If a character has freaky, cool, or otherwise unusual hair colors, their eyes are liable to match. "Unusual", of course, needs to be taken with a grain of salt when it comes to AnimeHair. Comic books and western animation are also likely to display this trope.

Some series use this to make a character stand out as being "weird" or "different", especially if it's an uncommon color. Others use this for their entire cast.

"different". MagicGenetics may mark someone as having occult or supernatural ties by tying hair and eye color together. ElementalPowers may go as far as marking a character's appearance to better associate them with a specific element, and ColorCodedCharacters will extend the themed color from the outfit to the character's physical appearance.

Removing General Examples

* Some hazel eyes look fairly reddish, so it is possible to have a red-eyed redhead.
* Amber eyes are a variation of brown eyes for which a yellowish tint is visible. Coupled with blonde hair, it is thus possible to have yellow hair matched with yellow-ish eyes.
* Brown is the most common eye color, and the most common hair color is brown. Thus, the vast majority of people have some variation of brown eyes and brown hair. Of course, both eyes and hair are often so dark brown that they appear to be black, making "black" hair and "black" eyes possibly the most common combination.
* This trope can be played straight with grey-eyed people when they get old.
** Some shades of brown hair appear grey-ish, to which this could also apply.
* Raven hair often reveals bluish undertones when exposed to certain lighting, which, if combined with blue eyes, would satisfy this trope.
* Modern dyes and colored contacts allow invoking this trope for aesthetic reasons.

* Since this applies near universally in the source material, Fanfic/ResonanceDays depicts it as a common trait of humans, with Kyoko, Mami, and Oktavia all having matching hair and eyes. In fact, when Kyoko meets Charlotte, who has pink hair and blue eyes, she thinks it's kinda weird. .
