*BreakingTheFellowship: Serves as the [[DarkestHour Darkest Hour]] of book two with the [[spoiler: reveals that Jynn is an omnimancer and Gaist is a Doppelganger]] happening at the same time, all the minor fractures and stresses that have been building up in the party finally come to a head and the Heroes of Destiny decide to go their separate ways.

*{{Foreshadowing}}: [[spoiler: In the second book Johan kills King Handor and his Paladin powers keep Handor from being raised, since anyone slain by a Paladin is automatically sanctified. Given how many other RPG tropes the series pulls from it is a little surprising that Johan's act of cold blooded murder doesn't instead cause him to fall out of favor with his god and lose his powers. Astute readers probably shouldn't be too surprise when in book three we eventually discover that rather than being a deity of good Tandos is actually been in league with [[GodOfEvil Manon]] ever since the War of Betrayal, explaining why he would still approve of Johan's actions.]]

* StarCrossedLovers: Queen Marja is obsessed with these types of romance novels. All of them end with both lovers dead, one of them usually through suicide. Leading to a BaitAndSwitch in ''Son of a Liche'' where she seems to be comtemplating suicide but turns out to be just reading out loud, [[spoiler: and when she hears of king Handor's death just shrugs and marries Johan, whom she's infatuated with. When Marja starts getting in the way of Johan's plans in ''Dragonfired'', he fakes his own death while on a quest after deliberately referencing one of those novels. Marja, rejoiced that their romance is ending just like one of her books, forces her baker to make her some poisoned teacakes. When the baker tries to refuse, Marja tells her that one of them will be consuming poison that day, and it's up to the baker which one. After Marja's death, Johan triumphantly returns to their funeral. He later admits that he did love Marja (or at least the idea of her) but couldn't allow her to interfere with his plans.]]

* ThievesGuild: In the third book it turns out the Thieves Guild got bought out by private equity, whose risk-averse cost-cutting measures mean that they don't actually steal anything anymore, leaving room for more ruthless gangsters like Benny Hookhand. The guild do still act as {{Knowledge Broker}}s though, with carefully itemized lists.
