*** The council of five mutually antagonistic warlords, including one amazingly competent ChessMaster with a great readiness to sacrifice the lives of his followers, is rather reminiscent of ''Literature/{{Shogun}}''.
''Literature/{{Shogun}}'' and especially the sequel Gai-Jin.
*** Both novels describe a stale and isolationist oriental / Auriental society under threat from small but immensely powerful barbarian hordes. In Gai-Jin, that role is played by the British and partially the French, with their dreaded navies.
*** One of the gross atrocities the British and French perpetrated was the capturing, looting and torching of the Chinese imperial palace. Vincent appears to agree to this modus operandi.
*** The shishi, the rebels in Gai-Jin, make use of the beautifully concise slogan / rallying cry "sonno-joi", which translates as "Revere the Emperor, expel the barbarians". The rebels in Interesting Times still use rather more verbose slogans.
*** In Gai-Jin, the main political player is the refined but ruthless Lord Yoshi. As guardian of the underage Shogun and member of the council of the five most powerful landholding nobles, he's the de facto grand vizier, although his council colleagues are more of a handful than those of Lord Hong.
*** The [=McSweeneys=] are probably a reference to the Struans in Gai-Jin and other books in the series being about a powerful family with a Scottish name (because they're Scottish).Scottish). The Struans, as the most powerful emporium in Asia lay claim to the title "Noble House". In Gai-Jin, though, they have not made it into the council of five as yet.
*** Also, in Asia such a trade emporium is known as a "Hong". (No, in Hong Kong the "Hong" means "fragrant", as was to be expected).
*** Both Lotus Blossom and Sumomo are very young female members of a rebel cadre, are exceptional martial artists, and have radical political ideas concerning self-government that stun the rest of the cadre. And Rincewind.
*** Sumomo's master and father figure is the heroic and cunning rebel leader Katsumata. There couldn't be a sharper contrast with Lotus Blossom's father [[spoiler:Twoflower]], who is also venerated as "the master" as the author of the revolutionary treatise.
*** Katsumata dies a coward's death at Lord Yoshi's feet, whereas [[spoiler:Twoflower heroically challenges Lord Hong and wins]].

The ''{{Literature/Discworld}}'' narration notes that Amazonian women who live in the jungle should look considerably grimier and sweatier.
-->Three figures stepped into his line of vision. They were obviously female. They were abundantly female. They were not wearing a great deal of clothing and seemed to be altogether too fresh-from-the-haidressers for people who have just been paddling a large war canoe, but this is often the case with beautiful Amazonian warriors.

* HaplesslyHiding: the book sees an old barbarian hero looking to retire on one last grand adventure. Cohen the Barbarian decides to conquer the Discworld Expy of China. Having consolidated the Agatean Empire's throne-room on the death of the elderly and senile previous Emperor, Cohen looks around him and sees the room is amply stocked with very large vases which could easily accomodate a man. Being GenreSavvy, he walks up to one and starts talking, apropos of nothing, of all the things that could happen to a man hiding in such a vase, like for instance several gallons of boiling water. After hearing somebody throwing up inside the vase in sheer fear, Cohen grins, his point having been made, and asks the spy in the next vase if he's got everything he needs, is he okay for a notebook and a pencil sharpener, for instance?
