* ''FanFic/CindersAndAshesTheChroniclesOfKamenRiderDante'' adds several gaps of time between episodes of ''Anime/ReCreators'' for original plots to flesh out both the characters and the narrative. While this is noticeable in the first third, the middle portion has a {{justification}} given that there's a few {{time skip}}s in the anime and, as such, acts more akin to [[AdaptationExpansion expanding upon what happened during those time skips]]... barring the obvious changes.
* The events of ''Anime/DragonBallZResurrectionF'', from Freeza's resurrection to his invasion of Earth, took course over six months. In ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11161847/1/The-Vicious-Gods-Wrath The Vicious Gods Wrath]]'', these events span from Age 776 (stated to before Gohan and Videl's wedding) to Age 779.

* ''Film/TheMartian'' changes the timeframe before the abort evacuation for no readily apparent reason. In the book, the Ares III crew has to abort and evacuate on Sol 6. In the movie, they get to stay until Sol 18. To the movie's credit, it adjusts most things as a result: in the book, food supplies are sent for 50 days as a redundancy; in the movie, it's 61 days, for example.

* The [[DividedForAdaptation part of]] ''Literature/{{Dune}}'' that was adapted into ''Film/DunePartTwo'' takes place over a few years -- long enough for [[spoiler:Paul's younger sister to be born and grow into a precocious toddler, and for Paul and Chani to have a baby son]]. The film takes place over a few months, and drops those plot points.

* ''Film/TheLordOfTheRings'': In the books, it's about sixteen and a half years from Bilbo's farewell party to Gandalf's visit where the Ring-inscription is revealed, and a few more months before Frodo sets out on the Ring-quest. On screen, ''Film/TheLordOfTheRingsTheFellowshipOfTheRing'' seems to condense the first interval to exactly as long as it takes Gandalf to make the trip Minas Tirith and back, a few weeks or months, and Frodo sets out the next day. This results in a minor AdaptationInducedPlotHole as reuniting with Bilbo in Rivendell shows him to have started aging again due to separation from the One Ring, but the book clarified that a long time had passed while the movie his hair goes completely white after what seems to be a few weeks.

It is more common for the timespan to be shorter than it is to be longer. Written media is adapted to audiovisual media than the other way around, and since a book usually takes more time to read it can cover more content. Thanks to ShowDontTell, a book can specify "time passes" without any issue, but a film would likely not bother with this. Live-action adaptations may shorten a timespan to avoid issues like visible aging or the passing of seasons.

* ''Film/HarryPotterAndThePhilosophersStone'' erases the month that elapses between Harry's visit to Diagon Alley and his trip to Hogwarts. This becomes a problem if you want to reconcile how the events play out in the film with their canon dates. Namely, the visit to Diagon Alley is tied to Harry's birthday, which is at the end of July, while Hogwarts term is supposed to start at the beginning of September. The movie deals with by just not mentioning the date of either event. When Harry reads about the Gringotts robbery in the book, he notes that the date of the robbery was his birthday, but in the film, he instead notes that the vault mentioned is the same one that he visited with Hagrid.
