* Downplayed in ''Manga/JojosBizarreAdventureVentoAureo'', as while the protagonists are NeighborhoodFriendlyGangsters, they are still criminals by law. Though Bruno Bucciarati manages to be a proper father figure many of the characters needed. In one example,, Narancia Ghirga had his mother die from an eye infection, grew up with a neglectful father, and was framed for a break in by his FalseFriend. The moment he meet Fugo and Buccarati, they covered for his desperate stealing from their frequent restaurant, provided him lunch, and paid for his eye treatment. Interestingly Bucciarati didn't want Narancia to become a gangster and told him to go back to a normal life. But because the two were the first genuinely kind people in his life, Narancia applied to Passione and got assigned to Bucciarati's team.

* ''WesternAnimation/SheRaAndThePrincessesOfPower'': This becomes one of the main reasons for Entrapta's defection to the Horde (alongside her interest in their tech), when she was on the side good she was treated with little respect by her fellow princesses and was often an outcast who received poor treatment with a few exceptions such as Bow. On the Horde she found true friends in Scorpia and Catra for once and eventually got on Hordak's good graces and bonded over their self-esteem issues, in addition to getting a high ranking position that let her tamper with all the technology she wanted. When she returns to the Rebellion's side, it is made clear that in spite of her being good and trying to help the other princesses still treat her rather badly for her quirks and personality.

* ''Film/{{Shoplifters}}'': A very poor family shoplifts to make ends meet. Osamu and Nobuyo are the father and mother figures, however "their" kids, Shota and Yuri, were actually abducted because their biological families were abusive to them. The grandmother figure Hatsue has no relation to any of them and stays with them because she has no one else to turn to. Aki is the daughter of Hatsue's husband and his second wife and stays with the found family because she can't cope with the high expectations her parents have for her. In the end, the family's crimes catch up to them and they're separated, with Hatsue dying, Nobuyo going to jail and the kids going back to their abusive families, which the film implies is a worse fate than if they stayed with their criminal found family.

A character falls in with a group generally regarded with ill-repute, be it gangsters, monsters, or the literal hordes of hell. However, their lives before this were so terrible that such a situation is an unambiguous step ''up''.

Most often the "bad guys" are more sympathetic to the character's plight than a regular person would be, or their situation is such that they genuinely fit in better with this darker group than they ever did with normal society.

This can be played for laughs or for drama. When PlayedForLaughs or lightheartedness, a starker contrast between the "bad" guys being decent people vs where the character came from can be seen. Often, despite their bad reputation, they're absurdly kind and are only considered 'bad' for something outside their control, such as a frightening appearance.

When PlayedForDrama, things take a darker turn as the "bad" guys are likely every bit as evil and horrible as their reputations suggest... and they're ''still'' an improvement over where the character was previously. Characters in this situation are prone to be very loyal [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe due to the kindness they've been offered]], even if it means becoming an outright villain. Odds on an eventual HeelFaceTurn are fifty-fifty.

