* TheUnfavorite: Louise, at several points Mark appears to have her parent's clear preference. When she won an academic award, her mother refused to put it up because Mark had nothing similar and would feel bad. She got a scholarship to a good school, Mark was paid a full ride by their parents. In their adult lives, Mark had clear and continuous financial and emotional support for his slacker / failure lifestyle. After their parents passed away [[spoiler:he got 100% of the inheritance, minus the creepy puppets, which went to Louise.]]
** Tragically, this applies to Louise from Mark's point of view. From Mark's POV, Louise [[spoiler:hated their mother, belittled all her art and efforts, was immensely bossy, and the nail on the coffin is she got off without any punishment after almost murdering him when they were children, and their parents constantly lied to and gaslighted him by saying it never happened. Louise has also "abandoned" their parents by leaving for college 1 year early and living as far as possible from their parents without leaving the country.]] The fact that their family constantly hid the truth and never talked about issues tragically drove them apart, and almost killed them.

* UnPerson: Freddy, Nancy's brother and Louise and Mark's late uncle, died when he was five from stepping on a nail and getting lockjaw. The even was so traumatic that their grandmother destroyed all pictures of him, clothes, and toys, and even forbade anyone from speaking of him while she was alive. It's bad enough the family has to correct themselves on the fact that Nancy was not an only child.
