** Villim Disra, one of the villains of the ''Literature/HandOfThrawn'' duology, appears here as a planetary official on Shelkonwa. He uses his connections to the criminal underworld (also on display in ''Hand of Thrawn'') to assist Governor Choard in his planned secession from the Empire, only to turn around and betray him to Vader at the first opportunity to start his own rise in the Imperial ranks. Vader admits that Disra is angling to take over the governorship of Shelsa Sector, but the Emperor says that promotion will have to wait. Mara and Vader privately concur that Disra is a ''"con artist and conniver"'', who can't be trusted.

* ChessmasterSidekick: Caaldra has a vast intelligence network whose reports he scrutinizes carefully and forms alliances with mercenaries, {{Small Town Tyrant}}s, and pirate gangs across the sector to steal weapons and attack Imperial loyalists once the secession plot begins. He's almost singlehandedly responsible for the failed secession being in a position where, if not for several [[SpannerInTheWorks last-minute spanners in the works]], it would have probably succeeded despite the active efforts of one of its leaders to sabotage the plot from within.

* HaveYouToldAnyoneElse: Ominous StateSec official Vak Somoril asks Ozzel who else knows about a secret that could sink their career in one scene as part of a plot to commit murder. Unusually, Somoril isn't planning to kill Ozzel except in a worst case scenario, but plans to kill anyone else who knows the secret and is below a certain rank. Ironically, Ozzel asks Somoril if ''he's'' told anyone else while listing eveyone in the loop, but asks that question innocently and lacks the backbone to ever dream of trying to get the better of Somoril.

Deleting Five Man Band ZCE tree as per cleanup requirement.

* FiveManBand: A bit stretched, but it works:
** TheHero -- [=LaRone=], the leader;
** TheLancer -- Marcross, his foil;
** TheSmartGuy -- Quiller, the pilot and spaceship nerd;
** TheBigGuy -- Grave, the marksman and sniper;
** TheChick -- Brightwater, the scout.
