** This eventually got downplayed in the last 2-3 seasons as the show realised that McCoy and Captain Van Buren made a good team and it was pretty easy to come up with episodes where the two had to deal with something that's above the main team's paygrade.

** After Jack Harkness left the TARDIS and subsequently joined Series/{{Torchwood}}, he made return appearances in the third and fourth series' season finales. Most recently [[spoiler:Jack appeared in the 2020 episode ''Fugitive of the Judoon'', a full fifteen years after his character ceased to be a full-time companion]]. Similarly, both Martha and Rose returned for the series 4 finale (along with Martha making prior guest appearances in both ''Doctor Who'' and ''Series/{{Torchwood}}'') after officially "leaving" their roles of companion.

** Creator/RogerDelgado's incarnation of the Master turned up in every single serial of his debut season (Season 8), from "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS8E1TerrorOfTheAutons Terror of the Autons]]" to "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS8E5TheDaemons The Dæmons]]". After this, the production team of Creator/BarryLetts and Creator/TerranceDicks felt that he had been overused, and having the Master turn up in ''every'' story spoilt the surprise effect of him turning up. Thereafter, they scaled back his appearances to twice in Season 9 and once in Season 10. Delgado now became concerned that while officially a guest star, many casting directors still considered him a regular cast member of ''Doctor Who'' and therefore unavailable for other work, even though he was only getting paid for one or two stories a season. So Delgado requested that he be written out altogether, but his untimely death in a car crash in Turkey meant that farewell story never happened, and instead the character of the Master just quietly disappeared for a few years.
** UNIT regular characters Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Captain Yates and Sergeant Benton were reduced to appearing once or twice during Seasons 9-13, having been almost ever-present in Seasons 7 and 8 when the Doctor was exiled on Earth and worked with UNIT in every story.
** After the second K-9 was written out of ''Series/DoctorWho'' in "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS18E5WarriorsGate Warriors' Gate]]", various models of K-9 (although this is played down to the point that non-fans probably don't realise that in-canon there is more than one version of the character) have intermittently appeared in different parts of the franchise, including a period as a regular character in ''Series/TheSarahJaneAdventures'', and ''Series/{{K9}}'', a short-lived Australian series with little connection to the rest of the franchise due to rights issues.

** A similar thing happened to Creator/RogerDelgado's incarnation of the Master. In his first season of ''Doctor Who'', the character turned up in every single serial, from [[Recap/DoctorWhoS8E1TerrorOfTheAutons "Terror of the Autons"]] to [[Recap/DoctorWhoS8E5TheDaemons "The Dæmons"]]. Then, Delgado, while enjoying the show, became concerned that while officially a guest star, many casting directors considered him a ''de facto'' regular cast member of ''Doctor Who'' and therefore unavailable for other work. So in the next season dramatically scaled back his appearances, with an eye to making a splashy departure the following season. Due to his untimely death in Turkey, the character was quietly retired for a time.
** This also occurred with the gradual writing out of the UNIT characters in the transition from the "Earth Exile" period of the Letts/Dicks/Pertwee era to the Hinchcliffe/Holmes/Baker era. The stories set in historical or non-Earth/future settings gradually came to outnumber the contemporary Earth stories, and the appearances of the UNIT characters became increasingly perfunctory, until "The Seeds of Doom" became the first contemporary Earth story with no established characters reappearing. In the years since, UNIT has continued to exist in the background and still crosses paths with the Doctor occasionally, and the Brigadier himself reappeared several times over the years.
