Asthma is a convenient condition for fiction. It's both extremely dangerous and yet not (in most cases, anyway) an impediment to living a relatively normal life. It also often has [[BeautyIsNeverTarnished no obvious physical effects except making the sufferer wheeze and struggle for breath]], which helps them to appear DelicateAndSickly (often a subtrope).
Expect the need for an inhaler to wax and wane regarding on what's most convenient for the plot. There will usually be no warning sign that an asthma attack is about to come on (which is not the case in real life). Often, characters will badly need their inhaler at the moment that it's most inconvenient, and will have to brave going back to the source of the danger to save their own lives (or someone else will have to do it for them). There are also usually no medications to combat asthma except inhalers in fictional worlds.
It may overlap with NerdyInhaler if the character in question is either very intelligent (which is also possible, because it means disabling the group's main source of intellectual support) or weak, or some combination of both. Especially in newer media, this is not required.
The asthma version of PlotAllergy, which produces similar symptoms but from a more obvious cause. A sister trope to PlotInducedIllness.
