Primarily in comedies, if you want show that a person's really, really awful at impressions? Simply have him do one or more of the following:

* Either say whom he's impersonating afterwards (Dear Belgium, how many times has Michael Scott done this?)
* Just have them say "I'm [celebrity's name]" in a voice that doesn't sound remotely like that celebrity. Or sometimes, this trope is followed with LOOK! I'M SO AND SO DURR DUR DURR
* Do the voice properly, but misquote him. BADLY. Even if another character corrects him, make sure the impressionist continues to screw up.

If it's done badly on purpose, like the way Joel McHale sometimes does it, it doesn't count. If the impressionist ASSUMES he's dead-on accurate, and they suck royally, then that's what this trope's all about.

Primarily in comedies, if you want show that Impressions have been a person's really, really awful at impressions? staple of comedy for quite a long time (see Eddie Izzard) Ergo, when one of your characters is an (often bad by his own right) comedian, impressions tend to crop up. If your character is a bad comedian, though, his impression is likely to suck balls. Want to point this out to the audience? Couldn't be easier. Simply have him do one or more of the following:

* Either say whom he's impersonating afterwards (Dear Belgium, how many times has Michael Scott done this?)
* Just have
Having them say "I'm [celebrity's name]" in a voice that doesn't who they're impersonating, either before or after they do so.
* Have them
sound remotely nothing like that celebrity. Or sometimes, the guy. When a male comedian impersonates a female (or vice versa), this trope can be chalked up to LarynxDissonance voicebox difficulties.
* Butchering the impersonatee's accent. Giving a Cockney celebrity a Scottish accent in your impersonation
is followed with LOOK! I'M SO AND SO DURR DUR DURR
firmly this trope. Exaggerating for comedic effect (making the Cockney celebrity speak in full rhyming slang while, normally, he or she just pronounces words in a decidedly Cockney way) is not.
* Do Doing the voice properly, but misquote him. BADLY.misquoting the celebrity in question.]] Badly. Even if another character corrects him, make sure the impressionist continues to screw up.

If a comedian does this intentionally, it's done badly on purpose, like not this trope. Neither is it if he lampshades the way Joel McHale sometimes does it, it fact that his impressions are terrible and otherwise doesn't count. If the impressionist ASSUMES he's dead-on accurate, and they suck royally, then that's what this trope's all about.make them a big part of his routine. See StylisticSuck Stylistic Suck.
