* BirthDeathJuxtaposition: Drizzt is born, and his older brother Nalfein is killed, the night that house Do'Urden destroys house DeVir. Nalfein's death actually saves Drizzt's life, as third living sons are traditionally sacrificed.

* KlingonPromotion: The backstabbing society of the drow accepts this to a large extent, though usually they hide it behind some (often very superficial) window dressing. Subverted with Alton [=DeVir=], however: when his master is killed, he [[spoiler:takes over his job by [[KillAndReplace also taking over his identity]]]].

* KlingonPromotion: The backstabbing society of the drow accepts this to a large extent, though usually they hide it behind some (often very superficial) window dressing. This applies to individuals as well as whole families, who need to eliminate other families higher on the hirarchy in order to gain status. Subverted with Alton [=DeVir=], however: when his master is killed, he [[spoiler:takes over his job by [[KillAndReplace also taking over his identity]]]].

* SkilledButNaive: Drizzt being innocent yet powerful is a rarity among the drow. In his first grand melee, Drizzt agrees to team up with another student. Drizzt quickly learns that he is by far the most skilled competitor, but still loses since he never considered that his ally might stab him in the back. Even after he leaves Menzoberranzan, the narrative uses his FishOutOfWater nature and young naiveté for conflict.

* TookALevelInCynic: In Drizzt's first grand melee, he is defeated only because it hadn't occurred to him that the other student he allied with might stab him in the back. In his second grand melee, when only he an one other student remain, he stands out in the open and invites his adversary to finish it honorably in a fair fight. His teachers groan that he hasn't learned anything -- until the other student attempts a sneak attack and stumbles over the tripwires that Drizzt had earlier set, allowing Drizzt an easy victory.

* VillainCorner: Vierna is supposedly the nicest of Drizzt's sisters, and it is implied that absent the corrupting influences of drow she might have turned good. However, a few KickTheDog moments make it clear that she is, at best, only slightly less ChaoticEvil than the rest of her family.
