* AlternateCalendar: Hive England generally uses day numbers instead of month and day. The calendar is based around the four annual festivals of New Year, Carnival, Valentine, and Halloween, with months consisting of about one-third of the time between two festivals, and weeks consisting of about one-quarter of a month. If Carnival is moved due to a delay in Lottery, then Valentine moves to the halfway point between Carnival and Halloween, and the months and weeks affected are adjusted appropriately. Hive Genex still uses the older calendar.

Added DiffLines:

* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Keith managed to sabotage his own plans in two different ways with one action ([[spoiler:sending Franklin to the Blue Zone park to cause Buzz distress]]) in ''Adversary'':
** [[spoiler: When Amber scanned Franklin, it gave her experience with minds under heavy medication to remove violent tendencies, which she recognized when scanning Koloman. This gave Lucas the clue he needed to work out Prospero's identity, preventing him from calling the strike that would have destroyed Amber's unit.]]
** [[spoiler: Joint Hive Treaty Enforcement was able to match the routing used on the message changing Franklin's instructions to the message used to sabotage the Northern Americas Group negotiations, confirming that Keith had performed a treasonous act and letting JHTE remove his right to transfer to another Hive.]]

Added DiffLines:

* DarwinistDesire: Deconstructed at a societal level by Hive Genex. Citizens have a marker implanted in their cheek at birth that will indicate suitable genetic matches for them, in an attempt to optimize their bloodlines. This has left them without telepathic genes, for whatever reason, and their bloodlines appear to be tight enough that members can appear to be twins. It seems highly likely that they are skirting the edge of inbreeding issues, and Elliott mentions that their overcommitment to bloodlines "must eventually end in disaster".

Added DiffLines:

* LoopholeAbuse:
** Hive England is required to inform all citizens about other Hives and that they are allowed one free transfer to another Hive; however, they do everything they can to conceal information about those other Hives and make transferring Hives look as utterly unappealing as possible.
** Hive Genex is required by treaty to allow all citizens to have two children with any consenting partner of their choice. While this is allowed, choosing to have children with a partner deemed acceptable is rewarded with better housing and living conditions, making a failure to do so a de facto punishment.

Added DiffLines:

* HolyBurnsEvil: The Hunter of Souls and his creatures of darkness are believed to be unable to sing the Hive Duty Songs, and people singing them are able to drive the Hunter of Souls away.

Added DiffLines:

* NurseryRhyme: The Hive Duty Songs seem to be about halfway between a nursery rhyme and a Hiveist hymn. We see bits of Hive Duty Song Ten, "The Hive is Our World", and there are mentions of others, such as Hive Duty Song Six, about how the nosies keep people safe. The Hunter of Souls and his creatures of darkness are believed to be unable to sing the Duty Songs.
