeus is the BigRedDevil, Beelzebub is the GruesomeGoat, etc.
