The following bands are often called Christian metal and even have a few metal songs, are very much not metal. Because Christian rock stations play various harder forms of rock almost exclusively, it's very easy to mistake other forms of Christian rock music with Christian metal:

* Kutless: Straight-up AlternativeRock.
* Flyleaf: Straightforward PostGrunge, although they admittedly have some noticeable alt-metal elements.
* Music/{{Skillet}}: They ventured into metal later (most would say around ''Collide''), but the first two-thirds or so of their catalog is about half {{Grunge}} (their first few albums) and half Industrial/Alternative Rock. Because of this, they are generally considered to be just rock.
* Red: Hard PostGrunge.
* 12 Stones: HardRock and AlternativeRock.

* ThousandFootKrutch: They are often considered a Christian metal band because of their use of screaming and drumming techniques, and while they do have some songs that are undeniably metal, most of their music has more in common with HardRock, AlternativeRock, and PostGrunge (though they have flirted with NuMetal).
* Pillar: Similar to the case above.

'''Christian Metal''' is a particularly controversial offshoot of ChristianRock which began in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and has gradually gained popularity since. Basically, any HeavyMetal band with UsefulNotes/{{Christian|ity}}-based lyrics or Christian members can be categorized as this. American bands such as Resurrection Band and Petra are usually credited with pioneering the genre, although Stryper were arguably the first Christian Metal band to garner mainstream attention. Other bands, such as Tourniquet and Australia's Mortification, incorporated a heavier style and have become staples in the underground Metal scene. At the TurnOfTheMillennium, RapMetal band P.O.D. achieved ranks in the Billboard 200 and frequently appeared on Creator/{{MTV}} alongside their secular peers. Since P.O.D.'s success, Christian bands such as Music/{{Underoath}}, Music/NormaJean and Music/TheDevilWearsPrada have gained enormous popularity in the burgeoning {{Metalcore}} scene.

Christian Metal has received criticism from both Christian and secular audiences, being perceived as an oxymoron due to traditional Metal's anti-establishment, anti-religious and hedonistic sentiments. However, this has not prevented the genre from enjoying varying degrees of underground and mainstream success since its formation in the late 70's.
