Naturally, Tre doesn't take this too well, but his worries are straightened out by The Crew, a ragtag group of seven misfits who live in the mall every night. But the group's not alone, thanks to the mall's overzealous rent-a-cop team, led by Carl Weisberger, a particularly stiff and rude guard with a bt too much dedication to his job. In addition, there may very well be someone else entirely pulling all the strings behind everyone's backs...

It all starts when a timid daydreamer named Tre Listman accepts a dance date from Fillmore Jr. High's resident queen bee Lilly. When things go awry, Tre leaves mortified and runs to the Galleria Mall. After a bit too much root beer and a freak accident involving a shopping cart and a bad idea, Tre finds himself in the Galleria after closing hours... and there's no way out.

Tre Listman, 13 years old, just your average black teen boy in the eighth grade. He's not very popular, at least, not until [[AlphaBitch Lilly Everdeen]] showed up and, out of the blue, asked him to the school dance happening just before classes let out for winter break. Tre accepts, but as it turns out, [[PrankDate it's a trap to prank him]] and he leaves the dance mortified. To take his mind off of that humiliating experience, he goes shopping that night at the Westland Galleria Mall with his family, and by way of a few [[DrunkOnMalts root beers and]] [[ASimplePlan a simple plan to get to the Electronics section]], he crashes a shopping cart into a wall of the [[BrandX Straight Shot]]'s optical, knocking him out cold.

Tre awakens in the security department and meets Carl Weisberger, a night guard who's [[KnightTemplar more than a little off his rocker]] and determined to turn Tre's accident into legal charges. Before he gets the chance to, however, Tre escapes with the intent of going home. Unluckily for him, though, all of the mall's doors are locked, so he's stuck there. From there, he gets [[CrashIntoHello tackled]] by a mysterious brown-haired girl named Nora, who lives in the mall after hours with her RagtagBunchOfMisfits roommates called The Crew, who are in a ongoing war with Carl (or, as they call him, Cow) and his cronies. Tre's intrigued by this new and weird world, but at the same time he feels desperate to get out of it.

Will Tre stick with his newfound friends, or abandon them to go back to his old life?
