* SchrödingersCanon: Subverted, while the author did communicate with the directors for Frozen 2's plot line to add foreshadowing, it is still the authors own work and isnt referenced in the sequel. Many fans also point out a few discrepancies.
** Elsa's attitude doesnt reflect her change at the end of Frozen 1, the shorts and other extended media. She is more aloof and cold and doesnt communicate well it Anna.
** Anna is more insecure than she usually is.
** Elsa has left Anna in charge of Arendelle while she's been away before (Anna takes Charge) but here Anna acts as if its new and that Elsa doesnt trust her.
** Elsa had anxiety dreams in a comic short. Here she says she doesnt have them due to a trick her father taught her.

* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Anna thinks that she accidentally unleashed the Nattmara after reading a spell from a book designed to "Make Dreams Come True" as she had been having nightnmares about being chased and devoured by a wolf for quite some time. [[spoiler: however, it turns out that the "spell" was just a poem without any actual power. The Nattmara actually manifested from Elsa suppressing her fears of not being a good enough queen by imagining that she is "feeding" them to a wolf constellation named Url.]]

* EldritchAbomination: A Nattmara is the result of a person burying their fears until it overflows and allows it to take form, in this case a giant wolf. When the Nattmara first begins to manifest in Arendelle its a blight that causes crops to die and animals to fall into an endless sleep. When it takes physical form it causes those who fall asleep to remain asleep experiencing nightmares to feed it, and they go into a frenzy when they wake up.
* FakeUltimateHero: Aren is the legendary founder of Arendelle who was said to wield a magic sword that carved the fjord and went on many adventures with mermaids and dragons. While its ambiguous that he was even a real person he certainly wasnt as magical as the stories tell.

The ways the sisters react to Olaf saying one sister was born with power and one was not doesn't seem connected to whether or not Elsa told Anna of the accident.

* CanonDiscontinuity: Also in the sequel Anna looks confused when Olaf says that "one sister was born with magical powers the other was ordinary" with a guilty look on Elsa's face. This would imply that Elsa never told Anna about the accident but in FOA Anna references it hinting that she found out. However the same can be said for all extended media books: Frozen Heart, Memory Magic, True Treasure, etc.

None of these books and comics were canon to begin with. If Forest of Shadows was confirmed as canon itself, then it would have the power to confirm them noncanon, but while the author consulting with the original writers means that it's less questionable than the other ones, it still falls into Schrodingers Canon like they do.

** Elsa also says she doesnt get nightmares due to a trick her father taught her, but one short comic in Frozen Adventures has her suffering anxiety dreams. Also different from this book, when Elsa realizes this she decides to ask for help.
** Elsa managing being a good queen and a good sister was the subject of "All Hail The Queen", but FOA acts as if it never happened.
** In another book called "Anna Takes Charge" Elsa leaves Arendelle for a day and leaves Anna to look after Arendelle in her place. Here, Elsa TELLS Anna why and gives her praise for how she ran things when she was away. Here Anna has no idea that her sister trusts her as a companion let alone looking after Arendelle.

** Anna is also far more insecure and temperamental than she is in other written literature.

Most books and comics are Schrodingers Canon. The end of the first Frozen only lets us see a glimpse of the relationship between the sisters after their reconciliation - enough to show us that they now play together again, but not necessarily to a greater degree than what we see in Forest of Shadows.

** Elsa is still very cold and closed off to Anna even though the end of Frozen 1 and all other following books and comics have her being more open.

** After receiving this boost Anna goes to save her sister from the Nattmara. After realizing that the Nattmara is a manifestation of Elsa's fear she gives her sister an emotional boost saying she's the person she looks up too and a great queen. Which defeats the Nattmara.

----
!!This book provides examples of:

* AMinorKidroduction: The book's opening scene takes place when Anna is five years old and is waking up from a nightmare she has the night Elsa accidentally strikes her head.
* AndIMustScream: The novel takes place after the original movie, in which Anna slowly freezes to death from the inside out, the process completing at the climax, after Anna sacrifices her chance to get a cure as well as find the love she's craved for years in order to save her sister Elsa's life. Here, Anna still has nightmares about it: turns out she didn't die, but was fully conscious as a statue of ice, unable to move, speak or breathe, and wanting to comfort the distraught Elsa, but trapped in her own hard, cold body.
* AnxietyDreams: Anna has dreams dealing with her abandonment and self-esteem issues. Her dreams include one about being replaced by another version of her with white hair whom her family prefers, and one about her former fiance, who tried to murder her and her family, trying again to marry her again for her title and telling her that her sister doesn't want her because she's not useful. These dreams also include reliving [[AndIMustScream the time she spent frozen as a statue of ice, physically frozen in both senses of the term and how helpless she felt while unable to comfort her sister]].
* ChekhovsGun: [[spolier: Subverted with the Revolute Blade. Anna and Elsa are lead to believe that it's the only thing that can defeat the Nattmara. When Elsa faces the Nattmara, however, the blade shatters.]]

* {{Interquel}}: Takes place during the three-year timeskip between the first and second film. The epilogue takes place during the sequel's "Into the Unknown" sequence, serving as a brief novelization of Anna's thoughts during that scene.
* NightmareSequence:
** The book opens up with Anna having one in which she encounters a gigantic wolf. Seeing blood on its paws, she's terrified it's gotten Elsa.
** One scene also involves her having nightmares about Earth Giants destroying the village; a shipwreck in a storm[[note]]her parents were lost in one[[/note]]; being replaced by another version of her with white hair whom her family prefers; and her former fiance, who tried to murder her and her family, trying again to marry her again for her title and telling her that her sister "has no use" for her; and [[AndIMustScream the time she spent frozen as a statue of ice, physically frozen in both senses of the term and unable to comfort her sister]].
* RealityEnsues: The isolated upbringing and other traumas of Elsa and Anna have left them socially stunted and socially anxious.
** After spending so much time worrying about making one wrong move that would expose her powers, Elsa's quietness during meetings is due to fear, not stoicism. [[BrokenAce She also feels trapped by the pressure of living up to everyone's admiration and expectations of her.]]
** After being suddenly cut off from her sister and spending so much time facing constant apparent rejection, as well as [[IWasOnlyPretendingToLikeYou her fiance revealing he was faking his feelings and implying that no one loved her]], Anna herself is constantly afraid that her loved ones, especially Elsa, secretly don't want her around. She also worries about whether she's valuable enough and is hurt by the knowledge that her family often keeps big secrets from her.
* ShoutOut: The book mentions Corona, the kingdom from ''Disney/{{Tangled}}''.
* SignificantAnagram: "REVOLUTE" is an anagram of [[spoiler: "TRUE LOVE"]].
