Compare RedHeadedStepchild, which historically had some relation to this trope as in mixed Italian-Irish families in the late 19th century the red-headed child would be obviously not related to one of the parents, which could lead to this, and ChocolateBaby, where the lack of physical resemblance to at least one parent is the result of infidelity. Related to FosterKid, whose main source of drama comes from being separated from their birth family.

* ''Fanfic/TheSimpsonsTeamLASH'': In one scene, [[WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons Mr. Burns]] reveals, in front of his relatives, that his manor, nuclear power plant, and the lion’s share of his fortune will be given to [[FanCreatedOffspring his adoptive daughter, Anastasia Burns]], when he dies. Several members of the Burns family, embittered over being passed over in Mr. Burns’ inheritance in favor of Anastasia, mock and insult her for being adopted. Particular things they lay into her for are looking nothing like the rest of the Burns family and her birth family being unknown lower- or middle-class people rather than an Old Money family.

* ''Series/AllMyChildren'''s Kendall Hart and ''Series/GeneralHospital'''s Carly Benson both regarded their adoptive parents/families as "less" because they weren't biologically related. ''AMC'''s Maria also had to contend with her strict Catholic parents objections to her and husband's plans to adopt once she realized she was infertile.

* When ''Series/DayOfOurLives''' villain Stefano blasts his adopted daughter Kristen for her stupid actions, he caps off his rant by declaring that he's glad that she isn't his biological child. Kristen, for all her own scheming and conniving ways, is genuinely devastated to hear him say this.

* ''Series/OneLifeToLive''. When feebly trying to explain to her husband Carlo why she lied to him about being pregnant, Alex tries to pacify him by telling him that she's arranged for them to adopt a baby. He's enraged at her plans to try and pass off an unknown child as his and disgusted at the idea of raising a child that isn't--"I wanted a son from ''my'' loins!"

* In ''VideoGame/MortalKombat1'', Tomas Vrbada, better known as Smoke, is an adopted son of the Lin Kuei grandmaster, raised alongside the grandmaster's own sons, Bi-Han and Kuai Liang -- Sub-Zero and Scorpion, respectively. When Bi-Han starts considering the idea of transforming the Lin Kuei into an independent nation, both Tomas and Kuai Liang balk at the idea. Bi-Han coldly dismisses Tomas's concerns, snapping back that he isn't a "real" Lin Kuei because he was adopted. Some time after, though, Kuai Liang assures Tomas that at least he still considers him a brother, the two remaining firm allies in the face of Bi-Han's FaceHeelTurn.
