The story follows sixteen and a half year old Princess Kalima. She feels overwhelmed by her overprotective mother, but she is soon gifted a chance when the Goddess Bastet tells her that she has been chosen as her champion and must find the rest of the champions and test the wards in a prison world. Her sister and shield is also informed that she has been chosen. As the story continues, Kalima is invited to got see her friend's, Delta, sibling's naming day. Her mother decides to make a vacation of it.

There Kalima is introduced to Jinx, Nix, and Fay's twin sister Doe. After the naming ceremony, they go to the dragon caves where they are bonded with dragon. Kalima gets a purple dragon named Sakura who prefers Sora, Fay receives a young red name Ryu who is crushing on Sora, and Nix receives a blue named Tadashi. With the young dragons, the clan goes to the moon pool to meet Arella, the priestess who tends it, and her two children. They drink of the pool and face their worst fears before they are taken to the godly realm. Bastet has another talk with Kalima, this time with her sister, Erica. There Bastet gives her instructions on how to enter the prison world.

Kalima uses the instructions, after a journey that reveals her lost cousin is still alive, along with help from her friends and family to reach the prison world, but entering the world has reduced her magic stores to dangerously low levels and is knocked out. One of the people inside rescues her and brings her to their house. There she starts a romance with Kieran and a friendship with his twin sister, Seraphine. They tell her of their worries that they will never leave the place and Kieran express rage at the unfairness of it as any teenager would. At the end of the month inside of it, Bastet releases them from the world. Freya invites everyone in high command to a dinner to meet her family again. From there, Lady Astrid announces a festival to celebrate Freya's return. During the festival, Set is taken over by the goddess, Sekhmet, and Freya attacks him to give the people a chance to escape. They leave the festival to the eternal fields of Punishment where the group bands together to get Set back to normal. Princess Vanessa is constructing a spell that will free her father from Sekhmet's control, so the group strikes out against Sekhmet to give her time to complete the spell.

Kalima, thinking her mother died during the attack, petitions the council for blood feud against the goddess which they grant. Her great great great grandmother rounds up her pride and goes with Kalima to face the goddess. They journey through the greatly changed landscape until she is kidnapped by Sekhmet in another form. The goddess toys with the group before she goads Aleksandr into a poker game. She leaves after realizing she was tricked into attaching Panthera again. The gods choose their champions and the book then turns to Caterina being reunited with her father and his pack and the champions working out their new abilities.
