* HopelessSuitor: Doyle might become this for Alice, who he certainly has a crush on, but who just as obviously has a crush on [[TriangRelations Elijah]].

* AnAxeToGrind: [[TheBigGuy Elijah]] does this, with a smaller hatchet than the usual giant battle axe. It's unclear where, exactly, he gets the hatchet. It appears in his hand during the train fight with Isaac, meaning he may have pulled DeusAxMachina and realized it ''really'' works for him.

* HeroesPreferSwords: Isaac uses a cavalry saber along with other weapons, most of his TrueCompanions use guns or weapons gloves, and when they do have another WeaponOfChoice, it's not a sword. Even Caroline remarks that Isaac's history with being taught sword fighting is pretty heroic, especially as he flirts with NamedWeapons for some extra flair.

* SwordAndGun: Isaac does this a ''lot.'' He and Timothy both do this when they fight each other. Elijah does this, except with [[WeaponOfChoice a hatchet]] instead of the sword.

* NotSoDifferent: Isaac is terrified that he is still similar to Harrison, Timothy, or to the old Isaac. A less serious example is Solomon and Cassandra, who strangely [[OddFriendship get along]].

* ArtificalLimbs: Although none of the main cast have any, Matthew Leeland's entire business seems built on the numerous LifeOrLimb decisions made during the Civil War. He mentions basing his research on {{ArmCannon}}s, although he isn't building them himself.

* MagnificentBastard: Harrison.

* OfficerAndAGentleman: Isaac and Augustus Doyle. Caroline and Tabby both like Isaac for these qualities, although they both know about his less... gentlemanly past.

* RedHeadedHero: Isaac. Caroline's attraction to him qualifies him for HeroesWantRedheads too.

* TheDragon: Harrison, has Sawyer and his new attack dog as these, and he used to have Isaac.

* EvilCounterpart: Harrison to Harvey; his new "attack dog" to Isaac.

* TheMusketeer: Isaac and Harrison's new "attack dog" are both this.

* NotSoDifferent: Isaac is terrified that he is still similar to Harrison, or to the old Isaac. Also applies to him and the "attack dog." A less serious example is Solomon and Cassandra, who strangely [[OddFriendship get along]].

After the war, he is sent, [[OneRiotOneRanger usually alone]], to deal with problems through the South. Harrison's "attack dog" is this as well, based on what he does to the militia's camp.

Happens again in the first engagement with Harrison, [[spoiler: when Isaac and the militia try to stop him from burning down a town]].
* BattleCouple: Isaac and Caroline have proven that they're this, though never officially, since they're JustFriends. [[spoiler: After his [[ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies it's not you, it's my job]] moment, it's unclear if they will continue to be this anyway, or if they'll be back to just friends when she arrives to fight Harrison.]]

* DarkAndTroubledPast: Isaac, Solomon, Caroline and Dai all qualify. Cassandra arguably fits as well, [[spoiler:between her encounters with Spencer and what Isaac did to her brother and town.]] Altogether they have strong vibes of DysfunctionJunction or BreakfastClub, although the group dynamic tends more towards TrueCompanions.

* TheDragon: Elijah appears to be Spencer's, [[spoiler:briefly, but is actually working for the Pinkertons.]] Harrison has Sawyer and his new attack dog, and used to have Isaac.

* EveryoneCanSeeIt: Isaac and Caroline's relationship for several chapters. Even ''they'' both know it, but it seems as though neither of them [[CannotSpitItOut can spit it out]]. [[spoiler:That is, until Chapter 37]].

[[spoiler:Spencer's worst legacy may be the economic damage done to the South, but his crowning moment of awful is when he [[BreakThemByTalking breaks Isaac by talking]] about how the slave trade never ended.]] [[spoiler:Even Cassandra, who redeems herself (despite her family's status as former slaveholders), only does so ''after'' she's nearly been sold into slavery herself.]]

* SouthernGentleman: Several. Isaac, Captain Doyle and Verne are the most prominent.

* TallDarkAndHandsome: Solomon and Jose are both notably this, Isaac is the [[RedIsHeroic ginger version]].

* SelfMadeMan: Harvey and Jasper. Caroline's father (or perhaps Grandfather) would be this as well, and Caroline seems to be earning the title for herself. Solomon is on his way to this [[spoiler: especially since he's been appointed Sheriff.]]

* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Caroline, but also Tabby. Both like Isaac for his OfficerAndAGentleman qualities, although they both know about his less... gentlemanly past.

* SouthernGentleman: Several. Isaac and Verne are the most prominent.

* StillWearingTheOldColors: Isaac kept his uniform from the war and Elijah likely did too. Both have been in and out of official service, though don't seem to have been wearing the uniform on duty, qualifying them for this.
* StrangerInAFamiliarLand: Isaac when he returns to Boston. Fear of being this [[spoiler: Cassie from returning to Georgia.]]
* SwordAndGun: Isaac does this a ''lot.'' He borders on TheMusketeer and his weapons choices make sense in light of his cavalry history as well as the time period. But most of the time he plays this trope straight. Elijah does this, except with [[WeaponOfChoice a hatchet]] instead of the sword. Seeing as how he's ''supposed'' to be a copy of Isaac, it seems safe to bet that Harrison's new "attack dog" will do this as well.

* WarIsHell: All of the veterans (and there are many) seem to agree on this. Even Harvey, the most eager to get back into a fight with Steven Harrison, feels this way. Supported by text:
