In fictionland and in RealLife, bats are frightful creatures, and in cultures across the world they are linked to darkness and the domain of night. A [[Main/{{TheSwarm}} swarm]] of bats may live in dark places untouched by unsuspecting victims, until one appears in their way.

But what if ''someone'' calls upon them as a type of attack?

In fictionland, dark-aligned characters will draw on the powers of darkness to [[Main/{{CastingAShadow}} cast shadow attacks]], control terrible TendrilsOfDarkness, and even [[Main/{{ShadowWalker}} teleport through shadows]]. In addition, they may invoke a swarm of bats as a manifestation of their dark powers.

Simple forms of this casting involves the characters swishing their capes and releasing the swarm at their opponent. A more imposing form consists in the character creating and/or controlling a large swarm with their powers.

The trope may appear in the following users:

# Vampires: Due to OurVampiresAreDifferent, they possess this ability either due to them becoming a bat, or [[Main/{{DealWithTheDevil}} through a pact with demonic forces]].
## A subtype of this one involves the character [[OneToMillionToOne shapeshifting into a swarm]] of bats to [[Main/{{TravelTransformation}} teleport away]], and attacking their enemies while still in this form.
# Other darkness users: drawing on the above description, the character may cast a swarm of bats as a manifestation of their dark powers.
# Artificially: Excluding examples where there is magic or dark powers involved, a swarm of bats may be weaponized against people by the use of a device.
# The swarm ''is'' the character, as a variation on TheWormThatWalks.

This is not to be confused for BatPeople or {{Animorphism}}, wherein a person is bat-like creature or turns into a bat, but they can serve as explanation why the character has such powers in the first place.

The archetype of TheBeastmaster may also manipulate bats, but they usually commune with ''extant'' animals in nature, and do not conjure them. The bats may also be utilized by TheMinionMaster.

Subtrope to TheSwarm, and to BatOutOfHell (type 1), where the bats in question may cause a BatScare in unsuspecting victims.

Contrast SwarmOfRats, ScaryStingingSwarm, SpiderSwarm, and AntAssault.

During the fight, Dracula floats around the screen wrapped in his cape, stops at certain points and opens his cape to release bats at Donald.
* ''VideoGame/{{Skylanders}}'': Bat Spin is able to command bats at will, either by firing them like projectiles or forming a defense circle around her. In-universe, she is a member of the "Undead" faction/element, which includes ghosts, vampires and other classes of undead, but she is more of a FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire than the common occurrence of the trope.
* ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate'': During Dracula's first battle phase, he occasionally turns into a swarm of bats that swoops across the stage in an attempt to hit the player.
* In ''[[VideoGame/{{Warcraft}} Warcraft 3]]'', the Dread Lord is a vampiric HeroUnit of the Undead. One of his abilities is "Carrion Swarm", which unleashes a swarm of bats to deal damage and [[LifeDrain restore his own health by a percentage of the damage done]]. Also, Dreadlords are heavily associated with vampires in the setting.
** Mal'Ganis gets an homage to that ability in ''VideoGame/HeroesOfTheStorm'' (being the Dreadlord representative) with his Plague Bats talent, which causes Necrotic Embrace to fire a similar wave of bats when used.

* ''WesternAnimation/JusticeLeague'': When the Batcave is invaded by the Thanagarian army in "Starcrossed", Batman fights back by hurling a batarang at his foes. Though the aliens scoff at the hero's projectiles, they fail to realize that the weapons are actually emiting an acoustic signal, which directs all the bats in the cave to attack them.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheLoudHouse'': Downplayed. Lucy Loud, the goth sister of the family, has a pet bat named Fangs, whose friends (other bats) sometimes visit the house. So sometimes, Lucy will sic Fangs and his friends on enemies, who will fly in the person's face.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{WITCH}}'': The Tracker has a hole on his chest, which he can open during combat to unleash a swarm of bats at his enemies.
