Added DiffLines:

* DoubleStandard: Natalie's inability to grasp the gendered standards of 1930s America becomes a problem when, on a hot day, she sees Moose in trunks and naturally changes into her swimsuit. Moose then has to explain to her why women are forbidden from dressing immodestly in view of the convicts.
-->'''Moose:''' "You're a girl, Natalie. And it's... you've got, you know, girl parts you have to keep covered up. It's not like home."

Added DiffLines:

* SheIsAllGrownUp: A rare sibling example when Moose is horrified to see Natalie standing totally naked for the first time in years. Last time, they were both little kids. Now she's a teenager and things have changed. "It isn't so bad from the back," he says.

* InnocentFanserviceGirl: PlayedForDrama. Natalie is autistic, has severe sensory issues with clothing, and is known to strip naked from time to time. She has some mild understanding that her family scolds her for doing this, but has no serious understanding of the social obligation of clothing. Moose tells a story of Natalie doing this at a cousin's wedding once when they were children, and then it was ''merely'' horribly embarrassing for their family. Now Natalie is a teenager with a sexually mature body, and they live on an island full of violent, sexually repressed criminals -- now this tendency of hers is ''terrifying''.

* TheCaretaker:TheCaretaker: Moose is often left responsible for looking after Natalie when their parents are at work.

* DiseaseByAnyOtherName: Natalie is severely autistic, but it's 1935. Autism won't be described until the 1940s and it won't be added to the DSM until 1980. There's some DeliberateValuesDissonance. The other Alcatraz kids ask Moose if she's "retarded", and he's angered by this, but he can't really refute it. Given the time, that may well be her literal diagnosis. Natalie's short-term teacher, Mrs. Kelly, says she's not supposed to count, rock, play with her buttons, etc. In modern parlance that would be called "suppressing stimming" and it's frowned upon. On the other hand, Mrs. Kelly also advises the family bring Natalie along on errands so she's not isolated at home, which is reasonably in keeping with modern advice.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Piper is a scheming trouble-maker, but she ends up being arguably the most empathetic toward her of all the other characters in the first book. Unlike her family, she sees her for what she is, not what she wants her to be. She's completely unfazed at the thought of sixteen-year-old Natalie having a romantic and possibly sexual relationship with a young man close to her age (even going so far as to suggest they get married), and gives her some new buttons to add to her collection on her birthday.
