These first few stories establish the internal and external conflicts of Terminus tend to occur at the simultaneously. * RaygunGothic: Starting with "Literature/TheEncyclopedists", characters have a variety of new devices that are essentially older technology with a smaller energy source, called 'atomics'. As the decades pass, they continue nuclear miniaturization, and in "Literature/TheTraders" and "Literature/TheMerchantPrinces", start calling such devices 'nucleics’. The (collapsing) Empire uses generators the size of large buildings, while the Foundation creates generators the size of a pocketwatch.

!!Foundation provides examples of:
* AdvertisingByAssociation: The 1960 Creator/Panther edition points out that Dr Asimov also wrote Literature/TheNakedSun.
* BilledAboveTheTitle:
** The French translation, published by Creator/Gallimard in 1957, includes Dr Asimov's name above the title in much smaller font.
** The Creator/AceBooks 1962 edition of The 1,000 Year Plan (red cover) places Dr Asimov's name above the title, in slightly smaller font. The older blue covers included his name at the bottom left of the cover instead.
** The Creator/Panther editions consistently published Dr Asimov's name above the title, ranging from "same size" to "three times the size".
** The Creator/DelRey cover from 1983 makes "Isaac" three times as large as the title, and "Asimov" twice as large again.
** The Creator/BantamSpectra cover from 1991 only uses "ASIMOV", but makes it twice as large as the title and Tagline combined.
** The Creator/HarperCollins (UK) cover from 1994 published Dr Asimov's name large enough to take up the top third, even larger than the focal point of the cover.
** The Creator/HarperVoyager (UK) cover from 2016 published Dr Asimov's name at the top, somewhat larger than the title, but smaller than the sun and spaceship on the cover.
* BlindIdiotTranslation: One translation of the English Foundation to Russian translates the words "Logarithmic slide rule" as "Pravilo logariphmicheskogo skol'zheniya". Literally "The law of logarithmic sliding".
* CompressedAdaptation: The Creator/AceBooks publications of the first Foundation'’ novel are called Literature/The1000YearPlan. This title reflects an abridged version of the original, with "Literature/TheMerchantPrinces" being cut.
* CoverDrop:

* Dedication: This book is dedicated to Dr Asimov's mother.
--> To My Mother\\
Of Whose Authentic Gray Hairs\\
Not a Few Were Caused by Myself
* DoubleBook: Creator/AceBooks double novel series has D-110; Literature/NoWorldOfTheirOwn by Creator/PoulAnderson on the front and Literature/TheThousandYearPlan'’ by Creator/IsaacAsimov (the first novel of Literature/TheFoundationTrilogy) on the back.
* MarketBasedTitle: The 1959 German translation (by Creator/Moewig) for Foundation is Terminus, der letzte Planet, in English, this is equivalent to Terminus, the last Planet.
* TheNamesake:
** The title, reused from the first story, refers to the (first) Foundation, which Hari Seldon arranged to have colonized the distant planet Terminus.
** The alternative title, The 1,000 Year Plan, refers to Hari Seldon's Plan for a mere thousand years between the collapse of the Galactic Empire and the rise of the next Galactic Empire.
* Omnibus: Literature/Foundation1951 and Literature/IRobot were published as a single volume by Creator/OctopusBooks in 1984.
* OneSteveLimit:
** A subtle aversion occurs because "Literature/TheEncyclopedists" has a character named Jord Fara, while "Literature/TheMerchantPrinces" has a priest named Jord Parma. Fortunately, both are minor and appear in two different stories, set roughly a century apart, which minimizes the confusion.
** TheProtagonist of "Literature/TheTraders" is Lanthan Devers when originally published, but also one of the minor characters in "Literature/TheGeneralFoundation" was given the name Lanthan Devers, so when Dr Asimov edited "The Traders" for publication in Literature/Foundation1951, he changed the name to Limmar Ponyets, to clarify that these weren't the same characters.
* OneWordTitle: The name of the first book in Literature/TheFoundationTrilogy is titled simply Foundation, taking it from the original name for "Literature/TheEncyclopedists".
* PreviouslyOn: Editions since the early eighties have included "The Story Behind the Foundation". It is a meta-example because it explains why Literature/TheFoundationTrilogy has had so many different editions in the forty years since he sold "Literature/Foundation1941". It also tells the reader another book in the series is coming; Literature/FoundationsEdge.
* Tagline:
** "An Interplanetary Novel by Creator/IsaacAsimov" -- Creator/GnomePress cover from 1951
** "A million worlds made up their society-- now the threat of thirty thousand years of anarchy loomed large" -- Creator/Panther edition from 1960
** "The Galaxy was crumbling into thirty thousand years of anarchy" -- Creator/Panther edition from 1964 & from 1965
** "In a future century the Galactic Empire dies and one man creates a new force for civilized life" -- Creator/Avon's cover from 1966
** "Book One of the Foundation Trilogy, awarded the Hugo as Best Series Ever!" -- Creator/DelRey's cover from 1983
** "The first book in the epic saga" -- Creator/Panther edition from 1984.
** "The Foundation Novels" -- Creator/BantamSpectra cover from 1991
* TitleDropChapter: The first Novella was initially published as "Foundation". When publishing this Novel, Dr Asimov renamed the chapter to "Literature/TheEncyclopedists" and deliberately avoided sharing a chapter title with the book's title.
