* ISeeDeadPeople: Marcus' power, one which requires him to be careful to avoid being haunted.

* BewareTheMindReader: Subverted. While the telepathic Immortals are not evil, they are very nosy and non-telepaths have to seriously give thought to information being casually picked from their brains. Seth explains that the younger telepaths aren't malicious, they just forget that brains aren't open books, theirs for the perusing. It's particularly bad when asleep because the younger telepaths lack the control to curtail their ability and will often find themselves in the dreams (or nightmares) of others, which can be very revealing and/or embarrassing for both parties.

* TheChainsOfCommanding: When Zach takes over for Seth as the Emergency Contact for the Immortal Guardians to give Seth a break, he realizes just how extremely hard Seth works to keep everyone safe. Eventually the work is split up amongst Seth, Zach, Jared, David, and Aidan, and they're still super busy, making it all the more amazing that Seth shoulder the load all by himself for thousands of years.

* ShapeshiftingExcludesClothes: When Nick tries to sneak by Kayla in cat form, this becomes a problem when he passes out and shifts back to his naked human form. The best Kayla can do is give him a towel, as she has no idea where he left his clothes.

* Psychometry: Imhotep has the ability to walk through a space and mentally visualize what has happened there. It makes him useful for crime scene reconstruction and tracking.

* TeleportationVisualizationClause: The younger Immortals can only teleport to places they're familiar with. This is sometimes combatted by using satellite aerial imaging to get them as close as possible, but is sometimes a problem, such as when they're having trouble contacting Roland but can't teleport directly to him because they don't know where he lives.

* WelcomeToTheMasquerade: Each book has a least one character who has to be introduced to the world of Immortal Guardians and vampires and explained how the virus works, what the Immortal Guardians do, what the difference between Immortals, Gifted Ones, and vampires is, and how they protect humans from knowing any of this.

* StrongFamilyResemblance: It is noted early in the series that most [[Gifted Ones have black hair and dark brown eyes]] and many of the [[Immortal Guardians look similar enough to be mistaken for each other.]] Later in the series it is revealed that [[spoiler: all Gifted Ones are very distantly related by way of being Seth's descendants. This is why he is so protective of them.]]

* DyingRace: The Lasarans were infected by [[SyntheticPlage a virus]] that left all of the women infertile. Children are now very rare on their planet. Immortals are unable to reproduce as the same virus destroys their sperm as soon as it leaves the host body and it is unknown how the virus would affect a baby in utero or once born (with the anti-aging aspect being a great concern). Once it is discovered that Lasarans and gifted ones can successfully sire healthy children, their combined DNA negating the negative effects of the virus in each species, the two groups immediately make moves to set up potential matches they may be able to have children.

''Immortal Guardians'' is a series of ParanormalRomance novels by Dianne Duvall. It features a wide array of characters, including vampires (humans infected with a "symbiotic virus" that enhances speed and strength, but eventually drives them to a homicidal rage), ''gifted ones'' (beings who look like normal humans but have "advanced DNA" that grants them special abilities), and Immortal Guardians (''gifted ones'' who have been hit with the same virus that turns humans into vampires--they get the speed and strength without the insanity). And humans, naturally. The series also features a smattering of sci-fi and a heavy dose of action, with battles between vampires and immortals, and a surprisingly well-rounded cast of characters.

As of May 2014, the series has three novels released (''Darkness Dawns, Night Reigns'', ''Phantom Shadows'', and ''Darkness Rises''), a novella (''In Still Darkness'', included in a collection called ''Predatory'') and a fifth novel called ''Night Unbound'' due on September 2nd.

They can recover from many injuries, but anything too severe will cause the virus to consume their whole body in an attempt to repair the damage. Also, the virus slowly drives them insane. The Immortals have divergent DNA which makes them immune to the virus' negative effects save for photosensitivity. Scientists are working on a cure, but have not found one yet.

* ActuallyNotAVampire: The Immortal Guardians. Richart is mistaken for one when he teleports to his girlfriend's home sporting fangs, and Krysta is unaware of the difference between vampires and immortals when she first encounters Etienne.
* AlienAutopsy: Done while [[spoiler: Ami]] was still alive and fully conscious. Don't worry, though, her BizarreAlienBiology allows her to heal completely.

* AuthorAppeal: It's clear that Dianne Duvall thinks more people should eat organic foods. Also, she probably lives in North Carolina.
* BadassDriver: Ami; almost all of the immortals.
* BandOfBrothers: The immortals see themselves as a family, even though only Richart, Lisette, and Etienne were related before they were transformed. Their extended family includes their human allies as well.
* BerserkButton: Do ''not'' threaten Ami in front of Seth. Or allow her to come to any harm.

* SlidingScaleOfVampireFriendliness: The immortals are all on the "friendly" side (with Bastien and Roland closest to being hostile) and vampires all end up on the evil side eventually. Even the ones who start out normal will have bouts of uncontrollable violence, which they regret afterwards. Of course, ''some'' vampires start out as sadistic humans and only get worse.
