* ToKnowHimIMustBecomeHim: It's said that in Thud, an asymmetric board game where dwarf and troll pieces use very different rules, skilled dwarf play requires a mindset that comes very easily to dwarfs and vice-versa. The troll and dwarf players in the Thud club are shown adopting elements of one anothers' cultures to up the other half of their Thud game, like a troll wearing a specially-made dwarf helmet and drinking out of an upsized mug to get into a dwarf mindset. [[spoiler: Helmclever turns out to have been a dwarf who was a ''very'' good troll player, and was heartbroken that his beloved troll-style club was used by his bosses to enact a terrible crime.]]

* WithUsOrAgainstUs: It's mentioned that one consequence of troll-dwarf tensions being at a high point is that trolls and dwarfs in the Ankh-Morpork City Watch are being put under social pressure (by their families, their neighbours, etc.) to resign, because the Watch isn't on either side of the conflict. The narration explicitly refers to this trope by name, almost word-for-word:
--> Some people would be asking: Whose side are you on? If you're not with us, you're against us. Huh. If you're not an apple, you're a banana!