** As a child, Tomura Shigaraki grew up in a strict home, with [[spoiler:a father who would punish him by forcing him to sit outside until he behaved himself, a mother and grandparents who offered only platitudes, and a sister as likely to sell him out as console him]]. When Tomura's quirk to cause objects he touches to decay awakened, it was after [[spoiler:his father's emotional abuse turned physical and resulted in Tomura massacring most of his family by accident, then ''deliberately'' killing his father when he attacked Tomura in an attempt to defend himself]]. It was soon after this, and after being left alone due to BystanderSyndrome, that he fell into the clutches of GreaterScopeVillain All For One, who raised him from that day forward, becoming his mentor, encouraging his more destructive tendencies, and teaching him how to achieve his goal of upending Hero Society. All For One is perhaps the one thing in the world Shigaraki ''doesn't'' hate with a passion.
** La Brava became enamored with the self-proclaimed villain Gentle Criminal after seeing the videos he posted of himself committing crimes, lending her hacker skills to his cause to become a name worthy of the history books. Prior to this, she had been a {{Hikkikomori}} following mockery from her first love and [[spoiler:had even been contemplating suicide]]. Gentle's presence in her life gives her cause to go on, despite doing so making La Brava herself an accomplice to his crimes,.
* ''Manga/NegativeYuushaToMaougunKanbu'': Rene is the heroine raised to fight the demon lord. However, she doesn't actually ''want'' to fight and responds to demon army leader Hyudooru's threats of death with ''relief''. The whole situation makes Hyudooru change gears, offer her a place in his castle as his assistant studying magic, and his soldiers, once they hear about the situation, welcome Rene with open arms.
* ''Manga/TakeoChanBukkairoku'': Takeo is BornUnlucky to the degree that even the hundred yokai who inhabit the home she's given to live in can't shock her. However, the negative energy that's built up in her because of this is so delicious to those same yokai that they make a deal to make her cheerful, the only thing that ''can'' shock Takeo enough to release her negative energy, for as long as she can provide it and, in the process, figure out how to alleviate the curse that causes her abysmal luck.
* ''Anime/{{Trigun}}'': Legato Bluesummers didn't even have a ''name'' before he met BigBad Knives, to say nothing of how horrifically badly he was treated in his former life. Knives might not view him as much better than any other human, but there's no doubt Legato is far happier being his [[TheDragon Dragon.]]
* ''Manga/WelcomeToDemonSchoolIrumaKun'': The story starts with fourteen year-old Iruma being brought to a world of demons because his deadbeat parents sold ''his'' soul to the devil. Fortunately for Iruma, all said devil wants is to have a grandchild of his own to dote on. Despite all the dangers inherent in being a human being in a world of demons, such as the high likelihood he'd become demon-chow if he were found out, Iruma's life has taken a substantial upturn, as he has friends and attends school when, in the human world, he had to work odd jobs pretty much since he could walk to support himself.
* ''Manga/YokaiAmeOnnaNiYoruKamigakushi'' (''Spirited Away by the Youkai Rain Woman'') starts with a rain youkai encountering a little boy and says if he doesn't stop crying, she'll take him away to become her child. She's surprised that he agrees immediately, then learns exactly what the kid's parents are doing to him, so she takes him in (after murdering his parents, fortunately offscreen) and becomes a devoted mother to the child, who goes on to [[spoiler: become a yokai in his own right called a Sunshine Boy]].

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* ''Fanfic/DungeonKeeperAmi'': As Jared says in "Vampire Solution", his status has gone from being a common adventurer, to the high position of [[spoiler:working under royalty]], due to being hired by someone most regard as an EvilOverlord:
--> Jered could sympathise with the feeling. He hadn't properly internalised yet that he was now working directly underneath [[spoiler:an empress]]. Him!

All of the Beast's servant treat her respectfully and are happy to have her around. In ''[[Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol2 Vol. 2]]'', it's shown that he found his real father, but his real bonds are with Yondu, who in the end raised him as his son.
* ''Film/TheManFromFromColorado'': When Del realises that his friend Owen has gone completely insane, he quits his job as marshal and joins the outlaws he had been previously trying to capture, because the outlaws are the only force providing any opposition to Owen, and he knows that most of them are decent men who have been forced into banditry by Owen's reign of terror.

[[folder: Tabletop Games]]
* ''TabletopGame/{{Warhammer}}'': Subverted with beastmen. People whose mutation give them animal traits are soon driven out from their native homes, and often find refuge in beastmen hordes. However, they form the absolute dregs of beastman society (as they have a MightMakesRight mentality and use horns as an indicator of power). They can at best make themselves useful to beastmen by selling out their former neighbors.

[[folder:Video Games]]
* ''VideoGame/EnsembleStars'': Akatsuki were antagonists during the war and were involved in quite a few morally questionable acts that hurt many other people, so Keito feels guilty for bringing Kuro into all of that as a member. However, Kuro entirely disagrees and is actually grateful he was brought in, as before he joined Yumenosaki he was an aimless thug who hated his life and himself. He regrets his actions in Akatsuki, but they weren't worse than anything he was doing before, and being in Akatsuki introduced him to new friends and a new purpose he never would have otherwise been able to find.

* In ''WebOriginal/BrigScarletFlamingo'', Joseph Avery is desperately unhappy and lonely both in his hometown and later at the orphanage (other children bully him, and as no adult looks out for him or gives him any advice, his only solution is to beat them up at the slightest provocation). He eventually runs away and joins a pirate crew, finding happiness and fulfillment, and the pirate captain becomes his ParentalSubstitute.
* ''WebAnimation/MortyKombat'': Upon being warped to Outworld, Morty finds himself hanging out with Raiden and Jax before being approached by Shao Kahn with the request to join the bad guys. At first, Morty refuses due to considering Raiden and Jax his friends, but he is quick to change his mind after he remembers how they done show him any respect even when he loses his death fights. Upon [[FaceHeelTurn joining the villains]], Morty finds himself winning more fights, being treated with more respect, and even usurping Shang Tsung as Shao Kahn's [[TheDragon right-hand man]] after [[KlingonPromotion beating Shang in a fight]]. He does go back to good after Shao Kahn forces him to fight Sonya though.
