** VideoGame/BaldursGate3 zigzags this trope. Players have the option of creating a custom protagonist or selecting one of seven Origin Characters with a set backstory and quests relating to them. Custom characters and The Dark Urge are fully customizable, choosing among races (some including Subraces like wood elves or high elves), classes, as many as four body types (male, female, plus a taller and more muscled version of each that doesn't affect gameplay). Each class then gains a subclass somewhere in the its first three levels that further differentiates it both thematically and mechanically. There's also an extensive cosmetic creator...that's only usable by custom characters, The Dark Urge, and hirelings. The remaining six Origin characters, and the four recruitable party members who can't be the main character all have a completely fixed appearance, not allowed to change to so much as a hairdo. Origin characters are free to change their class once Withers has unlocked respeccing, but Shadowheart, Wyll, and Gale's personal quests will still treat them as their default classes for storyline reasons.

** Flora picks an elf Druid with a flower crown.
** Layla/Aisha decides to be a water Genasi monk with ombre dreadlocks like the ocean.
** Stella enters the game just to prove she can create a character much cooler than the rest and crafts an angel with sun powers, a halo, and feathery wings.
** Roxy brings pizza and reveals she used to play [=DnD=] and her character was a half-elf ForestRanger with animal companions -- which Bloom was about to pick for herself. Also, Roxy's ranger is an outcast and the princess of a lost kingdom fated to save it. Now having very similar backstories isn't as funny, huh?
** At last, Bloom selects a half-elf Eldritch knight with her bunny Kiko as her sidekick.
** As the Game Master, Tecna plays all the non-playable characters, but the other Winx teasingly pressure her to tell them her chosen PlayerCharacter -- a gnome artificer with robots to use in combat.

* VideoGame/BaldursGate, being based on TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons has always had a significant amount of this, though the depth depends on the game.
** The first two games have the player build a character in second edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, choosing a race, class, stats, and setting the colors of skin, hair, and clothing. The character also selects a portrait from one of several dozen included. Some versions of the game (or those using a GameMod) can add new portraits to choose from.

* TabletopGame/Numenera by UsefulNotes/D20System developer Monte Cook uses a three-stage system. You pick a character class (the system uses the FighterMageThief archetype specifically), then descriptors (e.g. "clever, tough, strong-willed, or mystical"), then a build focus.
